"Helix/Sum 41 controversy After Sum 41's version of "Rock You" was released, Brian Vollmer and Glen "Archie" Gamble were to meet Sum 41 at a Fubar promotional event, only to find the Sum 41 members uninterested in meeting or talking to them. Later that day on a television broadcast, Sum 41 stated that Helix were "rock gods" and claimed to be fans. This snubbing caused Vollmer to refer to them as "Scum 41" on occasion" The things people find notable enough to put on Wikipedia... EXTRA

60. Oh Sherrie - Steve PerryThe Steve Perry vocal magic took this pop song right up my list. It has that mini guitar solo, but it's really comes down to Steve Perry has paid his dues on the Rock format. His vocals always have a strong rock vibe and the fact that its a song about a chick he wants. This is practically a Powerballad. Those are spot on for any Rock format. 59. Blue Jean - David Bowie I knocked this one down quite a bit in favor of bigger hard rock songs. I still love this song. Modern Rock is it's best format, but I would have given it a fairly high rank on Pop as well. 58. Take Me Away - Blue Öyster CultThis really felt like a first time listen, but at the same time had similar guitar strums to "Burning For You". I might have under ranked it a bit, but it didn't really wow me except when the chorus rolled around. 57. Runaway - Bon JoviA lot of times that first time I heard a band on Rock format becomes my favorite song. KLOS didn't really jump on the Glam MEtal sound , but MTV did so it quickly became one of my favorites of the year. The synths really give the illusion that the song is faster and Jon sounds incredible on this song. The lyrics follow the crushed Hollywood dreams vibe only this time she was just kicked out of her home and forced to live it on the streets. Too bad for the girl, but we got a great song out of it right? "She Don't Know Me" also got a bit of airplay on MTV. Both were big top 10 hits on my charts. 56. Murder - David GilmourGot the proggy Pink Floyd vibes from this one , and that's all she wrote. 55. Authority Song - John MellencampIts right about this 60's range that I began to have a hard time ranking songs. I charted and loved all these. I'm almost embarrassed you all put this song higher than my rank, because this is such a banger, but sacrifices had to be made. 54. Nobody Told Me - John LennonTruth be told unless with the rest of The Beatles I didn't really care for John Lennon's solo material. I can say the same thing about Paul. Their song's felt incomplete without the rest of the band members. 53. Crumblin' Down - John Mellencamp This is a decent slot for the song. Maybe I should have put "Authority Song" a little higher, but I specifically remember liking this one more. I think it had to do with his moves in the music video. 52. If I'd Been the One - .38 SpecialNot as good as "Back Where You Belong" but loads better than "The Sound of Your Voice". I'm still in awe how that song id their best performance to date. I remember loving this one for the melody. There wasn't any mind blowing guitar solo part, but it did have a strong melodic factor. The music video with the running horses is gorgeous. 51. Sister Christian - Night RangerNight Ranger Powerballads were very powerful. Kelly Keagy's vocals took it to epic proportions. I put all three Night Ranger songs in my top 20. Imagine That. 50. We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted SisterF U C K yeah, and I'm not even the highest ranker. Daryl the Beryl beats my rank. I would love to know what makes this Hair/Glam Metal so fierce that it made your top 25. 49. Looks That Kill - Mötley Crüeoh nooooooooo. I was started to get very high hopes for the song. Welcome to my favorite Crüe song ever. The late 80's stuff was fierce and all that, but they really had a distinguished Heavy metal sound on the first two albums. Their image was true metal. This was when Vince looked mean, lean and sounded fantastic. They all did, and the song was just as take no prisoners hard. The lyrics went hand in hand with the music video. I love when they do that. 48. Changes - YesI'm not the biggest fan of Yes, but this one rocked pretty damn good. The guitar arrangements sounded more Whitesnake than prog rock. Even on the length isn't too taxing on my ears, because it really puts those guitar strums in the frontline. I only put one other one higher than this one. 47. You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want) - Joe JacksonThis is the only song on the list that I truly hated. Even back than. It just tuned me out from all angles, and still does. 46. Runner - Manfred Mann's Earth BandI didn't recall liking this song back then as much as I did this time around. It probably has to do with the fact that I relate to "Blinded By The Light". I will say thsi. This song was always fierce Album rock. Also has that Night Flight Orchestra Knight Rider soundtrack vibe. 45. Leave It - YesNot really a song I hate, cuz I would either change the channel or the station when it came on, but This was just too much prog for my sensitive ears to handle. It's Album Rock. I won't deny it that, but was all just too silly to me, and I didn't even have to take into consideration the stupid ass MV either. 44. Voices - Russ BallardFor all the great songs he wrote for other bands it's a miracle he couldn't add some of that magic into his own song. This came off as a prog rock night mare. No ups no downs, and no emotion in his vocals. I got no heartbeat from it whatsoever. I'm just glad it's out. 43. It Can Happen - YesI can give this one a thumbs up. Not a favorite of mine, but it does turn down the level of progg, and it was catchy in the chorus. I also happen to enjoy the sitar. I won't complain that it's out, but I would really love to see some easy listening pop songs drop. My panic level is on the rise. 42. I'll Wait - Van HalenThis is probably the one time David Lee Roth took on a Powerballad. The thing I loved about this song is how the synths took center stage. This is also David Lee Roth at his most subdued. The music is 100% Van Halen, but Eddie really showed some master talent on the synths. 41. Legs - ZZ TopThis was the first album I heard from the band. later I discovered "Tubesnake Boogie", but this southern hard rock style of theirs' kept me on the burner for a while. Great guitar groove, and I equally Loved the music video too Trivia: Two of the ZZ Top girls Jeana and Kymberly were Playboy Playmates. I think Danièle went on to be a teacher or something? Another night of hard hits to some of Rock music's biggest names. At this point I believe that if Michael Jackson " Human Nature" had made this top 100 list it would go top 10.

