"pov" is familiar because it was the most popular album track. in fact, prior to becoming a single, it held the title for longest charting album cut by a female artist on the Hot 100. it was a TikTok trend and climbed into Top 40 on the Hot 100 because of that despite debuting lower during album release week. people know this song and several people on this board were even rooting for "34+35" to be scrapped and "pov" to be pushed as far back as in November. there's nothing fishy about the success of her first two singles, either. "positions" was her lead single, debuted with stellar callout scores, and did well on streaming. likewise for "34+35," which has good callout scores and received the remix treatment. it was also popular on TikTok and #1 on Spotify at the top of the year, even before the remix came out. I'm struggling to see how this is "inorganic." Ariana has been a radio darling since 2014. her time, much like most of her peers, might be up soon. let her round it up to a decade in the mainstream first. then you can rejoice pop radio drops her singles after they come near Top 15. Didn't this debut on callouts and then drop off the following week? How do you explain a song debuting with 90% familiarity suddenly vanishing the next week? I don't work for MediaBase so I can only speculate. Callout research uses random sampling as far as I know, and it is entirely possible, though unusual, that one week they had people who were familiar with the song and the next week they didn't. They might have excluded the song from research per human error. It is back on callouts now so that week's participant pool may have been an anomaly or the researchers could have messed up. What would your explanation be? I'm curious to hear. What do you mean? "pov" is already eligible for platinum in the US for streaming + sales consumption exceeding 1,000,000 units. Accumulated most of that sum prior to being sent to radio. Why would radio hesitate on playing a song that is already a hit? already at 193 million streams on Spotify too. Ariana is the main pop girl right now. A lot of her predecessors (from Mariah Carey to Taylor Swift) have had similar runs on radio, where (nearly) everything they touched performed well, especially if it was for their own albums. I don't understand what about her specifically is suspicious, other than you clearly not being a fan of her.

When was the last time a female artist at or near their peak had a later single rise this smoothly into the Top 10 with such poor reception on other metrics?
This is at the very bottom on every other metric but shows no sign of slowing. All of the other later singles from massive eras by female artists stalled in the teens.

I didn't say anywhere that I'm not a fan of hers... much like I also didn't say that radio shouldn't hesitate to play her initially. What I did say is that, at some point, one would think there would be a bit of hesitation in flying this up the chart when they see how poorly it is doing on all other metrics. It doesn't matter how well it performed in November or prior to it being announced as a single. It's performance should reflect how popular/well it's doing now.
If you don't think there's anything suspicious about every other female in the Top 10 dropping like rocks while two Ariana songs experience significantly smaller losses despite a third Ariana song coming in hot then... that is your choice. I'm inclined to believe that Scooter Braun just wants to add another chart achievement to her resume, but that's just me. I can't think of any other logical reason why radio wouldn't be dropping either of her other two songs now.

I don't understand what about her specifically is suspicious, other than you clearly not being a fan of her. I’ll just chime in for a second to say that for me, it’s an accumulation of increasingly concerning radio trends. Over the past few years, radio chart runs have appeared more and more inorganic. We have some songs peaking after nearly 30 weeks, some songs climbing way higher or faster than expected, some songs absolutely imploding in embarrassing fashion after they peak, and some songs lingering for simply obnoxious amounts of time before going recurrent. With Ariana, it’s clear that she’s the biggest artist right now in pop radio’s eye. And that’s completely fair. But many of those previously mentioned trends seem to be coming to a head with her chart runs this era. Positions and 34+35 are deserved #1s, but the way they’ve lingered in the Top 10 (alongside certain other big hits to be clear) suggests radio is too scared to play anything new. Meanwhile, the only new song barreling through is another Ariana Grande song that has yet to earn it. It’s not exactly performing well in any other metric, yet it’s stormed right through songs with great callouts and high Hot 100 placements. Not to mention it had slowed down to about a +1000 bullet before suddenly surging past the set of songs it was on pace with. Radio being interested is fine, but the way its played out just feels fake. Pop radio seems to be going the way of the country charts. Everything moves up slowly one by one before eventually peaking and collapsing. Sometimes an undeniable hit like Drivers License does it faster. And the only artists with undeniable good will seem to be Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber, conveniently the two golden treasures of Scooter Braun. It’s just making chart watching less exciting.

As a chart statistics fan, it's definitely had an interesting chart run tho.
2 weeks ago, it was in the top 20 on Billboard pop radio without being on the Hot 100 chart. The only other songs I could think of like that are Sarai - Ladies, DF Dub - Country Girl, Chumbawamba - Amnesia, MAX f/ Quinn XCII - Love Me Less, and Good Charlotte - Predictable.
Last week it was in the top 18 on Billboard pop radio without being top 80 on the Hot 100. The only other song I could think of like that is DF Dub's Country Girl.
This week it's in the top 13 on Billboard pop radio without being top 65 on Hot 100. The only other songs I could think of like that are Chainsmokers f/ Emily Warren - Side Effects, Dog's Eye View - Everything Falls Apart, and Three Days Grace - Never Too Late.

It doesn't matter how well it performed in November or prior to it being announced as a single. It's performance should reflect how popular/well it's doing now. Ideally, sure. But we all know that radio performance of songs don't always line up with how they're performing on other metrics now. Again, she is the moment. I remember "thank u, next" being in the Top 40 of my local station nearly 2 years after its release. Radio likes playing her. Neither one of us can exactly say why that is, but singles that linger in the top ten too long are not at all uncommon right now. I'm tired of hearing Scooter Braun conspiracies. Why didn't he do this for Justin Bieber, then? He had ample opportunity to do it with "Holy," "Lonely," and "Anyone". Or "Lonely," "Hold On," and "Peaches". Or the Shawn Mendes collab, even. And the only artists with undeniable good will seem to be Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber, conveniently the two golden treasures of Scooter Braun. It’s just making chart watching less exciting. Poor Demi Lovato, hope she's not paying the same rate for Scooter Braun as Ariana and Justin!

