#80 Back Where You Belong - .38 Special: I'll happily elevate Caught Up in You or Hold on Loosely, but until then...
#79 Lights Out - Peter Wolf: Peter Wolf really went all in for being quirky after leaving J. Geils. The "lights out, uh huh" hook is too silly to dislike and Wolf has a certain charisma to him. Unfortunately the instrumental work suffers without the J. Gels Band backing him up.
#78 Infatuation - Rod Stewart: At this point of his career, Rod Stewart had switched genres about four times in the span of six years. I appreciate it when an artist is versatile, but in Rod Stewart's case, it just seems like he wasn't sure how to follow up the surprise success of "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" This seems to be an attempt at combining his dance music success with some AOR to please both sides of his fanbase, but the songwriting just feels uninspired.
#77 Rock Me Tonite - Billy Squier: An okay but not particularly inspired rocker. This is one of the few Jim Steinman produced hits where I didn't immediately detect his presence.
#76 A Fine, Fine Day - Tony Carey: Not the most exciting track here, but the western influences do give it a unique flavor for this year.
#75 Footloose - Kenny Loggins: I like this as carefree pop song, but not so much on a rock rankdown.
#74 I Can't Hold Back - Survivor: Survivor had their style and they stuck to it. This one doesn't have the addictive bombast of High on You and charted in a much stronger year, so right outside the door of my bottom 20 was as high as I could take this one.
#73 High on Emotion - Chris de Burgh: I remember hearing Don't Pay the Ferryman by Chris de Burgh and being surprised at how much more dynamic and dramatic it was than his hit songs. Not sure why radio seemed to pick his more MOR tracks like this one.
#72 No Way Out - Jefferson Starship: A few years ago, I'd always assumed that Jefferson Starship was a moderately popular rock band that lived in the shadow of Jefferson Airplane. As I've looked over the charts in more recent years though, I've found it astonishing how popular they were on rock radio. All of their '70s albums made R&R's AOR year-end lists, and every '80s album by Jefferson Starship, Starship, and the KBC Band produced at least one top 10 on the mainstream rock chart. Personally, I don't think I've heard anything from them that was better than "above average." The keyboards and chorus on this specific song were alright enough, but the rest of the song is pretty mundane.
#71 When You Close Your Eyes - Night Ranger: A harmless stadium rocker with a nice hook and just enough charm.
#70 Heaven - Bryan Adams: I don't think it's bad, but all these Bryan Adams ballads start to run together after a while.
#69 I Want a New Drug - Huey Lewis & the News: Like most Huey Lewis hits, it's nothing all that exceptional in terms of songwriting, but it's perfectly enjoyable for the accessible pop rock that it is.
#68 I Can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar: Well, at least it gets to be his highest ranked song. Personally, I love this track - it's like a four minute encapsulation of '80s rock silliness.
#67 Pink Houses - John Mellencamp: Like our game host, I've heard this about a million times too many, but after giving it a fresh listen for this game, I think it's actually a pretty good heartland rock track if you can manage to escape it for a few weeks.
#66 On the Dark Side - John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band: More Springsteen-esque material from John Cafferty. It's fairly derivative, but I've always liked the bass and Cafferty's vocals here.
#65 Got a Hold on Me - Christine McVie: This was an okay, light-hearted pop rock song; not much else to say about it.
#64 Slow an' Easy - Whitesnake: Solid hard rock music with a bit of a blues edge here - pretty nice to hear in this era. David Coverdale's vocals on this song are not his best though.
#63 If This Is It - Huey Lewis & the News: More perfectly fine, middle-of-the-pack Huey.
#62 New Girl Now - Honeymoon Suite: I feel like there is a serviceable power pop track buried beneath all the excess production work and '80s-isms here.
#61 The Heart of Rock & Roll - Huey Lewis & the News: The quality of these Huey Lewis tracks is pretty interchangeable; it's just a matter of which one I was in the mood for when I was ranking.
#60 Oh Sherrie - Steve Perry: Easily the best of Steve Perry's solo hits. Granted it just sounds like a pop leaning Journey ballad, but you could certainly do worse in terms of '80s ballads.
#59 Blue Jean - David Bowie: I didn't find this terribly compelling on either rankdown. The doo-wop influences are a little fun, but I feel like Bowie was phoning it in on songwriting duties.
#58 Take Me Away - Blue Öyster Cult: This album was made after the band's membership started falling apart but before the hit doctors were brought in. The production is a bit too trendy for BOC, but the songwriting still has that dark edge that distinguished the band.
