Janet's first hit ballad became her fourth song to top the soul chart, and fifth straight Top 10 hit on the Hot 100. It was generally praised by critics for its timely message during the AIDS pandemic, encouraging people to abstain from sex until the time is right. The music video co-stars Taimak, who was in the movie The Last Dragon.

Some say the song is similar to the America song "Daisy Jane". The matter was later settled out of court before any lawsuits could be filed.

Her first charted single after leaving Shalamar was one of the biggest hits of 1987, reaching the Top 5 of the Hot 100 and helping Jody win the Grammy for Best New Artist. It also introduced the phrase "Hasta la vista, baby", which would later be said by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1991 blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

A re-recorded version was released in 2005 and topped the dance chart.
