Starboy and In The Night having the same radio peak does not feel right lol. Anyway so glad to see this still climbing! I really thought it was about to peak in the lower half of the top 10. Starboy reached top 10 in like near record time if I recall correctly... but I think callouts were poor (and somehow they weren't good for IFIC either).

Yeah both Starboy's & IFIC's callouts were worse than "Save your tears" (which i will never understand cause i expected all 3 tunes to have excellent scores...)

I wonder if they'll make any push to get this into the number one spot on the Hot 100. I can see a discount, a remix, and maybe a physical CD release getting this there, given how weak the charts are. I think that ship has sadly sailed. I was expecting that type of promo push a week or two after the Super Bowl to escalate the initial hype, but now it feels like a solid hit that's just going to hang out in the Top 10 for a while rather than the smash everyone is talking about. Too many hyped up newer releases stand between this and the Hot 100 #1 at this point.

Peaches, Montero, LTDO, Astronaut, and Olivia are all out right now. 4 is most likely its peak. But radio is keeping it alive

The threshold to hit #1 on pop radio feels way too high these days. Why is it so hard and such a long reach to hit #1 on this format? I mean a song like this needs to spend weeks with a +1000 bullet just to jump from 3-2-1, whereas on the other formats it wouldve already nabbed #1. It feels like the format bloats up the spins in the Top 3, and leaves everything below at a far far distance. I hope they can restructure the format where they can give more spins to more songs in the top 20.

It's bizarre because back in the early 2010's we'd see plenty of back to back #1 singles on Pop, and that was when competition was extremely heavy when pop was the biggest genre in the US. But nowadays songs will just hold #1 forever, don't even get me started on Pop keeping singles in the Top 10 way past their prime. Big hits will straight up miss the Top 10 or #1 because Pop insists that certain songs stay in the region forever. It gets really annoying. It makes a bit of sense why Pop would keep titans like Circles or Blinding Lights, especially with their reception still being pretty good on all formats at the time of their peaks. But for instance they kept stuff like Love Lies and Eastside in the Top 10 forever, why? They were dead on streaming by then and they weren't huge hits on the Hot 100 (both peaked at #9) but Pop still played them for months past their peaks instead of giving attention to other tracks in the Top 20.

Yea I don’t get that either, but the only reason I can think of for pop radio hanging on to some songs for a while is because the format wants to have an identity outside of the songs that are big in streaming or are smashing on multiple formats. Just like how Urban takes most Megan/DaBaby songs into the top 10, despite them not being the biggest in streaming. Or like how Hot AC takes every Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift song into the top 10 despite them being weak on other formats. That’s essentially the current sound and what PD’s feel represent the identity of the format the best. That’s why a song like “Break My Heart” would go to #1 on pop but nowhere else. It has the current Top 40 sound. Every format wants to have a handful of songs that are mostly only being played on that format so that results in odd balls like “East Side” hanging around forever. So with that being said, I get why some random singles hang around for a while. But my problem specifically with this format is the time it takes to get to #1 and the spins required. It’s kind of ridiculous.

It's what happens when pop radio's power is only concentrated in the hands of a few major companies. The effects have only gotten worse as streaming has gained more popularity and radio has been losing listeners year upon year - they'll play the same few songs over and over to keep listeners' attention, to the point where tracks that may be more popular and below the top 10 just won't get there at all.
And yet, other more genre-specific formats like Country and Rhythmic are doing better in this regard - they'll play fan-favorite newcomers in addition to their cash cows, and because of that there's a lot more turnover at the top on their radio charts. I totally agree that Pop needs to restructure and expand their playlists to include many more songs nearing the top 10. It shouldn't be a "stalling point" for songs to wait until their callout scores get published or payola money comes in to push them to the next level.
Anyways, back to your regularly-scheduled discussion on Save Your Tears by The Weeknd. :)

#1 on pop! However, the spin gap between "Save Your Tears" and "You Broke Me First" isn't that big so we won't know for sure what will be #1 on the published update until tomorrow.

I don’t follow the CHR/Top 40 chart too closely but it seems like this could hit #1 next week. The next song with a bullet is really far away from this. It would be nice to see this one make it to the top.

Justice is served!
Not that he didn’t already win with Blinding Lights but In Your Eyes was definitely robbed in an era where an artist can have three active singles do well at a time. Plus, this song reaches the top over a year after the release of its parent album and in its original form. Very unusual these days but nice to see - and with a great song as well.
Edit: oh I missed Tate jumping over him. So, justice will be served next week hopefully.

I'll be surprised if this isn't #1 next week. Tate's song will probably hit a brick wall now that it's #1... especially since there were obvious shenanigans in getting it to the top this week.

That’s what I’m thinking too. It was well behind The Weeknd who leapfrogged her last week, then it suddenly surges to go to #1 the day of the final update? Lol. No way that’s authentic.

Everybody keeps talking about these obvious shenanigans but I thought payola was illegal? So how is this still happening on pop radio in the year 2021? Can anyone provide an example of how this can be legally done? Does the head marketer of the radio department on a label meet up for lunch with an Iheart radio representative on a Monday afternoon and then they decide collaboratively to send a song to #1 by the end of the week? I’ve always wondered how this works.

I think it’s strange the number of “veteran” members on here think it doesn’t exist or it rarely happens, lol.
