This is blasphemy haha. This comment is super ironic in hindsight, given the recent reports of this song being a diss on Sabrina lol. There is nothing in this song that actually “disses” Sabrina though. On the contrary, it’s actually really respectful to the “blond girl” and the guy. If anything, the song is about Olivia being heartbroken that she doesn’t have him anymore. You're right, I chose my words poorly. I haven't listened to the song yet, so I was just going off the reading the lyrics to the verse in question. I was just being silly about the blasphemy part, and even though I'm a big Sabrina fan, I think it's totally valid for Olivia to have those feelings if the rumors in question are true. Sorry if I came off sounding otherwise.

I’m actually super happy Olivia didn’t write it as a kiss-off, because I like Sabrina too and wouldn’t like unnecessary shade. I like that Olivia didn’t drag her ex either, just put it out there that she’s hurting and she thought he was the 1. Maybe that’s why I love it so much. Sometimes a good man hurts you, and you know you hurt him too, and it sucks.

Yes, and even so I can't help but feeling this is all a little bit scam-ish, like BTS and sales... I mean, success to the girl and everything, but I wouldn't be surprised if an article popped up in the next few days saying it was all some kind of bot-induced numbers or something. It's just all too much for someone no one really knows, except for a very targeted group of teens. Not even Dua Lipa, argueably the biggest pop act internationally today, can even dream of numbers that could come even close... I think it's more a testament to how music is discovered/consumed today. She had a launchpad (her Disney base), a great song with a celebrity gossip backstory, a viral TikTok, and has been lauded by multiple A-listers. It's certainly an unprecedented perfect storm of PR/marketing, but it all comes back to the quality of the song which is clearly connecting. The best label in the world couldn't manufacture this type of success even if they tried. Yeah, you're right. I guess it's just a huge statement to how much power Disney girls can still have when all stars align correctly in the universe, I guess it's just unusual because we're so used to Disney girls trying to break out in the mainstream and doing nothing at all. When was the last time it actually happened?

Cute song. Def Lorde-lite, but I have to support my fellow half-Flip.

I guess it's just a huge statement to how much power Disney girls can still have when all stars align correctly in the universe, I guess it's just unusual because we're so used to Disney girls trying to break out in the mainstream and doing nothing at all. When was the last time it actually happened? Seriously, like I posted earlier, a huge debut single out of the gate is literally unheard of for a Disney or Nickelodeon star. Hilary Duff Depending on how you look at it, her debut was either I Can't Wait, Why Not, Santa Claus Lane, or So Yesterday. The first three? Flops. SY? A slow climb to a decent peak, but certainly nothing flashy. Aly & AJ Again, a weird one here. Do You Believe in Magic didn't do much, but an argument could be made for Rush being their debut and it... didn't do much better. Vanessa Hudgens Come Back to Me did alright, but it wasn't quick and it certainly wasn't a big hit like this is shaping to be. Ashley Tisdale Be Good to Me just outright flopped sadly. Raven-Symoné If we want to count her since technically her music career predates her Disney career, then Backflip is the debut and it did basically nothing. Miley Cyrus Like Hilary, another weird one. Her debut could arguably be any of I Miss You, G.N.O. (Girl's Night Out), or See You Again (so long as we ignore all Hannah Montana material). The first two did play in their niches and See You Again wound up to be a significant hit, but it was a very slow ascent for SYA. Selena Gomez Tell Me Something I Don't Know flopped (rightfully, it's so damn childish lol). But Naturally, her first radio single, did eventually do decently, but again, nothing quick. Demi Lovato I honestly don't remember which of her pop/rock singles came first, but I do know all of them were flops since her first real hit wasn't until her third album. And that's probably the closest scenario here, actually. Skyscraper was a digital hit right out of the gate like this is, but even then, it's not her debut nor did it do much outside of that initial release. (This looks to become a true, massive, long lasting hit.) Ariana Grande The Way is also fairly close to this. It did some decent damage upon release, but nothing like this. I mean, this girl just shattered a record previously held by Ariana. Imagine The Way doing that to, like, Katy Perry or Lady Gaga at the time. It would be astoundingly bizarre. The Way is easily the biggest debut from any of these people until this track. Miranda Cosgrove Kissin U did decently, but certainly not out of the gate. (Also just kind of funny to straight up compare these two as the show this girl is from, Bizaardvark, is basically a rehash of iCarly.) And who do we even have outside of the aforementioned? Sabrina Carpenter? Sofia Carson? MAX? Bridgit Mendler? Bella Thorne? Zendaya? Emily Osment? Jennette McCurdy? Big Time Rush? The Naked Brothers Band? Keke Palmer? Several others whose music careers I'm just straight up forgetting? All names that have had mild to very little success with their music careers. (Props to Zendaya for becoming such a force in acting, though! And Bella for such a force in doing the most.) So yeah, this is immensely unprecedented to see this not only excelling out of the gate, but downright smashing out of the gate. Legitimately a contender to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 with her very first single. Insane.

Children and teens have much more impact on the charts these days thanks to streaming, and children tend to enjoy replaying the same shit over and over again. This has never been the case before, as streaming was a very small portion or not a factor at all, and at-home music consumption required purchase. At least this is my hunch. We saw a similar scenario play out with "Old Town Road," the song that shattered all kinds of records and is now the highest certified song in RIAA history.

