brb gonna take your list to the dumpster full disclosure - “champagne problems” is my #1, I just think it unfairly overshadows a lot of songs I really WANT to like “tolerate it”, but the tempo is just...confusing? I can’t groove to it because of the time signature or pacing or something. if someone who knows more about music could explain that would be great. It’s one of my faves lyrically, though.

So Tolerate It is actually in 10/8 or 5/4 which isn’t the typical 4/4 time signature as most songs (closure has the same time signature). I’d argue the arrangement does make Tolerate It feel less natural than it does on closure, but I like the tension and dissonance in the song paired with the lyrics. It’s like she could never catch up with her lover and although the song is beautiful, it feels off because the relationship is off. I love it so much.

It’s like she could never catch up with her lover and although the song is beautiful, it feels off because the relationship is off. I love it so much. She does things like this quite often too. Just as she is a genius with her album rollouts, she is a genius with her production choices. The production of "The Archer" for example never goes anywhere. We wait and wait as the song builds and builds for a climax that never comes, because it's like the feeling of anxiety--that build-up in our heads of a danger or adversity that never comes, and in some episodes never existed. Coupled with the lyrics, that's why "The Archer" is my #2 on Lover (behind only SYGB, which hits close to home because long story short I feel Taylor's fear and sadness and pain in that song on a very firsthand and personal level). Over the past year, it's become one of my favorite songs of all time if I'm being quite frank. The production on "tolerate it" is beautiful and I echo everything you've said; and the lyricism has Shakespeare shook. I made you my temple, my mural, my sky/But now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life. Like excuse me?! I don't recall asking to be stabbed in the heart?!

taylor I mean, I like “willow”....it’s just nowhere near the highs we got with folklore, imo. Songs like “champagne problems”, “gold rush” and “evermore” bring the melodrama that Swift does so well, and “willow” is just fine in comparison. I’m a sad bitch and like sad songs the best. I love the guitar riffs that play during the “life was a willow” segments and really like the hook, but I think people are biased in its favor because it’s the single.

I’m also going to admit I think Taylor hasn’t been the most specific on production until her venture into pop. I’d say this love was the first for me where I noticed how good the production can tie into her words and feelings. Since then it’s been so fun to hear the lyrics then hear the sound and wonder why she chose to make that sound the way it does!

Since then it’s been so fun to hear the lyrics then hear the sound and wonder why she chose to make that sound the way it does! That's an excellent point. "This Love" is phenomenal. It remains one of her most special songs from her three pop albums and I think the connection between the lyrics and the production does have something to do with it.

It for sure does! It feels like you’re at the shore and the ocean flows in and out of your feet. I think because of how restrictive country can be for production, her venture into other genres allowed her to experiment with sound and its relation to her amazing songwriting and I’m so thankful for that. Folklore and Evermore has a lot of this!

Folklore and Evermore has a lot of this! It's funny because This Love is the only song on 1989 that was produced by the guy who produced most of her previous albums (Nathan Chapman) but it still stands out from the rest of her work with him. Production wise, I really like State of Grace and Red too though. Also even though This Love is one of my favorite songs from Taylor at this point, I still prefer You Are In Love slightly more.

It was a bit harder to rank the two bonus tracks as I've had less time with those than the rest of the album but they fit in there. I also found it hard to rank no body no crime because it doesn't fit with the rest of the album as much to me.
I feel like the album is overall better than I initially gave credit for when it came time to actually rank the songs. There were two clear bottom ranks for me, no argument, and I'll refer to these as bottom tier. The next tier was also relatively easy because they're songs I think are good but haven't clicked beyond my ability to acknowledge they have good qualities. Then there's the remainder, which I could also split into upper tier (maybe my top 5) and the clear next-tier choices.
I bet my #1 (and probably #2) will be out in the first half, and probably before the top 10. I'm okay with that. They're both songs I've claimed as my own.

I just submitted my list. Initially I had like 8 songs tied for #2, but I realized the problem I was thinking about it too much. Instead I decided to just do the ranking quickly and go with my gut feeling, and then I made a few adjustments after writing a quick list. Rose "Payola" Nylund I also have a clear bottom two that I don't think are bad but do think easily rank below the others. I also agree that NBNC is a little tough to rank because it sounds like it should be on a different album.

got my list in yesterday and I'm sure my ranks will not be the most popular for some songs, especially after reading the comments in this thread but I really didn't dislike anything. I also never got around to listen to Folklore, which I suppose I need to change soon lol.
Without revealing my #1 I do want to say I'm a bit obsessed with that song and I think it might be the first Taylor Swift song to grow on me to the extent it has so far, as I've never been a fan. Interested to see how it does when we get to the results!

Honestly relistening didn't change my opinion, I do unfortunately think this is her weakest album. Shame because I loved folklore but I only love 4/17 tracks here :/

I really like my #1 and hope it makes the top 5, but other than that I don't have a strong preference, the other songs are all pretty good.

As long as “Closure” is at #17, I’ll be fine with literally any order.
