I like Tik Tok for bringing diversity and new songs and artist to the board however the cultural aspect of it is what bothers me, it shows people being fake perfect and "ideal" which is the wrong attitude especially for children
Also imagining how many 11-13 year olds participated in the WAP challange sends shivers down my spine

As someone who's doing a paper on gender and sex in music and another paper on media's portrayal of a perfect image, I understand there's a real, justifiable concern that music can have an impact on the way youth views sex and your body image.

But I have to ask: should we blame Cardi and Megan for making art or should we blame the society that made them popular in the first place? Like obviously seeing children dance or sing WAP is weird and you an argue gross, but our culture and society also plays a part in making these mediums popular and ubiquitous. The idea of big butts and big chests being the most desirable dates back decades, beauty and swimsuit contests are still extremely popular.

It's a hard question to answer, and I think there are credible arguments for both sides: that Cardi and Megan should be allowed to make raunchy art, regardless if it sends a false impression of women, but also that we as a society should be teaching kids that these media images of body perfection do not reflect reality and that they should not be hooked up on it.

Couldn't agree more with what you said! While Tik Tok has had a great positive impact on the musical landscape, its influences on society overall haven't been that positive.

There isn't much we can do besides encouraging parents to educate their children on what they see, and indeed, watch out for any exposure that might be flat-out inappropriate for them.
