Delighted to see Lil Nas X holding up surprisingly well with "HOLIDAY". I hope the festive title doesn't stop its momentum post-Christmas. It remained stable today on spotify

When was the last time the Spotify daily chart number one was below 1m and below 900k? WOW. This can't be real. 822,685 for #1 on Spotify US.

I'm guessing it's a slow transition as people replace their Christmas playlists with regular ones. I wonder if the streams are just super spread out and that's why the #1 is so low.
The UK numbers are low too.

The UK numbers are low too.Just compiled it and yup, they are low. 6th lowest since the start of spotifycharts (2017).
The interesting thing about UK Spotify is that 1-Jan is the lowest day in 2017, 2018, and in 2019 -3rd lowest, in 2020 - 7th lowest. It is not like that in the US.
People are probably so hungover from New Years Eve.

Just counted, there are 44 Christmas songs charting today - nearly twice as many as there were a year ago on 12/26 (23).
Ironically, the top 200 cutoff is actually slightly higher than it was on this day last year (219K in 2020 vs 218K in 2019), so maybe this is the result of gradual playlist transitioning.

Brazil and Mexico's #1s are all 900k+ (in Mexico 1M+), the US is getting outpaced fast I’m wondering if this is an indication of US gp switching to other streaming platforms. I understand the whole influence of the pandemic but those streams seem a bit too low especially when other countries are also going through a pandemic but still manages to keep up their streams.

Wow. So what I thought could eventually, the #1 in US Spotify with less than 1 million streams has actually happened. I didn't expect to be happen so soon, with a holiday song at #1. And Whole Lotta Red songs lived up to their parent album's name.

Meanwhile on Apple Music, there are no Carti songs in the top 10. 8 of those slots are taken by Lil Durk’s album bomb (led by the late King Von collab “Still Trappin’”), with the other 2 being On Me and the new SZA song.

I love the whiplash of having 5 or 6 songs break the all time streaming record on one day and then the next day the discussion is "spotify is ded lol".
Other than Jan 1st, Dec 26 is like national hungover day. And people who do mostly passive listening have to transition from the Xmas playlist to the usual stuff.

People are also listening to music way more broadly. The #200 got 219k streams which is actually more than #200 got in July.

Spotify is just experiencing Christmas fatigue. Don’t assume the worst just yet.

Spotify has probably already peaked in US unless they do some big bundle deal like the Hulu bundle.

The streams of the #200 song are pretty much always a better indicator of overall Spotify use than the streams of the #1 song, which is really just measuring the dominance of a single hit.

It'd be interesting to see how the pandemic further affects the charts in the coming weeks, with the Christmas and New Years surge, I wouldn't be shocked if people have no time to listen to music while they are fighting for their lives (or can't pay for Spotify because unemployment ran out and no stimulus).

I wouldn't be surprised if the opposite was true. Didn't the music industry do great during the Recession? People will wanr escapism from all the shit in their lives.

I am actually kind of surprised it happened that way last year It makes sense that there is a little bit of a lag People start listening to Xmas music starting Nov. 1, but they wouldn't on Dec. 26? Xmas on Friday so for many it's more of a holiday weekend rather than people returning to the office the next day (in a normal year). Doubtful any Xmas songs will remain in Top 25, so it'll be interesting if Billboard charts the 'true' Top 25 or excludes some with the inconsistent and arbitrary recurrent rules.

It's kind of sad that spotifycharts doesn't keep the top 200 from April 2015 to now, they used to have it go back that far, but now it only goes to 1/1/17

I am actually kind of surprised it happened that way last year It makes sense that there is a little bit of a lag People are normally visiting friends and family or out shopping on Boxing Day. Or maybe a movie. Which means far less time for music listening on the 26th. Except this year when half the country can't go do any of those things. So music gets played at hone to fill the time.

It also showed demographics of songs too, you could see ratio of listeners by age and gender. Also there was an album chart at one point, that was top 100 for EVERY country. It was weekly/daily/monthly I think. Spotify user since Spring 2012 lol.

I don’t think this is a COVID thing. Family celebrations don’t necessarily shut off completely on December 25th. Many may still be in the mood. Which is why some may still play Christmas music on the 26th.
Extended vacations. School breaks. Not a COVID specific thing

It could partly be due to the fact that the day after Christmas fell on a Saturday this year. A lot of people normally go back to work the day after Christmas, but since that day is on a weekend this year, the celebrations can extend itself a little bit.

Not a COVID specific thing Then Christmas music should have been a lot stronger in 2018/19 on the 26th than it was. it might not be 100% COVID as the reason, but it most certainly based on the evidence is the most dominant. maybe people who aren't locked down, Have businesses/entertainment closed etc, just don't get it.