Extras: In a lot of ways these extras end up with more dignity by staying off this Rd. Balls to the Wall - AcceptLet's start off with the fiercest of the bunch. I charted this one. A modest top 30 rank, but I remember loving that chorus, and thinking it sounded a lot like AC/DC. Now days I would have ranked this a lot higher than most of the songs I actually gave top 10 action to. Gloria - The DoorsI'll take any Doors song on any rankdown and just like the usual PULSE practice would put this song just as high on a Country or Rap RD as I would on a rock format. True Story. This song sounds like a standard Doors song, but that is the magic of it. U2 did a totally different song with the same title, but equally just as awesome. Friday Night - Vandenberg I showcased this one about a month ago on my own weekly charts with Y&T's "Summertime Girls". The upbeat sound of Glam Metal was such a pleasure to listen to. This one and "Burning Heart" had different vibes, but both are great for any Hair Metal playlist. Satisfy Me - Billy SatelliteAnother one that should come to know surprise I charted is this album rock favorite. I didn't even know or ever heard of Billy Satellite, and use to credit this one to Foreigner on my chart. LOL! Faraway Eyes - AdrenalinThis was definitely a first time listen. Not bad for that REO Speedwagon AOR sound. This literally feels like 'Hi Infidelity' material. The bass line kept my interest up til the end. Bad Girls - Don FelderI knew Don Felder as the guy who had the best song off the Heavy Metal Movie soundtrack. "Take A Ride On Heavy Metal" This song is pretty awesome. I didn't recall it, but I was wowed by those same kinda Guitar slides from "Life In The Fast Lane". Still my favorite Eagles' song to this date. Romancing the Stone - Eddy GrantI remember this one. Not bad. The song has a pretty good Guitar solo that could make it suitable for the list, but his vocals don't. I'm just glad I was spared the task of ranking tanking this on a Mainstream Rock Rd. I don't really need "Electric Avenue" showing up either. Too Late it's coming next year. sigh... ***I don't wanna end the night with this song, so let's move on to some songs I actually charted. let's start off by skimming through that "The Mask" thing. That one was not written with me in mindSatisfied Man - Molly HatchetNot too satisfied with this one. I like the guitars of course, but the rest kinda falls flat. Feels too too poppy for Molly Hatchet. It's like they wanted to take a page from ZZ Top and get a top 10 hit,...and failed. eh I'll give it a thumbs up for being melodic, and kinda going for that " Flying High Again" guitar riff here and there. Los Desaparecidos - Little Steven & the Disciples of SoulA harder vibe for a Heartland song. I like this one. The synths sound very Bon Jovi.Tell Me - FastwayI remember "Say What You Will". That one was fierce. THis one is pretty good. They kinda sound like Mötley Crüe when they started adding more of a Blues Rock meets Metal vibe. Vocals are fantastic almost going into Vince Neil mode, but the song needs more variety in the guitars. Not bad tho. Trivia time. One of the biggest names in Eurobeat also goes by the alias Fastway. Rock You - HelixNow we are getting to my creme of the crop. My favorite is hands down "Heavy Metal Love", but I'll take this anthem fueled "Rock Me" over half the songs on the actual top 100. Baby Come Back - Billy RankinIt's been years since I heard this song. Gave this one a modest 30's chart peak. That chorus is just sooo damn catchy. I used to think this was Billy Squier. The percussion sounds like "Everybody Wants You". Don't Stop Runnin' - Y&TFor this band my favorite two are the poppiest "Summertime Girls" ,and one of their fiercest " Mean Streak". This one falls in the middle, but I also charted this one. Too bad we never get to rank them. "Summertime Girls" spent a decent amount of weeks in the top 20, and just missed the top 100 of 1985. i think the problem with the band is that they never really had their own sound. On this one they go into their most Sammy Hagar mode. I love the song, but maybe the fans wanted them to have their own unique style. I also think they were at their most Heavy Metal on the 'Mean Streak' album.