The closest analogy to this is definitely “The Way”. If streaming had been such a big factor in the Hot 100 and our lives then as it is now, it undoubtedly would also have debuted at #1 like this is going to do. And hey “Yours Truly” did debut at #1 at least.

11 million on global Spotify, just crazy, this smash came out of nowhere, and she's not even 18 yo, just wow, and I agree, she also reminds me a bit of Lorde, I wonder if she will have longevity.

I get your comparisons more now, but it still doesn't strike me as "another A Thousand Years/Say Something." In the first example, they're both using scales—pretty common in ballads. Even then, the number of notes they hit are different. And Olivia's piano beat is much different than what "Say Something" has going on, but I guess if u strip the chords away from the latter, they do play one note each? These are both similarities obviously so I'm not arguing your point but holistically she didn't remind me of those songs at all. If anything the opening instrumental reminds me of the one for The Last Great American Dynasty. But I don't really see any significant similarities to A Thousand Years or Say Something.

I've been reading YouTube comments from viewers and people are connecting to the song emotionally. Some people are saying that the song is bringing them to tears. Thats something that Adele usually does in her songs.

Thats something that Adele usually does in her songs. FWIW, I imagine that a lot of people have driven by their ex's house and felt sad and emotional. So I can understand that.

When she posted the song July of last year on her instagram, the lyric is "brunette girl" and not "blonde girl" lol Looking at her socials, she refers to Taylor Swift as her mom, and Lorde as her President. I can definitely hear them both in some parts of the song.

I don't know how credible this is but: Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” Ranks As Pop Radio’s Most Added Song
As it posts incredible numbers on digital platforms, Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license” is attracting early interest at pop radio. Picked up by 65 Mediabase-monitored pop stations this week, “drivers license” convincingly ranks as the format’s most added song. Inherently impressive for a debut single, the add count is particularly noteworthy given that “drivers license” does not even officially impact until next week. Radio programmers, like so many fans around the world, are simply unwilling to contain their enthusiasm. Justin Bieber’s “Anyone” takes second place on this week’s Mediabase add board. The single received playlist pickups from 52 new stations. An impact week add count of 34 slots Saweetie’s “Best Friend (featuring Doja Cat)” in third place. Zara Larsson’s “Talk About Love (featuring Young Thug)” grabs fourth with 30 impact week adds. A new playlist addition for 21 pop stations, Megan Thee Stallion’s “Body” lands in fifth place on the add board. This week’s other notable pop radio options: LOONA’s “Star” (6th-most, tie), Pop Smoke’s “What You Know Bout Love” (6th-most, tie), Ed Sheeran’s “Afterglow” (8th-most), Black Eyed Peas & Shakira’s “Girl Like Me” (9th-most, tie), and The Kid LAROI’s “Without You” (9th-most, tie). headlineplanet.com/home/2021/01/12/olivia-rodrigos-drivers-license-ranks-as-pop-radios-most-added-song/

Dunno if I’ll ever hear this girl’s name again after this, but this is cute. It’s definitely got that crazy irrational sweet young love vibe, and it’s communicated very well lyrically. Not the best I’ve ever heard, but it’s not undeserving of the success it’s getting I’d say.

This is actually pretty good- was not expecting this from someone out of High School Musical. I can see the comparisons to the aforementioned acts, too.
The streaming numbers are pretty crazy, gaining daily- will the gains continue?

The sales and streaming #s are amazing! You would expect that from a lead Adele single not from Olivia Rodrigo.

She breaks her own record. Phenomenal. Not even her own record, but everyone's record! Girl just outdid Drake. Drake. Who has the record for biggest single day on Spotify in the US? A woman. (And worldwide too since Mariah Carey holds it.) I don't think a woman has held that title since Adele's "Hello." And that was back when the platform was still rapidly increasing in popularity that virtually ever A-lister was breaking that record left and right. This is someone who's never had a hit before in the middle of not only the platform plateauing but a pandemic where streams are already down. I'm still in utter shock seeing this become a beast of a smash hit immediately upon release and shattering records left and right. I haven't been this enthralled in a song's numbers since... Well, "Hello."

This is actually pretty good- was not expecting this from someone out of High School Musical. Just want to clarify that she's not from the original High School Musical movies. She's only 17. She would have been 4 at the time of the third film. (Side note: holy shit time flies.) What she's from is actually a streaming series on Disney+ called High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (yes, really) which is a show about a group of high schoolers planning to do a musical based on the popular film. It's very meta for Disney lol. She's also one of the two co-stars on the Disney Channel's Bizaardvark which is basically the same premise as Nickelodeon's decade older show iCarly, just with the difference being the two girls are on YouTube or something instead of having their own website. No one from the original film series saw this success with their music careers. Though Zac Efron did go on to become an A-list actor. Vanessa Hudgens appears in several Netflix Christmas movies for some reason. Ashley Tisdale produced a pretty successful show on ABC Family/Freeform for a while. But none of them got this level of success from their music, much to the expectations you had haha.
