Regardless of all the praise and Grammy awards for the previous album, the first two albums remain my two absolute favorites, masterpieces to me, tong-in-cheek, musically great, fun, awesome smart lyrics. I still like her and the visuals for this new era are very good, but FOR ME music wise the last two projects have been a bit vanilla compared to the two first ones. Perhaps there wasn’t more to say about the topics she approached in the first two albums and decided to move forward with a calmer tone. Of course she remains a great artist.

I appreciate this viewpoint. I went back to Pageant Material and it's definitely a stronger album than Golden Hour, but I feel like sometimes, the Grammys likes to lavish praise on an artist's lesser work in order to play catch-up (see also: Beck and Arcade Fire, among others). I plan on spending more time with Star-Crossed, by listening to the album, watching the movie, and watching interviews, but I think, overall, I prefer old Kacey as well. This soft-focus, AM radio music is a vibe, but not a go-to style of mine, overall.

I think justified and star-crossed setup an album that we just didn't get, that, for me, was hoping to be an "album of the year" quality album. I was let down with that expectation, and that was my bad for thinking that's what she had intended on creating.
These sounds and songs don't go anywhere for me, and as a pop/country type of hybrid, most of these songs lean on the boring side to me.
"There is a Light" is probably the one standout in this album for me, and is where I would have loved to see the album go.
Her voice sounds pleasant, though.

So awesome to see her getting her best debut this far into her career!
I wonder if she can get even more than that (considering HDDs initial prediction for Golden Hour was 32k-35k and it ended up doing 49k)

Yeah pretty obsessed with this. I still think Golden Hour is her masterpiece but this is an excellent, logical progression sonically and serves as a brilliant counterpart (and counterpoint). The album really delivers as a whole narrative, but sorta wish she hadn’t sold it as the three-act tragedy, which built up higher expectations in terms of structure (think Queen of the Clouds), but those acts are there in general. The third act is definitely the weakest, but there isn’t a bad song here. The production is glorious. Her voice is right on target. Lyrically maybe not quite as sharp or wondrous on the whole, but still very strong and worthy of her talent and budding reputation.
Immediate song ranking:
Star-crossed Good Wife Cherry blossom Justified Simple times Enough said If this was a movie Breadwinner Hookup scene Camera roll Keep lookin up Angel What doesn’t kill me There is a light Gracias a la vida

I adore "What Doesn't Kill You." Goes in a different direction than you'd expect from the title. "Breadwinner" is another standout on my first listen. EDIT: Second listen, and I can definitely understand why she described it as GH's sequel. I wouldn't say it's better than GH, although they feel close in quality level. I think STDP has higher highs than anything here, but overall I'd rank this album above it alongside GH.

I love how "all over the place" people's favorites are (kinda like Golden Hour)
Mine have been changing a lot... even the ones I though were fillers (like "Keep Looking Up") have been growing on me a lot and are now up on my list

Production on the album is on point (especially on tracks like "if this was a movie..." and "cherry blossom", but as a whole I could take it or leave it. There's no song that is actively bad, but lyrically it just feels like Katy Perry went to a writing camp and this is the result.
That said, there are a few songs here that are discography highlights including the two songs I previously mentioned and "good wife".

I've been listening to a lot of Golden Hour recently and this album does sound like a nice progression from it. It's not as good (big shoes to fill), but on first listen I really enjoy it.
Highlights for me are: "Star-Crossed", "Good Wife", "Cherry Blossom", "Simples Times", "Justified", "Breadwinner", "What Doesn't Kill Me" & "There Is A Light".
I think I'm going to like the album more with multiple listens.

Ignore my previous post. Album of the year for me. Maybe this is bc im going through a very amicable and bittersweet divorce right now. I literally went to the mall (?!) today to shop for myself and played this in my headphones and got my life. This album is perfect.

mamaloveme and anyone else outside of the US — you can find information on local release dates + where to watch here (basically it's on MTV where Paramount+ isn't available):
www.kaceymusgraves.com/film
if you still don't have anything available to you and you're dying to watch, I'd recommend setting up a VPN and using Paramount+ US to make a trial account or something.
sadly MTV is cable here, it was free when in 2000s

Okay, so I think my top three are "hookup scene," "camera roll," and "simple times." I think these songs blend Kacey's country strengths with her current sound really well.
Has anyone enjoyed the film? I loved the trailer but haven't had the chance to watch it yet. I haven't read much positive reception about it so far.

Had the chance of watch the film yesterday and I loved it! It’s a very psychedelic dream-like experience but, at the same time, very human. Visually, it’s really stunning too. I have to say though, the enjoyment of it is definitely enhanced by your familiarity with the album/songs… having known the songs and loved the album, the visuals really hit me. As they cut and use dialogs during songs, i would definitely recommend listening to the songs before…

This is gonna be such a massive moment for her. She’s gonna continue to rise into such meteoric levels that country radio is gonna kick itself.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED that performance. And it was just so f**king lovely to see her there; it was like Shania Twain all over again.

After Chloe she was the only other amazing performer tonight. I was surprised she did only star-crossed, I was expecting justified so this was a pleasant surprise..
Really helped give the song an even more cinematic haunting vibe.
