ew @ the Spotify thing. Somebody call the FCC, because payola is literally illegal. A crime. The idea needs to be bulldozed immediately.

It seems foolish to assume that AIWFCIY will never lose any popularity.. surely thereβs a limit to its ability to go back to #1 every single year, and only time will tell what that limit is

In other words it never lost popularity. Neither have other classics. I think it would be more about whether something else can come along and be even more popular each year. I could see some other classics going back and forth with "AIWFCIY" if they get used in a movie or something that gives them an extra nudge.

Kelly Clarkson's "Underneath the Tree" is already becoming a classic, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it challenge "AIWFCIY" in a couple years. "Santa Tell Me" has a ways to go but it's also growing in popularity each year, hopefully will re-enter the Hot 100 sooner than later.

Donβt get me wrong, I think youβre probably largely right, but Iβm just saying that, in theory, high schools wonβt still be teaching Shakespeare in another 700 years, and Christmas parties wonβt be putting Carey in rotation forever either.

This has me thinking.. it would be cool to lists of Christmas classics that are past their peaks vs. ones that are rising year after year

We've got Spotify data for 4 years now. I'll get started on a chart for positions Christmas week. I'd need to do it relative to other Christmas songs, since doing it by total streams or positions doesn't take into account differences due to the length of the week. One immediate finding- Jingle Bell Rock beat it in 2016.

Of course we canβt assume AIWFCIY will hit #1 for centuries to come, but itβs clear itβs not going anywhere anytime soon. Any decrease in success will be gradual I imagine, and judging from early performance its numbers may grow this year. Without a change in chart rules, it will likely hold many records (already does) by the end of the decade.
I agree that for a song to overtake it, the song would probably need a huge viral moment or be featured in a very popular holiday movie. Thatβs one advantage AIWFCIY has, the prominent feature in a Christmas movie that gets played to death.

All I Want For Christmas Is You will go number one earlier if Biden wins and people dedicate the song to him (I know inauguration day is in January but still...)

Christmas songs are absolutely gonna crush it this year on streaming services, wonβt they? Especially after no big artist is about to drop an album in the last two months. Jesus Christ outsold. We stan a legend.

After looking at the data any song were to beat AIWFCIY, I'd bet on Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love. It forst got a week in 2018, when it was the 55th most played Christmas track. In 2019, it was the 15th. The next largest increase I saw was BublΓ©'s Holly Jolly Christmas from 2017-18, which rose 17. Admittedly, I only checked the top twenty for 2019, but given that only sixty some charted you'd be hard pressed to find a bigger grower. I doubt it beats it anytime soon, but I wouldn't be shocked if it joined the upper echelon of Christmas songs.

Many people online. They compared it to TUN's streaming performance and concluded that it underperformed. It was still the second biggest female streaming debut of all time... nobody outside of stan twitter was comparing it to thank u, next especially weird considering the pure sales part, why would anyone drag the second best streaming debut of alltime when there were also 600k peple buying the album?

I think that was the point. The criticism was that her numbers are front-loaded because the only support she can get her fans to engage in is pure sales. That's a criticism I've seen more and more as we've settled into the streaming era. I saw it online for the first time during the reputation era because in truth, her eras have been front-loaded since then. Folklore, in a lot of ways, was vindication for Taylor, both critically and commercially (streaming-wise) after Lover. At least, to her detractors.

With the expected album bomb, I'm expecting dropouts for Don't Start Now, Break My Heart, UN DIA (not a good week for Dua Lipa), GREECE, The Bigger Picture, and *sigh*...Cardigan

Yeah All I Want For Christmas ain't really losing steam anytime soon. The biggest Christmas songs behind it... Have been around since the 80s at the earliest and the 60s at the latest and none of them even compare to Mariah when it comes to streams and sales.
It would take a modern Christmas classic (Underneath The Tree, Santa Tell Me, etc.) gaining over time like AIWFCIY to dethrone it anytime soon considering every year it's only increased lol.
