I knew I'd be out as soon as I saw the twist lol but at least it was close? good luck everyone! The moment I saw “Under The Table” on the list, I knew it was you! It’s okay bb, better luck next time! Wow Samb you really delivered with the reveals! Once a great host, always a great host. Congratulations to everyone who made it through and a kiss to everyone who didn’t. You all are great PS: I can’t believe it took me 20 years to listen to “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” and “Hyperballad” but ever since I discovered both of these songs earlier this year, they have grown to become two of my favorite songs of all time. I’m always happy to see them in games!

ROUND ONE - RESULTS
Welcome to the first elimination ceremony! You all have finished the first round and by reading the judges' comment, I conclude that it's a pretty solid round overall. Some of you did struggle but most of you excelled. One person stands out above everyone else. To keep things short, the winner of this round is...JAMESFLAME!The Smiths - "How Soon Is Now?"First time playing, first round and first win! You're showing a lot of promise, keep it up!Sambalada: "I think this is the best The Smiths song. The instrumentations have this gloomy feeling from the start that carries through the whole song. The lyrics, while not the best to portray the issue among this group of songs, are very clever and relatable. The vocals also nailed it for me. I've grown to appreciate this song more with each listen. Definitely GOAT material." (9.5)Fearless: "I love the instrumentals in this. I had listened to this before but couldn’t remember what it sounded like until the intro kicked in and I immediately knew - it’s one of those types of instrumentals that is iconic in a sense. I’ll probably have the lowest score on this out of all the judges, I just need to sit on this one a little more for it to move up my ratings." (8.7)Matt: "I cannot f**king wait until morrissey dies starts singing on this masterpiece every time i listen to it, possibly his magnum opus as i think "there is a light" is pretty overrated not gonna lie. no more words, just an incredible bassline to nod along to." (9.8)Violet: "f**k morrissey as a person but damn does he have some good songs and some relatable lyrics sometimes." (8.6)Willapted: "One of the greatest songs I’ve heard. Off the top of my head I don’t think I could name a single flaw in this. The lyrics, though simple, are exceptional, the instrumental is unbelievable and as much as it pains me to say, f***ing hell Morrissey sounds good here." (10)TOTAL: 46.6 | AVERAGE: 9.32The second best is...BB!Mac Miller - "Good News"You did exceptionally well! I'm excited to see what you'll bring to the competition after you got booted early last season!Sambalada: "I'm gonna be honest I wasn't so huge on "Good News" actually but it's such a perfect song to represent the theme. The production and his delivery matched well, and they create a soothing vibe." (7.3)Fearless: "I relate too much to the “good news, good news, good news that’s all they wanna hear” it’s kind of painful to listen to. I can’t even imagine what kind of headspace he was in. The somber production matches the song perfectly - there were many great releases in 2020 and this is definitely one of them." (9.3)Matt: "I could wax poetic all day about how this is one of my favorite songs of the year and one of the best on the topic of mental health in general, but I've got homework to finish so real quick; this is one of the purest and brightest yet simultaneously heart-crushing and depressing songs i've ever head and you'd have to be heartless to hate this one." (10)Violet: "So this was my jam way back in the beginning of the year. i remember the first time i heard it. i was in a really stressful situation and the music just calmed me down. it’s a really soothing composition and combined with miller’s vocals, it reminds me of “upside down” by jack johnson, which is a staple of my childhood. the lyrics hit particularly hard as well for me and are pretty relatable at times. RIP Mac Miller. He didn’t deserve to die as young as he did." (9.7)Willapted: "This song is just heart wrenching. I mean, what Mac is saying on here combined with what happened to him causes this song in particular to be a real tearjerker. Not quite my favourite song here, but probably the one that best fits the theme." (9.6)TOTAL: 45.9 | AVERAGE: 9.18The third best is...WOODS!Kendrick Lamar - "i"Your first choice might be rejected but your second one put you among the best of the round! Congratulations!Sambalada: "This is one of the poppier songs from the album which is probably why it's one of my favorites too. Kendrick's flows and imagery are great as usual and the beat is absolute fire. His oration at the end was bone chilling." (8.8)Fearless: "I like this selection; I definitely think of more sad/angsty/depressing etc. songs when I think about mental health but “i” is such a positive anthem with an uplifting and feel-good beat. While it’s not on the level of The Blacker The Berry/King Kunta/Alright for me, “i” is right below that." (9.0)Matt: "Maybe it's just because it's sitting in the context of