That's not Ariana'a best song. It doesn't matter that it's not her best song. It matters how much cultural relevance it has.

It doesn't matter that it's not her best song. It matters how much cultural relevance it has. What is your meaning of cultural relevance? Please tell me you're not serious. Thank u next is a phenomenon that really only comes once a year, maybe even once every two years. Literally everybody at school would say "thank u" "next". This song was quoted every day. The music video broke records and is remembered as one of the most iconic music videos of the 2010s. In short, classic does not equal best. It doesn't matter what you think is her best song. It matters which songs of hers are going to be remembered in 10-30 years.

"Smooth", "...Baby One More Time", "Wannabe", "Always Be My Baby" and "No Scrubs" already come to mind as modern classics of the late 90s. A bit of a hot take here, but I think Smash Mouth's "All Star" also qualifies as a modern classic to some extent. When people born way after the song's commercial peak still cherish and quote the song so regularly, that goes beyond meme status (it helps the song was immortalized by featuring on a movie as beloved and timeless as Shrek, not to mention the song itself being pretty great).
For the 2000s, I'd say "Yeah!", "Lose Yourself", "I Gotta Feeling", "Mr. Brightside", "Hey Ya!", "Crazy In Love" "Umbrella", and "Toxic" are strong contenders.
As for the 2010s, while it's a bit too early to tell for the latter half of the decade, I think most people here have given some excellent choices. I'm surprised nobody pointed out to "The Hills" and "Closer", though.
As for future classics of the 2020s (or 2020, at least), I'm currently betting on "Circles", "Blinding Lights", and "WAP". We'll see how it goes 😉

I think 2 years is the minimum bar here and considering what 2018 (and older) songs are still in Spotify top 100 weekly chart globally: Believer by Imagine Dragons Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Lovely by Billie Eilish and Khalid Sicko Mode and Goosebumps by Travis Scott Lucid Dreams by Juice WRLD Electric Love by BØRNS Sunflower by Post Malone

What is the actual definition of a classic? Because I thought it’s supposed to be a song that everyone knows and that the GP continues to listen to for years to come. And I don’t even know a good number of these songs that people are listing...
