1 million in the U.S. or worldwide? That likely also means "shipment" and not sales as there would be no way for her to have known actual sales in a week back then.

I remember reading an old magazine saying that "PDP" was the biggest seller, but I fact checked it and "Higher Love" by Steve was the biggest seller of the hear according to Cashbox magazine.

Paula didn't specify, but speaking that Straight Up did move up the charts fast at that time before a video was released, and taking into consideration that it went platinum, I'm going to assume she meant the US.

Edit: Higher Love hasnt been certified, yet "On My Own" has been ceritied gold and was the 10th biggest seller that year.

"Straight Up" was a top 10 hit in many countries, including the UK.

Labels/teams have to apply for certs and pay for the work, so it's likely Steve's label just never did so. In fact Steve Winwood doesn't have any certified singles, so it clearly wasn't something they cared about.

I was interested in how much COVID-19 affected streaming on Spotify compared to previous years.

For that purpose i compared the biggest streaming weeks on Global/US.

The results show that US was quite more affected from it than the Global chart. In fact Global actually rose in streaming power in 2020 (except in top 100 streaming weeks) and there still is a month left. A lot of christmas songs will do big numbers.

All of this was possible because i found a script online that automatically downloaded and compiled all charts from spotifycharts.com. link

I will say I do think comparing them to last year may be a bit muddled since last year was the 25th anniversary of Mariah’s song and they pulled out the works for it. It doesn’t have that same momentum this year. Although Mariah’s upcoming special should help.

Is it really "this close," though? Sales are pretty close despite "Rockin'" being discounted. "AIWFCIY" then leads on every streaming platform I know of, and it leads in airplay. I'm not seeing where it's all that close overall.

It’s closer on Spotify than it was at this time last year, but then again both are doing bigger numbers than last year.. that’s kind of where it ends. We’ll see if it holds as a trend for the rest of this season / a year from now