one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time, but this one tends to get overlooked and downright hated on by kendrick fans when in fact, it's just a great, catchy song that while losing a bit of the lyrical elements and kendrick's great pen game, is more than made up for with its great instrumental and general feel-good vibe. dont hate it slaps." (9.2)Violet: "If this hook doesn’t bring you a smile whenever i have no clue what to say to you." (9.4)Willapted: "For the record, I’m ranking the album version – the single would be like an 8. This isn’t one of my favourites from TPAB, but it is still on TPAB. Obviously fits the theme too." (9.4)TOTAL:45.8 | AVERAGE: 9.16Next...INDULGE!Bobbie Gentry - "Ode To Billie Joe"Sambalada: "It's a beautiful song. The instrumental is gorgeous especially when the violins came in. Bobbie delivers a great performance, she tells the story in a way that caught your interest." (8.6)Fearless: "Ooh a country song! The songwriting in this tune is just phenomenal. The way that it is revealed that the protagonist was Billie Joe’s girlfriend to the twist at the end where her father dies years from then and her mom is in a similar place as she was (but never notices that Billie Joe was her boyfriend which is why she behaved the way she did earlier in the song). Love this pick." (9.3)Matt: "I think what makes this song so well-written is that the actual mental health issues which drove the title character to suicide are ambiguous, as bobbie gentry focuses her lyrics on the family sitting around the dinner table and their various reactions, mostly slight sadness and confusion but overall indifference, which I think highlights a lot of the serious issues still in place decades later surrounding how seriously mental health is taken. Bobbie's voice is pretty sultry and comforting, and coupled with the pretty instrumental arrangements makes this a fantastic listen, start to finish." (8.8)Violet: "I really don’t have much to say here outside of excellent storytelling combined with a great performance all around is a surefire way to make a genre classic." (9.0)Willapted: "Lyrically this honestly hits very close to home for me right now. I’m struggling to find the exact words to say about this but basically the storytelling is super touching and the song fits the theme perfectly, great pick." (9.1)TOTAL: 44.8 | AVERAGE: 8.96Next...
ZEDD!Jimmy Eat World - "The Middle"Sambalada: "Um I actually was never big on this song. However, this being sent for this round make me pay more attention to the lyrics. And they are great. It's still not one of my favorite sonically, but it's not like I hate it or something. I'm just indifferent about it." (6.6)Fearless: "An early 2000s classic and jam. It’s a pretty simple song when it’s all said and done, but I feel like it’s also what makes it such an effective anthem." (9.5)Matt: "Unlike a lot of songs in this set, the lyrics in this song are pretty corny and this song is even sometimes seen as a sellout track, but I think that's the heart of this song; it manages to pump people up and deal with issues like depression without talking down to them, and being a great, hard-hitting pop punk tune to boot makes this pretty much the whole package. Even if sometimes I find the chorus goofy, I won't deny that it usually puts a smile on my face." (8.9)Violet: "This song is very comforting for me for a variety of personal reasons. this is pretty much the perfect pop punk song." (10)Willapted: "This one means a lot to me, really a perfect choice for this round. Every element of this just works, and combines to make a song that never fails to put me in a good mood." (9.7)TOTAL: 44.4 | AVERAGE: 8.88Next...MAYMAN!Kendrick Lamar - "u"
Sambalada: "I actually enjoy "i" more than this one but for this theme, this song nailed the intended imagery much harder so I need to bump the score to be higher than "i". It has a great concept and it's executed very well. We can feel his regret through his words." (8.9)Fearless: "Inside To Pimp A Butterfly, this is probably the counterpart to the self-loving, celebratory anthem that is “i’. Not as big of a fan of this one, even though every song in TPAB is at least good. I know Kendrick’s rapping in the second and third verses is intentional but I find it almost annoying." (7.3)Matt: "And here we get the other side of the coin; one of the most personal cuts on TPAB and possibly the most praised album track of all. Sonically, I won't deny that I don't think this just plain sounds as good as most of kendrick's best, which is why as fantastic as it is i just can't seem to return to it as often, but I think that's the point; Kendrick's off the beat, rant-type flow in the first half linked to the great instrumental breakdown is great, and when the wild, off the beat sad kendrick rant comes a the end it definitely cements itself as one of his most memorable tracks." (9.0)Violet: "Damn does kendrick give a good vocal performance here. and damn does it make this song a hard listen. my gosh." (8.7)Willapted: "So, in two consecutive rounds you’ve managed to pick my two favourite songs from my favourite album, bravo. I mean, there’s not much I could say