#57 Runaway - Bon Jovi: I've been pleasantly surprised by how little mid-80s Bon Jovi has gotten tanked. In my opinion, they were a perfectly fine rock band, even a slightly creative one at times, before the gloss of the late '80s took over their sound and remolded them into the Bon Jovi that pop culture loves to hate. I doubt this specific track will convince anyone who hates the band, but it's still a fun bit of '80s rock with a solid stadium rock chorus and a memorable keyboard riff.
#56 Murder - David Gilmour: My general impression of David Gilmour has always been that he's an amazing guitarist but an uninteresting songwriter. This sounded better than his usual fare though. There's a nice ebb and flow to the flourishes that helps contextualize his guitar work on this track so that it doesn't just devolve into pretty but empty noodling.
#55 Authority Song - John Mellencamp: While there are plenty of okay John Mellencamp tracks, I think this and Rain on the Scarecrow are the only songs of his that I actually love. Whereas Rain on the Scarecrow has a darker feel to it that sets it apart, there's really nothing too unusual going on here - it's a typical Mellencamp outing carried to greatness entirely by the strength of the performance, particularly Mellencamp's vocals and the guitar riffs.
#54 Nobody Told Me - John Lennon: Pretty divided opinions on this one it seems. I personally couldn't get past how extremely forced the chorus felt.
#53 Crumblin' Down - John Mellencamp: And now we're back to normal John Mellencamp, with another good but not outstanding track that has been played way too much.
#52 If I'd Been the One - .38 Special: The relatively strong melody makes this one of their better AOR era tracks.
#51 Sister Christian - Night Ranger: It's a fine '80s power ballad, I'm just a bit burned out on it. Like it or dislike it, you have to admit its got a memorable chorus.
#50 We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister: This has no ambitions beyond being '80s glam fun... and I'm fine with that. I love the over-the-top presentation and the big sing-a-long choruses Twisted Sister had during this era.
#49 Looks That Kill - Mötley Crüe: A significant improvement over their cover from last year. I like the rawer sound this group had during their early years.
#48 Changes - Yes: I got a vinyl record of this album out of a bargain bin a few years ago, and I remember listening to the xylophone in the opening for about a full minute before I realized the record was skipping. Guess I was too used to their earlier material. Outside of the xylophone bits, this is pretty typical of pop era Yes: catchy melodic rock with a few nods to their prog past. It's a perfectly adequate song, but not the best they had to offer this year.
#47 You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want) - Joe Jackson: No seriously, why was this an active/mainstream exclusive? It's a good jazzy piece by Joe Jackson with very natural sounding production, but ranking it against the other tracks here was quite a challenge.
#46 Runner - Manfred Mann's Earth Band: I like the staccato guitar stabs leading in to the chorus, but this one just kept sinking below marginally better songs as I was ranking.
#45 Leave It - Yes: While it settles into a nice groove once it gets going, the backing vocals just sound kind of silly to me, and not in a good way.
#44 Voices - Russ Ballard: I like the sense of storytelling in Russ Ballard's songwriting more than the actual music here if that makes any sense. The slightly unstable sounding instrumental break was a nice touch though.
#43 It Can Happen - Yes: I'm aware some artists have gotten tanked or elevated hard, but has anyone ever lost three songs in the mid-pack so quickly? While a bit on the light side musically for Yes, I found myself increasingly liking the hooks here with repeated listens.
#42 I'll Wait - Van Halen: The weakest Van Halen song on this rankdown by a pretty large margin in my opinion - feels less "urgent" than their other two selections. While the synthesizers the band brought in on this album proved divisive, they did work them in pretty well on this track. I liked it enough for it to make top half, but there are other songs from 1984 (the album) that I would have preferred as a third Van Halen track.
#41 Legs - ZZ Top: Back-to-back songs that feature rock bands reinventing themselves with synthesizers. Thanks to the higher energy, this one succeeds much more than I'll Wait. Hopefully, ZZ can get some better ratings starting next year.

lame
I like a good amount of their stuff but they're usually at their best for me when they turn up the jangling
(also I slightly underranked Go Insane, should have been in my top 20)

The last song to miss the top half in Alt now misses the top 30 on Active. congrats to thethirdcurry for being the second person in this very rankdown to clear your bottom 10 with your 100. And you're guaranteed to not be the last player this happens to, either! Also, this chart peak is even lower than "Slow an' Easy" lol 33 What Is Love?
