Okay, I can explain. In Early 2020, I made lists on my blog of the Best and Worst Hit Songs of 2014 (I'm not linking them here, since they'd be dead reveals for all of my other rankings).From the perspective of me at the time, this represented a more mature, thoughtful direction for FGL, rather than just the cliched Bro Country they've made for most of their career. Sure, it's about dirt, but it's more importantly about connections to one's roots and the ephemeral nature of life ("you know you came from it, and someday you'll return to it", all wrapped up in the sound of a classic power ballad, which I am a total and complete sucker for. As I mentioned earlier, I took my rankings from back then and used them for the rankdown, as I still feel as though they're generally indicative of my thoughts on the year, and I already had enough on my plate. Now, due to the events of the past year, I've become a lot more jaded about this sort of patriotism (2020 took my faith in America and blew it to smithereens), so it might not be this high if I started from scratch nowadays, but I still think it's a very good song that (along with H.O.L.Y) stands as a high-water mark in FGL's career. |

You are correct. Paula was a rape to most our senses It was so hard to take the message of Paula as being sincere because on one hand he is singing heartfelt passionate lyrics but then he is out there gyrating his body and humping the stage while singing. Perhaps if he had some self control and wasn't out there grinding and humping Miley and putting his hand up some other woman who isn't his wife's ass, he wouldn't have lost Paula. |

100. This Is How We Roll (#98) - So outside of original rankdowns, FGL never had a song outside of the Bottom 20. F for them, although not really. Their most tolerable song ain't even country at all. 99. Burnin' It Down (#79) - Okay, this was a bit acceptable in my part. The rest, not so much. 98. Wiggle (#30) - Damn this is low-key a banger, too bad it is hated that much. I wish it had the success "Savage Love" had (but really I wish "Cheyenne" had the success of either of them) Also, both RD at #98! 97. Bottoms Up (#100) - Never really cared, and I don't even drink. Pass! 96. Beachin' (#95) - Welp, I'm screwed off a perfect ranking! 95. Trumpets (#52) - As long as "Talk Dirty" escapes Bottom 20, I'm completely fine with the eliminations regarding Jason Derulooooo~ Also this: Damn straight! 94. All About That Bass (#55) - Oh right, 2014 was that year of songs regarding behinds. 93. Best Day of My Life (#13) - Okay, I may not return to this a lot right now, but I absolutely adore this back in the day. 92. Dirt (#99) - Changing this with the #100 would've been better for me. Still, their best song ain't even a freaking country song at all! 91. No Mediocre (#92) - THAT'S THE SECOND ALREADY!!! 90. 23 (#88) - We're just starting this and I got like 3 close calls with Perfect Ranking. And if the Hot 100 list joined it would've got one. 89. Rude (#29) - Maybe the same as my #13, the only difference is that I didn't listen that much compared to it. Also, "Don't Kill The Magic" >>> "Rude" 88. American Kids (#89) - May the Rankdown Gods bless me with a Perfect Ranking, like this is my 4th close already! 87. Na Na (#77) - Acceptable? I guess? 86. Blurred Lines (#53) - I used to be a huge sucker for this song back in the day, and while I still find this catchy (and yes, come at me with your flaming pitchforks, I said it), the controversy behind this wasn't. |