about this that wouldn’t be immediately obvious from listening to the song. Ignoring the masterful musical aspects of the track, the lyrics here hit like a bullet train & draw you into Kendrick’s mental struggles like nothing else. Obviously a very difficult listen, but a worthwhile one nonetheless." (10) TOTAL: 43.9 | AVERAGE: 8.78Next...MOD!Sufjan Stevens - "Should Have Known Better"Sambalada: "The story being told in this song is very beautiful. Sufjan really has a way with words. The instrumental that surround the lyrics make this a heartwarming listen. It makes me feel a lot of emotion. The change of atmosphere towards the end is beautiful, like he tried to give a hopeful ending to the listeners." (8.4)Fearless: "Well, this song and the Carrie & Lowell album have helped me cope with my depression which rears its ugly head from time to time, and I sent this in the last season of Last Stand so how would I not love it? The song has a depressing/comforting but also hopeful tone to it especially in the second half of the song where the production switches up a little - listening to this song feels like wrapping myself in a blanket if that makes any sense. The lyrics are also amazing, from just expressing various feelings one may have while dealing with depression to mixing his memories/Oregon scenery." (10)Matt: "I'm not sure what changed to make the pretty minimalistic production grow off me, but despite the music sounding pretty I think the melodies generally bore me and i am currently super tired so that could be contributing to it to be fair. lemme look at this objectively real quick; it's a very well written song and it fits the theme well. f**k them kids bro." (7.8)Violet: "The instrumental really doesn’t matter that much here. it does its job at providing a good backdrop for the very emotional lyrics stevens brings here. i can’t really say much else outside of this song being really great at conveying those emotions." (8.3)Willapted: "Not a lot to say about this one, aside from that I love it. Beautiful, raw vocals and instrumental and fits the theme to a T." (9.2)TOTAL: 43.7 | AVERAGE: 8.74Next...WALT91!Paramore - "Hard Times"Sambalada: "I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this is the standout on its parent album, and even on Paramore's whole discography. The song is a huuuge jam and has very optimistic vibes. It's gonna be hard for them if they ever plan to top this song." (9.3)Fearless: "While I’m a bit lukewarm on what I’ve heard from After Laughter, I do enjoy “Hard Times”. While I don’t think it’s the best I’ve heard from Paramore, I just can’t deny the catchiness of the track." (7.8)Matt: "Manages to slap incredibly hard with actually good production (especially the marimba line) and be uplifting without talking down to you, catchy without being corny, and despite the lyrics being pretty basic they do their job well." (8.6)Violet: "Holy s**t is this satisfying to listen to. like that vocoder part at the end my f**king god. anyways yeah this is an absolute banger with a killer vocal performance and lyrics that fit the energetic nature of the instrumental weirdly well." (8.7)Willapted: "This has always been one of their best songs to me. Love the lyrics and instrumental & overall this is just a jam." (8.6)TOTAL: 43.0 | AVERAGE: 8.6Next...JAMES!Manchester Orchestra - "The Grocery"Sambalada: "Every songs I've heard by Manchester Orchestra so far are gorgeous. This is no exception. I thought it's gonna be like a huge banger from the intro. It's not. However, it was the lyrical content and the vocalist's delivery that sells it for me. The bursting instrumentations at the end also helped in solidifying a build up. Like a climax to a story." (8.0)Fearless: "I don’t think I appreciated a Manchester Orchestra song outside of “The Gold” as much until now. Last.fm tells me I’ve listened to this once but I’m pretty sure this listen hit me different than it did then. The music is beautiful and I think the lyrics are unique in the sense that approaching suicidal thoughts by the way of causing a shooting at a grocery store." (8.8)Matt: "Hell of a soundscape created with this one; the shoegazy guitars mixed in with the vocals on the chorus make it pretty uplifting, and I also like the transitions into the lighter parts of the song before building up again to the climax. Lyrically this song almost creates a hopeless vibe at the start, where the narrator is trying to escape his situation any way he can, and coupled with the arrangements of the song makes for an overall great track. yekos jf kl." (8.8)Violet: "So i only really know manchester orchestra for “the gold” which i know some people on pulse absolutely love. unfortunately, i am not one of them. i find “the gold” really boring even after giving it repeated listens and it really doesn’t do much for me. and neither does this song really in terms of its sound. the songwriting however, is really strong here and is genuinely fantastic, though i can only give so many more points because of that given that i don’t like how the song sounds." (7.0)Willapted: "The lyrical themes here are very interesting and I can really appreciate them. Musically though, this