Traditionally, remixes exist to give a song a wider audience. In this case, thatβs what willowβs first remix was. The other two seem more fan-bait to me, which I think goes against the good nature of charts - but then again, so have nearly all remixes in the last decade. But, I also prefer remixes to any other type of βallowable chart manipulationβ because it gives something new to a song weβre already familiar with.

Again, Billboard for years allowed deeply discounted physical singles, for instance, so why in the world would it do anything about acts releasing multiple versions/remixes during a single's first week (or second, third, etc.)?

Yet J Lo literally recorded a new song - twice, and it counted as the same lmao. I know a rule was implemented after that but it is funny how inconsistent they can be. I know artists and labels donβt make it easy either. iirc J Lo's shenanigans was basically the reason for the rule change Billboard will always be a year or two behind the latest tactics Yes, you guys are referring to I'm Real and Ain't It Funny, but that was a while ago, 2001, so I think it's less a matter of inconsistency than that's how things were back then because they might not have felt a need to implement such a rule because remixes doing well enough to challenge the original wasn't as common, but then they saw an issue that came up, and they changed the rule. I'm also not sure if it was a "tactic" on J. Lo's part with the sole purpose of boosting chart position. Weren't the originals already becoming big before the remixes?

^I don't even recall either album version ("I'm Real" or 'Ain't It Funny") getting pushed/played much prior to the release of the new songs with the same titles.

^^^Yeah. They should revise their pricing rules to account for inflation. A lot of the #1 debuts this year managed to get good sales by being discounted that first week.

Well if they weren't pushed/played at all, that would support my point even more, because they wouldn't have gotten a chance to have "failed" yet and necessitated a need for a remix boost.

Does anyone know how these "willow" remixes count in terms of the album? As in, do they contribute to points for the album as well?

I donβt see any harm with these remixes. I also donβt see the difference between this and all of the chart tricks from the 90s, 00s and 10s etc. Also they tend to usually not make much of a difference at all when all is said and done? I think the only thing I canβt stand behind is payola. Well these sales tactics are way more impactful than every other tactic used before.
I would say before this the biggest chart tactic was mid 00s when they released songs to radio only, and when the song started peaking on radio labels released it on digital download retailers. And the song would jump from 30s/40s to top5/#1.
They just synced the biggest sales week (#1) & biggest radio week (nth week) for maximum points. Quite a few songs if they were released "normally" (on DSPs week 1) wouldn't have gone #1, there are some that wouldn't even be top 5 hits.
But this sales tactic has bigger impact. Lets say other tactics could give you 10-15% of the points, this one is way more.
The rule in place says you can purchase 4 copies per version per credit card. So if you have 4 versions, you can get 16 sales from 1 person. ofc this is the extreme case.
So lets point out a real example:
Chart week 09/26: There were ~66k website sales, which came from 6.1k orders. Around 11 copies per order. The same week on Itunes the song had ~12k sales.
The song ended #2, this was an extreme case. It has never been this high ever again. BTS fans were trying to push the song so it can remain top 2. They succeeded. Under normal rules and all the song would have been way out of top 10 that week, but instead it was #2.
That week 42.5% of the points came thanks to "rules abuse". Sorry but you won't be able to find this in any other decade, no matter how hard you try.
The previous week 09/19: There were ~8.7 copies per order. It isn't surprising knowing like other have pointed out there were 15 versions combined through different weeks.
I will repeat again more than half of these #1 wouldn't happen if the formula was "normal". aka it didn't value sales that much. I already posted this 2 weeks ago link . (reply #397 if it didn't copy correctly, can't quote because locked thread).
Another thing that need to be pointed out is "THE INTERNET" and social media. You didn't know weather Song A was aiming for #1/#5/#10, you could only speculate. Nowadays you have countless sources that give you real time data about the song performance. So people know weather the song is 25 points or 5 points behind #1. That is why pushes like this are 5 to 10 times more common than they were in any other era. And that is why it is tireing to see stuff like this (it happends way too often).
Bonus (for the internet): idk if you are aware to the dedication of fanbases nowadays. There are so called "funding accounts", fans from outside of the US send money so fans from inside of the USA can purchase 10+ copies so the song/album will chart higher. During the past few weeks there were funding accounts with like 20/30k $. This was not possible before social media. And it is not 1 fanbase, i have seen this from so many fanbase, although some are more organized than others. I won't go into for what better purposes the thousands upon thousands of $ could have been used, that is another discussion.
Regarding: Don't blame the players, blame the game:
Cardigan is as legitimate #1 as TROLLZ, and TROLLZ is as legitimate #1 as The Box. And willow will be as legitimate as them aswell, if it hits #1.
Simply based on the rules during those weeks, those were the songs that accumulated the most points. No matter how bad the rules were.
Even Billboard when they changed the rules, they called out 6ix9ine/Nicki & Justin/Ariana for abusing the rules, admitting how legit those #1s were and that their rules weren't perfect.
P.S. i replied because i see this often here "rules have been abused since the begining" - true, but never in this magnitude, and never had this much impact on the charts. That is upsetting to some chart watchers. It happens way way more often coz of social media and the sales tactic is the easiest to game, compared to previous ones.
The biggest/worst chart manipulation to date i would say is when that artist said he wouldn't perform at a concert if he didn't have the #1 album in the country. Can older chart watchers help me with the name i forgot it. lol

For RIAA. No. Unless they get added to a deluxe edition or sth.
Example: Bad Guy Remix with Bieber increased the sales of WWAFAWDWG, can't find the article rn. But it was specifically stated.

