I don't get this "records will be muddled" perspective. If a song is among the 10 most popular songs of the week for 5 weeks every December for 20 years, then that's what it is. No one cares about the records besides chart nerds (like us) and labels. Why is it annoying seeing the actual #1 on top? We're already so used to "album bombs" and "sales-fueled #1s" and even the "holiday freeze" so just add one more thing to the list of things you can refer to whenever you want to say you hate Billboard and the Hot 100 but continue to follow it anyways.

Records will be more accurate, even if they are annoying to you. If a song returns to #1 year after year after year, it should be regarded as the biggest hit of all time, regardless of the circumstances. Everyone knows AIWFCIY - old, young, and everyone in between. The records would just reflect that.