I think the problem isn't necessarily specially Scooter Braun, but just how narrow-minded and centralized pop radio is as a whole. Certain artists get automatic airplay they don't always deserve, and some bonafide hits by lesser known artists are paid dust.
I can't speak to whether it's always been like this, but it's certainly frustrating to watch. There's not really a good solution for it tho.

Ok but who said she wasn't But anyways I love Ari and this song but like the way pop radio has been is definitely becoming a little stale to an almost contrived sense, pov especially seems to make the strongest case right now due it literally being a non-presence on all other metrics at the moment but its already about to reach top 10 on pop I doubt anyone would be picking on pov had it had the streaming and sales presence of its preceding two singles but it hasn't had that since sometime after the release week of its parent record.

This would have felt way more organic if it had happened at most points during her post-Problem career.
The first two singles peaked way higher than what I feel they deserved in terms of their impact. She's had stuff like the sweetener singles peak lower and leave an actual lasting impression on culture. I don't see people blasting 34+35 a year from now on parties and stuff (I know it's early, it's just a feeling I have). Then this is slaying for some reason? Her team is amazing for sure. The releases since Stuck With You have all been very well calculated but I do feel like with the exception of the positions song none of these will ultimately do much for her career in the way sweetener or tun did.

Yeah its still a crime that the sweetener singles did not peak as high as they deserved, only one that maybe felt right was GIAW peaking at #8 (even though it deserved more). NTLTC especially should have been a #1 over honestly all her other chart toppers aside from TUN and 7 rings cause it definitely had more impact than everything else, it also literally was THE comeback Breathin also deserved top 10 at the very least and #1 on pop radio

Didn't this debut on callouts and then drop off the following week? How do you explain a song debuting with 90% familiarity suddenly vanishing the next week? I keep seeing this brought up, but this actually happens with fair regularity. There have been a handful of songs over the last year or so this has happened to: Supalonely, Blueberry Faygo, etc. I don't know why this happens, but it does seem as of it's an error on Mediabase's part. As for why it didn't debut until 90% familiarity? Again, that has been a trend for the last few years. Mediabase generally seems to wait quite a while before researching songs these days. Far be it for me to know why.

Haven't read this thread the past 2 days and wow, so many Scooter haters! He ain't God, people. Need I remind you that Problem, DW, S2S, NTLTC, GIAW all did NOT hit Hot 100 #1? Don't you think he tried to "manipulate" radio and streaming and sales all of those times? It actually took real-life drama and gossip for Ari to finally hit #1 with TUN.
So right now Ari is the undisputed main pop girl. It took long enough, she definitely deserves it. Yeah, corporate radio already knows people loved POV so they're playing it no matter what. Yeah, nothing lasts forever. Let's just enjoy it while it lasts!

If this song isn't meant to be a radio hit it will drop like a rock when it peaks. I think this song is a grower so I can see why their still playing it. Personally when everyone here was hyping it up I was thinking ?????? Then it finally hit me. This song is nice, sit back and enjoy. So what that it doesn't have a hook and isn't a "Bop".

Didn't we just have a thread in another part of this forum that radio is still a giant political game? And like actual payments may be outlawed but there are other means of influencing PDs and how many spins songs or artists are getting.
Really, it's just that radio game hasn't ever changed, just become somewhat less racist. I still don't know how Roger Davies and Capitol Records got Tina Turner back on top in her 40s in 1984.

Haven't read this thread the past 2 days and wow, so many Scooter haters! Does this surprise you? Have you not heard of his infamy? He did, though. What's your point? And the discussion here is about his influence on pop radio, where all of those except GIAW hit #1. His influence is huge. No one is saying he sends everything he touches to #1. Demi Lovato and Carly Rae Jepsen exist. But that doesn't mean he doesn't know how to game the system incredibly well when he's given the opportunity and resources. No one is saying these songs deserve to flop or that he's solely responsible for turning them into hits, we're saying he's using his power to make her recent hits bigger than they would have been otherwise through a not so aggressive manager.

Nah it was stalling out (I think in the top 10?), but it got a second wind around the time 'Into You' was starting to take off. I think #4 was its eventual peak? And it was a strong #4 too I think, pushing 15k spins if I recall.
Time to dig out the thread!

I gotta say while this isn't as boring as I thought it was on my first listen, this might actually be my least favorite single by her since her debut era (yaya my opinion doesn't matter) However, I've said it before and I'll say it again: It already had its streaming presence and scoring a Top 10 on Pop is not gonna help much here, I'd be surprised if at this rate it manages to repeak on the Hot 100 This could still get a boost on streaming e.g. with a viral video or something but they really should have released safety net or nasty which sadly won't see the light of day considering how deep she went with singles for her last album cycles

I'm not too worked about this song's performance, Pop pushed NF's "Lie" to #6 despite the song only reaching #52 on the Hot 100 and not being good in any other metric. There's tons of big pop hits from the past couple years which weren't doing well in sales or streaming, remember Lauv's "I Like Me Better"?
At least this time it's a big star like Ariana, it makes sense to shoot a song of hers to the top.

i like this song so i don't really mind that it's doing well on radio, but the disconnect between radio and what people are actually choosing to consume has never been greater. this is only one example out of many.

So what if pov isn't selling as well as her past songs. Ariana is still the top female artist on Pop. It means people are starting to hesitate before buying. That's usually the first crack in the foundation. No doubt she is the #1 female lead on pop right now, but that never lasts long. In a few years, you'll look back and say "wow, that's a lot of time on the charts - a lot of those weren't even good." Just like people do with Rihanna today.
