Rap artists covering rock songs don't necessarily happen quite as easily.
Look at the current Rock songs chart there is a cover song charting this week in fact - which has no chance of charting on the Hot 100

Rap artists covering rock songs don't necessarily happen quite as easily. Look at the current Rock songs chart there is a cover song charting this week in fact - which has no chance of charting on the Hot 100 When Pop was dominating in 2008-2013, there was almost zero Pop artists who were releasing cover hits. When Rock was still dominative in the late 2000s, there was almost zero Rock artists releasing cover hits. Cover music being hits has been done with for awhile now, and it has nothing to do with Rap becoming dominant on Hot 100 barely 3 years ago. As said, majority covers that charted really have only charted for 1 (maybe 2) weeks with one-off TV show performances on Idol/Voice/Glee the past 15 years. "Put Your Records On" gaining momentum outside a talent-show performance and actually having momentum for various weeks is relatively rare, and has been since well before Rap dominated Hot 100.

Let's just say I disagree and we will leave it at that. There is a charting cover song in Rock this week. So cover songs are not dead, they just come in genres that are not dominant on this chart. Country artists have also been known to do a cover song or two from time to time. If Rock was dominant rather than rap you would see cover songs trickle in where now you see zero. Of the current top 40 just about half are rap/hip-hop. Imagine if hip hop were less dominant, then more songs of other genres would be free to hit the Hot 100 Not gonna happen though in the current environment.

There's also JubΓ«l's cover of "Dancing in the Moonlight" charting in the UK right now. Peaked at #11

Didn't realize "Put Your Records On" was a cover of the 2000s hit. Such a classic. When was the last time a new cover actually gained enough traction and charted multiple weeks on Hot 100? I'm sure the Glee Cast last did it around their 2011/2010 peak, but drawing blank at what would have possibly done so since. Seems like this song is on its way to having a chart run, whether it'll be a big one, who knows yet. off the top of my head I think the last one was Zombie by Bad Wolves in 2018? I may be forgetting something but that one stuck around for a couple months What about the Wheezer Africa cover?

Whether or not we think direct note for note covers are dead
Song samples are alive and well and seem to chart better
ILY (#37 this week) for example samples Frankie Valli

I can think of Africa and Sounds of Silence being βrecentβ covers - neither quite hit the top 40 but were high profile.
I think covers went out of style when the internet made any older song instantly available and the concept was cheapened by regular usage in things like American Idol, The Voice or Glee.

Oddly, this week on the Mainstream Rock chart (which is of course now a niche chart), there are three separate covers in the Top 20. In addition to Chris Cornell's cover of Guns'n Roses' "Patience" at number one, Three Days Grace has a cover of "Somebody That I Used To Know" at 16, and at 18 is Sevendust's cover of a song that, coincidentally, Chris Cornell wrote and Soundgarden recorded, "The Day I Tried to Live."

Also, let's not forget "Doin' Time" by Lana Del Rey, which last year hit number one on Rock Airplay and number 59 on the Hot 100.

This whole rock and covers discussion came at the perfect time
Miley Cyrus recently covered Blondie's Heart of Glass, and it is going viral on TikTok.

Early Early Projections, 'cause I'm bored. {Spoiler}WAP: Digital sales - 7,000 Paid streams - 20 million Free streams - 11 million Programmed streams - 2.5 million Airplay - 35 million = 301 points
Franchise: Digital sales - 10,000 Physical sales - 20,000~ (wild guess) Paid streams - 16 million Free streams - 7 million Programmed streams - 0.5 million Airplay - 12 million = 287 points
Laugh Now Cry Later: Sales - 3,000 Paid streams - 16 million Free streams - 5.5 million Programmed streams - 2.5 million Airplay - 54 million = 263 points
Mood: Sales - 8,000 Paid streams - 17 million Free streams - 6 million Programmed streams - 1.5 million Airplay - 43 million = 262 points
I have no clue about Dynamite's sales, but they'd need near 6 figures to retain #1 so honestly, next week could be a tossup....
Franchise's chance at #1/top 3/top 5 depends on the physical sales. If he only had 10,000 instead of 20,000 then that makes a huge difference of 247 points instead of 287 points. Whereas on the opposite end, if he had 30,000 physical sales, he'd have around 327 points projected.
Physical sales seem quite a bit heavily weighted at the moment huh? Considering how niche and small of a market they are in the year 2020. My updated projection. 1 +1 WAP 30,100 2 -2 Dynamite 28,933 3 NE Franchise 27,933 4 = Laugh Now Cry Later 26,333 5 = Mood 25,767 6 = Rockstar 24,320 7 = Blinding Lights 23,300 8 +1 Savage Love 20,387 9 -1 Watermelon Sugar 20,267 10 = I Hope 19,767 I think the announcement of BTS upcoming studio album may have made more fans focus on pre-ordering for it this week.

Covers are much much less common than they used to be, even on charts where covers are more likely to appear (rock) but sure, letβs argue against it to avoid having to actually admit we might be wrong about something. βAgree to disagreeβ is what we use, is it?