one doesn’t do as much as ‘The Gold’ for me." (7.9)TOTAL: 40.5 | AVERAGE: 8.1Next...NICK PERKINS!Radiohead - "Creep"Sambalada: "There were times when I was convinced this was Radiohead's magnum opus. Just because this was their biggest hit of course. Right now I wouldn't put it anywhere close to their best but I still think it's a good song." (7.4)Fearless: "I don’t particularly have much to say about the song since it’s pretty good and I like it a lot but it’s not amazing. This might be weird but the instrumentals somehow make me feel warm inside? By the way, I would’ve given “No Surprises” close to a perfect score since that is the Radiohead song I turn to when I’m down (and it’s such a good song)." (8.0)Matt: "it's a pretty good alternative rock song and despite this obviously being radiohead's most disliked era, this is still up there with their most noteworthy songs for a reason and it's got a great guitar line and some solid melodies to elevate it." 😈 (7.3)Violet: "It’s been ages since i last listened to this which is funny considering it was in my personal rankdown over a year and a half ago. anyways, relistening to this with new ears is underwhelming to say the least. everything sounds like it did. just. the lyrics kinda lost their punch. do i still relate to them? yeah. but i don’t know. something about this song feels flat. maybe it’s just how much i listened to it back in fall 2018 and how much it reminds me of that period of my life and where i was. and boy do i never want to return to that place again." (8.5)Willapted: "This is an interesting pick. Radiohead have multiple songs I’d think would score higher & fit this theme (How to Disappear Completely, No Surprises, Let Down etc.) but I can’t help but really enjoy this regardless. There is certainly an argument that this is nothing more than a generic grunge hit, but I do think at least some of their talent was showing when they wrote this and that it’s better than a lot of similar songs of its time." (8.4)TOTAL: 39.6 | AVERAGE: 7.92Next...HAMED!Christine & The Queens - "Doesn't Matter"Sambalada: "Christine doesn't really have an exceptional voice but she's selling her concept very well with every words. The instrumental isn't groundbreaking but it gets the job done. Overall, it's a cute song. Nothing amazing but cute." (7.4)Fearless: "I love “Girlfriend” but outside of that one Christine & The Queens isn’t exactly my favorite. The songs are good but they don’t quite grab me that much. “Doesn’t Matter” seems to fall into that category too outside of the part about sunlight - I thought that was pretty cool. The bass was nice too, but I don’t love the sparse production outside of that and the drums." (7.5)Matt: "Taken at face value, this song is alright; it's got a pretty good pulse, some catchy melodies, all the normal parts of the praised dance pop songs that we've all heard a million times; but this is elevated a bit by the lyrics where christine writes about wondering if her life matters and if anyone would care if she slipped away, which is always an interesting perspective to hear about. good stuff." (7.6)Violet: "Decent song. christine has better though. i like the instrumental and the vocal performance is pretty good but outside of that there really isn’t much to say. the song does run a bit long though." (7.4)Willapted: "Christine always seems to sit in a similar area of quality for me (aside from Gone, at least), which is good but not great. I like the vocals, like the production & the lyrics aren’t as obvious as others on the list, but I can still appreciate them. Overall, it’s pretty damn good but not necessarily something I’d return to much." (7.7)TOTAL: 37.6 | AVERAGE: 7.52Next...SLAYER!Paramore - "Fake Happy"Sambalada: "Paramore really hit their peak in this era. Every track is a perfect bubbly pop song but they hide something deeper. I think most people can relate to this song. The lyrics captured what people in general are feeling in a simple way, without them being cringe-y. The contrast with the fun instrumental further explores that concept." (8.0)Fearless: "I don’t love After Laughter like some of you do, I find it to be likeable but it doesn’t quite reach the level of love. The contrast between the happy-sounding music versus the lyrics enhances the theme of the song that states that no one is truly happy and everyone is faking happiness." (7.2)Matt: "In general I think I've always preferred Paramore's upbeat, hard-hitting guitar filled tracks over their lighter, breezier ones like this one. In addition, I don't think this gains any points through the lyrics which i like less than most of these songs; they've just got a really amateur and surface-level feel like some alessia cara type s**t. I love hayley williams as a vocalist though, so still gets a positive score right here." (6.5)Violet: "I’m considering this song’s lyrics a personal attack. also please hug me hayley williams i know we both need a hug right now." (8.1)Willapted: "It’s good. The lyrics are good and musically I like it. Doesn’t really get out of the ‘good’ territory for me though." (7.6)TOTAL: 37.4 |AVERAGE: 7.48The last person to escape the bottom two is...WRIP!Phum