A lot of these songs and their streaming #'s depends greatly on play listing as well. True to an extent yeah, although some would definitely be big no matter what, like Linkin Park's album track streams (ie no playlisting) for Meteora and Hybrid Theory are amazing for early 00s albums so I'm sure their singles would do great regardless of playlisting. Halo definitely has pretty great playlisting, but I'm sure it would still do quite well without that.

'Intro' seems to be by far the most streamed instrumental on Spotify. Then the "Amélie" track. And after that the only 100m+ tracks I found during a (short) search where Hans Zimmer's 'Time', 'Green Onions', and 'The Great Gig in the Sky' (which I consider to be an instrumental). And for a more on-topic comment: During my search I stumbled upon 'Now We Are Free' by Hans Zimmer et al. from the 'Gladiator' soundtrack, which was released in 2000. It currently has 117m plays, just enough to edge out mr. Williams for the year 2000 no. 50 spot it seems. I would be surprised if it was a 1999 radio single. And lastly, 'Dragostea Din Tei' (and maybe other songs ry4n suggested?) does not seem to have been added. I added Dragostea Din Tei when ry4n brought it up. And now I've added Now We Are Free too.

Does the 2009 list include songs that were released in 2009 but released as a single in 2010?
Also that top 50 list is missing Umbrella, it has over 500M.
Love this thread though, amazing work. Can we try and update it maybe monthly?

Can we try and update it maybe monthly? I'm not going to update it monthly, probably just annually (if I have time for even that...). If someone else wants to update it more often I can send them my spreadsheet that has all the songs I can find that are nearing 100m and/or the yearly top 50. And no, I'm not including songs that were released in 2009 but were released as singles in 2010. Hence no Telephone, Alejandro, etc.

I'm not complaining that The xx is relatively successful they deserve it. I just think it's so bizarre their most streamed song is literally just the intro to one of their debut. Like most intros if they aren't full songs, are not the most streamed but for some reason their most popular track is an instrumental.

This is my attempt at listing the most-streamed songs on Spotify released before 2010 - essentially, songs that were already considered catalog hits when Spotify became popular. Please let me know about typos or, more importantly, songs I’m missing! Typos: ... Missing: ... Honorable mentions: ... Thank you so much! I’ve added all of these to my own list and corrected the post above! I’m most surprised to have missed “Take On Me;” I have a vivid memory of typing “A-ha” in my notes but I guess that never actually happened haha

Ohhh I see what happened.. there were two chunks of 4 or 5 consecutive songs each that got lost somehow; most of the ones you and @bobpatience pointed out were in those sections.. haha idk why I’m so bad at this right now. Thank you!!

Thank you!! You have put Linger, not Zombie for the Cranberries track. And I just realized that Coldplay have a 500m+ track for each of their first seven (out of eight) studio albums. That seems like a record. The closest I can find is Eminem with 5/10 with another 3 albums being very close, and 2 being quite far off. Fun fact: both acts have 1 song over 1 billion plays, but neither song is on a studio album ('Lose Yourself' from the "8 Mile" Soundtrack and 'Something Just Like This' with the Chainsmokers). Sheeran has 500m+ on all his albums, but of course he only has 4 of those (though 3 with 1b+). drake has 6 out of his 10 albums/mixtapes (dark lane demo tapes, scorpion, more life, views, what a time to be alive & nothing was the same) of his other 4 projects - energy has 334m, marvins room has 340m, best i ever had has 272m (and is on both of his first 2 projects) his album coming in january should get him to 7/11, laugh now cry later has 249m currently

It seems like the acts that are most represented on the list are all in a sweet spot as far as the number of “classic” hits in their discography – enough to generate a critical mass of streams for an artist, but not so many those streams are spread too thin across their catalog. For example, only 1 Beatles song has reached this upper echelon but Creedence Clearwater Revival’s smaller batch of classics has risen to it (or near it) together.
Maybe that’s way off-base as a hypothesis; it’s just something that jumps out at me.

It‘s really a shame, as a fan it hurts to see these numbers. I‘m also shocked how low „Check On It“ is all streaming services, I always thought it carried a bigger legacy, it’s such a fun track.

This was great work nickd! Would be curious to see the earlier years of the 2010s too if you’ve been keeping track. (I know if we get too recent it’s just going to be too dynamic still to stay accurate for long).
