^And tbh, bigger than "cardigan" and probably "willow". Yeah, I think definitely. "You Need To Calm Down" hit top 10 on pop radio (spent 6 weeks at #9), top 3 Hot AC, top 2 on the Hot 100, and was still top 200 on Spotify U.S. in mid January 2020 after being released June of 2019. "Delicate" was a monster on radio, but I don't remember it even having that kind of longevity with streaming (could be misremembering tho). "You Need To Calm Down" was definitely a bonafide hit and probably as big as a single from Taylor is going to get these days. I think it would have performed even better had it lead Lover instead of that truly awful "Me!" lol

^I'm beating a dead horse at this point but "Cruel Summer" instead of "ME!" with the same exact release date, followed by YNTCD and "Lover" as they were released would have been so much better. (Then literally anything else that isn't "The Man" fourth).
CS was never going to beat "Old Town Road" either, but "ME!" is ridiculed even on her fanbase.

I swear I will never get over Taylor snubbing Cruel Summer. I'm gonna wake up in a cold sweat 10 years from now with that bridge screaming in my head.

I legitimately remember listening to Lover for the first time, hearing "Cruel Summer" and thinking, ok, like legitimately what the f**k are they doing....lol. Eta: "I Think He Knows" would have been a solid choice instead of "The Man" imo.

I think Cruel Summer would’ve had a shot at #1, if not in it’s first week, then later down the road when it got more radio support. It could’ve been huge

Really miss her having radio hits. Gave Lover (album) a spin the other day and feel like she had some real hits left on the table with Cruel Summer (obviously), Afterglow, and Cornelia Street. I wonder if pop radio has moved past giving her #1 hits (even top 10 hits) or if she could still score a few more if she releases radio friendly songs.

I mean.....cardigan and Willow aren’t normal top 10 pop songs. I think if Taylor releases some normal radio hit material radio will be happy to play it. I don’t think it needs to be overthought honestly.

I think she will be fine if she goes back to more radio friendly songs. These two albums were not made with radio as a priority. And with Lover they botched a big part of the campaign. ME! peaked high on radio but a better track would have probably done better (and set up the follow ups better too). Prior to that you'd have to go back to Speak Now to find an album that yielded no #1 hits on radio.

I get why her folklore/evermore singles weren’t big hits on radio, because they weren’t really made for radio. I was just looking at the lack of radio interest from her lover era and add on top of that her wanting to lean into the folklore/evermore sound which means it’s been since Delicate since radio has really fully embraced one of her singles.

This is turning into a bonafide AC smash. Happy to see that as AC more or less has just been "the calmest and biggest pop hits in the past 12 months, but several months late." Glad to see this buck that system.

Glad to see this buck that system. Yeah, I was worried AC would overlook Willow due to the lackluster Pop performance. I think it's quite well suited to AC audiences. Has there ever been an AC to Pop crossover hit? And although Willow isn't very trend chasing, it's still a pretty catchy song that has a beat that's rather reggaeton-like.

Does audience gain have an impact on future spins? Like, if the audience gain is super low but it gains a lot of spins, does that mean that the spins are going to slow soon?

Technically most huge Pop songs are Pop to AC crossovers. "I Don't Care", for example, smashed on AC months after Pop was done with it. As for strictly hits only on AC, most current Xmas songs every year smash on AC, with only some like the Jonas Brothers one or the new "Oh Santa" popping up on the CHR Top 50.

Well sometimes it's not a good sign. I'm not saying this is happening here. It can mean smaller stations are playing it more but the larger one's aren't upping it's spins or they are decreasing them some. Usually smaller stations follow bigger one's so if that was the case here. Possibly this could start losing spins soon. I haven't looked into what stations are playing this so I don't know if that's the case here.