Even in terms of chart manipulation, Taylor have three remixes is nowhere the worst of this year, nor the worst Taylor has done.
willow being number one is way more deserving than Say So, Stuck with U, TROLLZ, Franchise, Savage Love, and Life Goes On. Regardless of the fallout next week, she had the biggest song this week: number one on streaming and sales, with a music video that has 28M as of writing, and is already in the top 100 on radio thanks to streaming.

Also can someone tell me how All Time Low might finally get a hit song freaking 18 years into their career?!?
I thought Monsters debuting in the Bubbling Under was just a fluke thanks to a sales gimmick they did that I didn't know about but it also just debuted on the Pop Charts at #35 and has radio at #91? That's crazy a band this old might actually get a hit

^I don't even recall either album version ("I'm Real" or 'Ain't It Funny") getting pushed/played much prior to the release of the new songs with the same titles. The original version of βIβm Realβ peaked as high as #15 on Pop radio before being combined with the βMurder remixβ which eventually pushed it to #1. The remix was played on Urban and Rhythmic radio from the very beginning however with Ja Rule only being credited on those two formats. βIβm Realβ topped the Hot 100 with 129.5M AI that week and 85% of its audience stemmed from the remix. (So, 110M+ AI stemmed from the remix across Rhythmic and Urban radio mostly, as well as Pop radio, whereas 19M+ AI solely stemmed from the original which Pop radio was also still playing alongside the remix). βAinβt It Funnyβ was a different case, and rightfully controversial, because the original version wasnβt even released in the U.S.A as a single; it was instead released as an international single in the summer of 2001. Then in January 2002, Sony decided to release the βAinβt It Funny (Murder Remix)β along with now sending the original to Pop radio also to garner more spins. This time, though, it didnβt work and even Billboard called both Lopez and Sony out for the pathetic tactic. π

I wish Drake or any other artist could get streaming monsters #1s next year to help to stop frauds #1s but since they removed UG streams it has become harder. WAP was a streaming monster and it was robbed from several weeks at #1 by Dynamite, Savage Love and FRANCHISE. WAP was not robbed by Savage Love. The problem with WAP was that it was way too dependent on one metric (and that obviously was streaming), and it hurt its longevity. WAP was already on the decline on all metrics (yes, even streaming) that week when Savage Love was #1. Even Mood was catching up to WAP at that point (it would take #1 the following week). Not to mention, Savage Love beat WAP that week in both sales and radio by a wide margin. So, if WAP was #1 that week, then streaming is too heavily weighted. Savage Love was deserving to be #1 that week. I understand there is a problem with the current weighing. However, the solution is to not add back the UG streams, but rather to de-weight sales, and we can start by removing website sales.

We don't yet know that the song is #1 in streaming for the week. Some predictions had it behind "AIWFCIY."

You forgot about Savage as well. Although the biggest one has been Dynamite. It has seven remixes that have charted in iTunes, although the CD comes with three additional remixes.

Savage Remix had several weeks in the top 5, how is that not a deserving #1 single?

^yeah Savage would've gotten 4 weeks on top if it hadn't been for Rain On Me, Say So, and Stuck with U. I'd say even if it didn't feel like one, it was a deserving number one

In the defence of Say So and Savage, they would've gone number one anyways without sales β just on different days.

Say So and Savage did have a chance of #1 without remixes or sales manipulation. So much fraudulent #1's in one year. Billboard needs a radical makeover in the new year.

Both cardigan & willow are in the same category as 'Watermelon Sugar' songs that would have been top 5 / top 3 even without the gimicks. But without the gimicks they wouldn't have hit #1.
ofc we have already had way too many worse performing songs hit #1.

We don't yet know that the song is #1 in streaming for the week. Some predictions had it behind "AIWFCIY." True. Alpha Data (former BuzzAngle) Fri-Mon Audio Streaming is:
In the first 3 days (Fri-Sun) willow was #1. Amazon Music must be pulling insane numbers.

"4 copies per version per credit card" I don't think the "per credit card" is real. it's just panic rumor from fans unless billboard added extra rules. it obviously didn't affect initial mass buying from say so or trollz, also BTS's $40k fund account as they were buying with 1 card or 1 paypal etc. they only cared about "max 4 sales per 1 order" rule.

I find it funny how the tone of these threads recently has been, "OMG, Christmas songs are ruining the charts, let's find out what's really popular at the moment" and now it's "OMG new songs by popular artists are ruining the charts, we need Christmas songs to stay at #1." It seems no one is ever happy with the Hot 100.

It's performing well worldwide. It's a HIT in Norway. It was #171 (+10) yesterday on Spotify Worlwide Global. The song has 144 millions streams without its performer once evoking it publicly and with an old holiday music compilation cover as official artwork during more than 10 years ... Iβd give anything for her to re-record and do a video. A video would be great. The song has a strong potential. It can even be a hit in the United States without much effort: Tik Tok challenge, sync licensing with Hallmark Channel for their holidays movies, discounted price on Itunes during one week or ask Disney Channel tv stars to sing it on their Instragam stories. Instead there is a My Only Wish (This Year) Limited LP on Urban Outfitters with an old picture outtakes as a brand new cover...
