The fact Landslide beat Top of the World makes this rankdown null and void. Do-over.

Wow perfect! My top 3 is the top 3 of this RD as well! I don't remember when was the last time this happened, or if it ever happened to me...

The fact Landslide beat Top of the World makes this rankdown null and void. Do-over. I was kinda hoping for the same result myself. "Top of the World" is a song that hits really close to home for me and I just as easily could've ranked it as my #1 right along with the five of you who did. I've mentioned this before in other threads, but my father committed suicide when I was only seven and it should go without saying that it had a profound impact on the rest of my life. Not just mine of course, but for all of those around me including my mom who was just never the same after that. Anyways, this is the kind of song that sends chills down my spine whenever I hear it and it always stops me in my tracks. I have to think that my father is looking down with regret wishing he had made a different decision that hot summer night in June 1990.

As much as I would've liked to see "Wedding" in the top 3 for personal preference reasons, I knew full well this would be the top 3, and honestly the trio of smashes from this album are all incredible and I would be happy with any of these winning.

Stats for #3:
Despite accumulating an impressive 21 top 5 rankings, our next song was actually never a #1 contender! In fact, it wasn't ever even a top 2 contender so that should give you an idea of just how strong the two remaining songs are. Four participants lose a #1 while our only participant with a last-place ranking finally bids adieu to theirs.

Leaving next is โLandslideโ which I think many would consider being one of the signature hits not just from this album but of their career. Maybe because of all that airplay over the years is what made this our sixth most polarizing song, but even so this garnered an impressive 21 top 5 rankings from the group (we only had 28 after all!) of which wrip, Kris Kringle, schnetzka, and lady๐fan all depart with their #1 song before the top 2. The other handful still put this somewhere within' their top 8 with only two participants sliding this into their bottom 4. Included in that bottom 4 though is actually a last place ranking from recordyear.

I used to prefer "Long Time Gone" as my favorite single from this album, but ever since I chose to have "Landslide" played at my father's funeral, it's been extra special for me in ways it didn't use to be and slowly over time I've liked it more and more. I had a tough time between putting this or LTG as my #2 behind "Wedding," but ultimately this song is just too poignant that I had to slot it in there.
Rooting for LTG but I feel like "Soldier" will win.

Separated by a mere six points, "Long Time Gone" ended up prevailing in the end despite only being a top contender a few times over the course of the rankdown. On the other hand, "Travelin' Soldier" was our most consistent top-performing song as it remained locked into #1 for the majority of its run. Neither song dropped outside of the top 3 which is in large part to all of the participants placing both songs somewhere within their top 8. That in turn makes both our least polarizing songs of the rankdown!
Thanks again to all of the participants and to everyone that followed along! Look for the next album in the series to be launching soon!

Yassssss!!! Fuck yassssss!!!
"Soldier" is a gorgeous story... but as a song, it's never been something that I feel compelled to revisit a ton because it's just something you have to be in a specific mood to listen to imo. OTOH, "Long Time Gone" is just a straight BOP and never gets old. Very happy about this outcome.

It's been a while since I listened to this in its entirety, so it was nice to revisit it for the RD. Still as fun as it was nearly 20 years ago. Thanks for hosting, tim. Attachment Deleted

The reasonably correct top 2. While neither were my number one, no one can argue these are the best from the album. Travelin soldier performed live is one of those rare moments of musical perfection that few artists Iโve seen live can capture. And long time gone is just a really good song and they did such a good job with it. Too bad their take on this statement of country music didnโt support them back.
And I commented against landslide a lot in this rankdown lol. I donโt dislike it by any means. Itโs the best version of the song Iโve heard - but being the big pop hit makes it seem less important when compared to some of their greats - many of which are on this album. Landslide is a very pleasant song, but compared to travelin soldier and top of the world, those are the two that never fail to make me feel the music.

I'm glad "Landslide" made it to #3 but wasn't in the top 2. As much as I do enjoy their version, Natalie's vocals do not compare to Stevie Nicks at all. I struggled with whether to put "Long Time Gone" or "Travelin' Soldier" at #1 because they are so close for me. Super happy with these results! Thanks for hosting tim!

โTravelinโ Soldierโ is overrated, so Iโm glad it didnโt win. I still love โLong Time Gone.โ

I was quite shocked at the theme of Top of the World. Like I know it's a song about suicide, but the imagery of a person only reached a higher position when he is hung uop is just...wow. I also like the intertwining violins near the end of the song.
Their version of Landslide is so overrated, especially since the major appeal of Fleetwood Mac is vocals.
Travelinโ Soldier should have won this. One of the most devastating songs in country music and I love the storytelling here.
At least Darrell Scott won this as a songwriter (and very likely win the Mountain Soul rankdown). It's a good protest song and opening track to this mostly bluegrass album.
Taking The Long Way is an interesting album to rank.

Thanks tim for hosting. Long Time Gone is a song one can turn up loud and blast and sing away! Very glad to see it win here. Great rankdown. As always, appreciate your bits of knowledge of the songs/songwriters etc. Thanks again!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I'm at the bottom of the closeness rankings. No shocker there.
Since I've never listened to Country radio, I didn't have the same nostalgia of repeated exposure for the singles, which is why they all ranked in the middle for me. If you were to have me listen to this album not knowing what any of the singles were, I would not put them near the top, because the melancholy bluegrass of the albums tracks are just so pretty.
That said, I love every song. I only put "Truth No. 2" at the bottom because something had to go there and that song gets very repetitive once it hits the second chorus and I just wish it had more exciting switches in the structure and production but it never does so it gets stale quickly.
I wonder how this rankdown would've been shaken up if The Incident hadn't happened and there were more hit singles.

WOW! Fully expected "Soldier" to have this! Can't be too upset because LTG is also a great song, but I do also vastly prefer "Soldier" so I do wish that could've been the outcome here. That one is just incredible. Stops me in my tracks every time. Thanks for hosting tim!