Viphurit - "Hello, Anxiety"Sambalada: "A great first listen. You wouldn't expect a lot from the title but the song itself is so groovy and fun. Fun might be an ironic choice of word but that's exactly the vibes I got from it. And I enjoy it a lot." (8.0)Fearless: "This is a cute, funky indie pop tune. I’m not too big on the vocals (they’re a little too soft for my liking) but the music has a nice atmosphere to it. I also applaud the choice here, it’s definitely the most “unknown” song here." (6.9)Matt: "Hi anxiety i'm dad." (6.6)Violet: "Idk wtf a phum viphurit is and honestly when i first dove into this i was expecting some generic ass white girl dance-pop like that s**tty song about disney that charted this year. instead of that though, we have a pretty groovy indie pop tune. quite the pleasant surprise here. the vocal performance is pretty nice too. however, the main flaw of the song is the lyrics which don’t really do much to me and don’t really cover any new ground for me. i feel like they lack any punch which is much needed to back up the groovy instrumental." (7.4)Willapted: "This was the one song here I was not familiar with at all and I like it, I would describe everything about this as pleasant. I didn’t love it however, nothing really connected with me and it felt slightly nondescript, for lack of a better word." (7.0)TOTAL: 35.9 | AVERAGE: 7.18
You took a big risk with sending probably the most unknown song of the round. Your song was well-received, but it got outclassed by almost everyone else. Anyways you still make it to the next round, congratulations! Which means the bottom two are... SHRUGGIE & TAY
I'll just let you know that there's a wide gap separating Wrip who got 13th place with you guys, meaning the judges all thought your songs are so much weaker than the rest.
One of you will be eliminated.

The last person to advance to the next round is...TAY!matchbox twenty - "Unwell"Sambalada: "I'm giving the same score I gave this song in Season 1 because my opinion on it hasn't changed a bit. It's a good song but lacked the timeless feel that could make me go back to it." (6.0)Fearless: "It might be an unpopular opinion but “Unwell” is my favorite matchbox twenty song (“Push” and “3am” are its only competition for me) - I’ve started to grow tired of it after playing the song quite a lot when I was at my lowest but it’s still a song that resonates with me. The banjo riff at the beginning and the end of the song is nice too." (8.8)Matt: "Yeah it's corny but i've always liked singing along to the chorus and the lyrics, as goofy as they are, still give me some optimism and display a pretty relatable and almost poetic scenario. That being said, this isn't nearly as good of a song than most of these, and that banjo line has always put me off a bit." (6.6)Violet: "Grocery store-core at its finest. really hasn’t done much to me to begin with and overplay has killed any enjoyment i might get out of the song." (4.2)Willapted: "This song/band have never appealed to me much. The lyrics are fine and all but don’t hit as hard as most of the other chosen songs. I think my biggest gripe with the song might be the chorus, the melody does very little for me." (5.5) TOTAL: 31.1 | AVERAGE: 6.22
You were right that this song was a safe pick in Season 1 but the competition is much harder this time and you have to be more creative. Anyways, you're still safe to make it to the next round. Congratulations!Which means...
SHRUGGIE, I'm sorry but you've been eliminated.
twenty one pilots - "Migraine"
Sambalada: "A first listen for me. I can't say it left a lasting impression but it's a good song. Very good choice of instrumentations but my God the singing irritated me at several points of the song." (6.3) Fearless: "So if anyone has seen me participate in an RD with 21P in it, I almost always rank them low. Not a fan of Tyler Joseph’s vocal tone or delivery at all, but this is worse than what I’ve heard from him in the songs I know - the verses are pretty annoying to listen to. The song itself is pretty fun but I would definitely like it more if it’s not by 21P." (4.4) Matt: "I guess this fits the theme, but that's pretty much it. tyler has sounded pretty good rapping in the past, so i don't know why he sounds so out of touch with what he's singing about and why his vocals have such odd effects on them, but it definitely doesn't help it sound good. The chorus is definitely the saving grace here." (5.4) Violet: "The lyrics are not terrible but holy shit the verses are annoying. sorry. the chorus is FINE though." (4.0) Willapted: "Maybe if I was 12 I would’ve really liked this. Not so much anymore. I really cannot stand when Tyler Joseph raps and this is one of the worst examples of it I think I’ve heard. The vocal effects on the chorus don’t help either. I don’t particularly like the lyrics either but they win a few points back for the song at least." (4.2) TOTAL: 24.3 | AVERAGE: 4.86
Unfortunately, this is the end for you. You might say you're fucked because your first choice is unavailable. But Woods also had to send an alternate and he finished in the top 3, so I don't think that's a good enough reason. Thank you for participating :'(
