Was not expecting action to be taken this swiftly LMAO
This is good, dude had his second chance in December when he was allowed to be back on SNL despite not caring about the pandemic, there's no reason to give this man a third chance.

Iβm from the NYC area so I actually never heard of Morgan Wallen until today. But a country artist caught being racist? Shocker. Iβm pleasantly surprised to see that the rather conservative country music industry is punishing him already. That alone is progress. I would have been here for this if they said they dropped him from their label. That's a more radical response. This just seems like it's meant to pacify people and act like it's more fiery than it actually is. Correct me if Iβm wrong, but if they dropped him couldnβt another label swoop in and sign him tomorrow? It seems this way is actually greater punishment since it effectively chains him to a label that refuses to promote him. He could always sign with another label if he got dropped by his current label but knowing how labels usually structure contracts, if his label really wanted, they could find a way to make his current situation a way of him jeopardizing his contract and violating the terms of his deal and he could get really punished that way. There are likely some wild financial repercussions included in his contract in the event that he ever does anything to jeopardize it. Some contracts can state that for a specific period of time, you make no money from all the funds your recordings generate and that can be anywhere from months to years, depending on what you agreed on. Artists never expect that they'll breach their contracts so they usually agree to whatever the labels suggest as punishement in the event that they do. His label is only suspending him because they want to build him up to be a mainstream star so they can make as much money from him for as long as possible. They lose in the long run if they drop him and they know.

This is the biggest over-reaction with history. I reckon if Morgan Wallen was put in prison for saying the N-word all you people would say "It's the right thing to do" or brainstorming ways to keep him in prison for longer.
Saying the N-word is considered to be worse nowadays by many people than things like getting a girl pregnant and abandoning her and the child. I think the latter is obviously a much worse thing to do, but you people clearly don't think this way.

^Um...WHAT. Racism in Country has been a THING clearly, and this revelation proves that. So we shouldn't be jumping down his throat for what he said?! Just slap him on his wrist huh?

So this Morgan Wallen talk has opened up a debate that Iβve been thinking out for a while now, can you seperate the person from the artist? Personally, I assume every famous and rich person is trash and has done/said problematic things behind the scenes because no one is perfect so I'm hardly ever surprised when they get exposed. I'm a fan of people strictly for their artistic or athletic contributions to society and nothing else. I don't look up to any famous person as a role model or someone I should fashion my life after and I believe more people need to do the same. You shouldn't look up to a person simply because they're more rich, more famous and more successful than you are. This ^^^ After being fooled by fans into believing Brendon Urie had 'changed' from his very problematic past, I've really grown skeptical of celebrities - not to mention the pandemic really showed how much they live in their own privileged bubble (*coughs* Dua Lipa). And of course, how many of them have been unapologetically willing to give a platform to known sex offenders and abusers, from Nicki Minaj and Drake to Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and Mariah Carey. While I do believe the art and the artist are often intrinsically connected, especially in a medium so personal as music, I can look past some controversies and focus on their artistic contributions. Ultimately, it's a case-by-case situation, though. From my experience, I've struggled to separate the art from the artist when much of their persona and lyrics are related to their real life scandals. Otherwise, if the music resonates with me, I can appreciate it objectively, though I agree that depending on the offense, the individual doesn't deserve to have a platform and further industry support, especially when they have shown no growth.

What a pathetic response. So what do you think is worse, a father abandoning his child or a guy saying the N-word? Why can't they both be bad? Why try to make a comparison to justify his doing? And he's not getting arrested let alone going to prison.

Will never understand why some people bend themselves over backwards in foolishness to defend racist scumbags. There's so many country artists out there who are decent people and much MUCH more talented than Morgan. Support them instead.

This is a shame that Wallen said this. Oh well. Luckily I listen to his music as an endorsement of his talent rather than to say I agree with his morals, so I will have no shame in continuing to bop to the best country album in a while.

If Eminem after promoting homophobia, misogyny, violence, abuse & rape his whole career is still having huge fanbase (that defends his every action), unwavered sales & relevance in popculture without sincere remorse then Morgan will be fine after this cools down coz his fans/MAGA guys will find excuses & explanations like stans do & ppl after few years will stop giving s**t if he's racist/not π¬ I feel like Eminemβs fans have (had?) more influence than Morganβs fans - but I suppose it depends because I donβt see the impacts of country fandom the way I have from alternative/rap that Eminem catered to. If anything, he might have fans of Toby Keith fans maybe? Idk. At any rate, I doubt Eminem would have as much an impact today if he came out with the same songs he started with back then and his continued popularity is probably more residual than anything. Heβs seen declines and his legacy is built around his abilities, successes (and controversies) but Iβm not sure time will treat him as well as we might think.

I think what heβs trying to say is celebrities do terrible things all the time, but itβs only saying the N word that actually has repercussions.
Iβm not a fan of whataboutism but it is interesting to think about what gets excused by listeners and what does not.

Saying the N-word is bad, but is less bad than punching your girlfriend, for example.

Wouldnβt be surprised if Tom MacDonald tries to take Morgan Wallen under his wing as independent artists. Edit : it's begun, mf's destroying itunes chart iTunes really doesn't look that different at the moment. "7 Summers" & "More Than My Hometown" gained a little bit, but nothing really significant yet. Am I missing something?

I get what you're trying to say but its a weak argument because tons of famous people have been cancelled for other situations aside from being racist, but they are famous so they usually bounce back. Let's not act like Morgan Wallen's career is over, once this s**t blows over he'll be picked back up and dropping radio hits. The Dixie Chicks on the other hand never got the chance to bounce back. EDIT: Also Marilyn Manson just got dropped from his label for allegedly beating/sexual assaulting his ex, which is different from saying the N-word right? So there you go.

Okay, velaxti, here's my thing with you. A part of me is looking at the Wallen situation, and thinking "Wait, they didn't do this to Dr Luke/Chris Brown because... why?" But just because the industry as a whole might be hypocritical, doesn't mean I can't support them doing what they're doing now. Stopping some injustice while being quiet about others is better than stopping no injustices.

Do they think that we on this forum wouldn't collectively blacklist people like Chris Brown and Tekashi 69 if we had that kind of power?? If the point is that artists need to face stronger consequences in general for being terrible people and hurting others, then I agree. But that doesn't make this particular backlash unjustified.
