I'll try to submit for this, I'd like to get tagged in results at the very least. You've got three and a half weeks, you'll make it. TBH it depends on how much I end up liking these songs as I'm listening. I know almost nothing about 2014

if 2014 is the best year of all time for music then i'm scared about ranking the other year-end lists I can assure you that 2014 is a mediocre year for music in the grand scheme of things. It's better than 2016-18, but pretty weak compared to most other years (especially years from the 20th Century that have far less outright bad music than years from this century, the bad stuff back then was more boring and/or cheesy than outright intolerable).

...okay, so I ALMOST forgot to do this. I'm glad that I remembered before March rolled along. Also, things have slowed down in terms of submissions, though that's to be expected early on. I'm itching to do ballot updates, though, so just keep that in mind.
If you do not wish to be tagged, or if you DO wish to be tagged, make sure to let me know! And keep reminding me if I forget to do so.

Finally finished & submitted my list earlier today, and I have to agree with those calling 2014 one of the worst years of the ‘10s for the Hot 100. At least the bad songs in 2016 were interesting, a lot of these were just... boring.
1 to 16: Great 17 to 29: Good 30 to 50: Decent 51 to 87: Meh 88 to 96: Bad 97 to 100: Terrible

Here's how I'd rank the years of the 2010s that I've looked at: 1: 2012 2: 2011 (Gap in quality) 3: 2010 4: 2014 5: 2019 (Gap in quality) 6: 2017 7: 2016 2013, 2015 and 2018 I have yet to look at.

We've hit the 15 submission mark right at the two week deadline. We've been moving at a bit of a snail's crawl, but I know how Pulse is, I'm sure the rankings will start coming in more and more over the next two weeks.
Oh, and we're a submission away from getting to the next ballot update, so there's a little extra incentive to submit soon.

I'll definitely have this done by Friday. I'm glad I decided to do this, so much stuff that I remember from back then. It's weird to think of how the entire music landscape is different from this point in time. Most of these names aren't even chart presences anymore.

Took us long enough to get to this point, but hello, ballot update! For those of you who might be wondering, I will be doing a tag session later today tomorrow. (I forgot what day it is. )
Up to the plate this time are dremolus - solarpunk, @gabingston, willapted33, @matthewlam, 𝕡𝕙𝕖𝕖𝕓𝕤, wyckyd, filthy, and razorshark! A couple of you submitted, and, assuming we get enough ballots to do so, you guys will be part of the next ballot update.
- One of the seven songs that spent every movement in the top ten from the last ballot update dropped out this time and is currently still outside of the top ten, but the other six songs are still in the top ten, none of them lower than #7.
- The song that was #1 at the end of the previous ballot update is still there, and it has now opened up an 80 point lead over #2. #2 is much closer to #3, but the lead there is still 30 points.
- The "shockingly low" song from the previous update did move up this time, now in the top 20.
- I forgot to mention this in the last ballot update, but hey, let's check out how many songs have been in the bottom ten the entire time now, why not? We have *checks notes* four songs that have spent every movement in the bottom ten, including three of the bottom four. The song that was #100 in the last ballot update is still there, but only after spending time outside of #100 in this update. The gap between #99 and #100 is *much* larger now than it was in the last set, now facing a near 50 point gap. The gap between #98 and #100 is even larger, with almost 100 points separating the two songs.
- #10/#11 and #90/#91 update: 20 points separate the current songs hovering at the bottom of the top ten, while less than ten points separate #90 and #91.
- THRESHOLDS! AHHHHHHH! The top two are the first two songs to crack 1500 points, and the top seven all have 1400. 38 songs have gotten to 1000 or more points, and only 21 songs have yet to reach 500 points. That's nothing, though, compared to our #100, which is the only song yet to reach 200 points.
- SDs...not SD cards, standard deviations. I just feel like I have to point that out. The highest standard deviation remains the song that was the highest last time, now sitting at #30. While its SD isn't quite as high as it was last time, it's still miles ahead of the second highest SD, which now can be found at #43. The lowest SDs have changed more, with the songs at the top now gravitating to these spots. Outside of the song at #95, which has the second lowest SD, the other songs in the top five lowest SDs are all in the top ten, including the lowest SD, which is our current #1.
- I hear the calling card of the ballot update coming on fast...
Ties are much less in abundance in this ballot update, and there are no top ten ties to be had, so no alarms need to be sounded today. Having said that, we do have a couple of ties, specifically at #43, #48, and #84.

Here we go, it's clutch time. Things have been kind of slow, though submissions have picked up over the last couple of days. I expect a flurry of submissions to come in before the deadline next Sunday. We have at least one thing planned for this thread in the near future, so it's not like this thread is just going to be reminders and a survey post over the next week.
If you do not wish to be tagged, or if you DO wish to be tagged, make sure to let me know! And keep reminding me if I forget to do so.

Tomorrow, I plan on finally getting around to something I've been meaning to do for weeks now. Until then, we're still waiting for a bunch of you to submit. Anytime now.

Tomorrow, I plan on finally getting around to something I've been meaning to do for weeks now. Hey, I stayed true to my word! I'm proud of myself today.
2014 Top 40s That I Really Want to Talk About Part One: Debuts, Last Hits, and Lone Chances
I have no idea how these guys became one of the biggest acts in music for a few years. This should have killed their career before it started.
The Chainsmokers - #SELFIE Peak: #16 | Weeks: 11
I can't lie, I love this song.
John Newman - Love Me Again Peak: #30 | Weeks: 18
A song that went top ten purely because of a viral video, and I couldn't begin to tell you how it sounds, despite having listened to it recently.
Soko - We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow Peak: #9 | Weeks: 10
I learned today that PSY had another charting song on the Hot 100 after this...but all the way down at #97. You want to talk about a hangover...also, even as a PSY apologist, this song sucks.
PSY f/ Snoop Dogg - Hangover Peak: #27 | Weeks: 1
Fun fact: This song made Weird Al just the third artist in the Hot 100 era to have a top 40 hit in every decade since the 1980s, joining MJ and Madonna.
Weird Al Yankovic - Word Crimes Peak: #39 | Weeks: 2
Shawn Mendes has been around long enough that he got his big break through Vine. This isn't anything particularly special, but it's better than what immediately followed.
Shawn Mendes - Life of the Party Peak: #24 | Weeks: 2
Another debut single for an act that would become bigger later. I'd probably be kinder to their pre-"Black Beatles" singles now, if I gave them a listen today. For example, this is fine.
Rae Sremmurd - No Flex Zone!! Peak: #36 | Weeks: 20
We end part one with the song that effectively ended Jennifer Lopez's relevance as a singer. It's worse than you'd expect.
Jennifer Lopez f/ Iggy Azalea or Pitbull - Booty Peak: #18 | Weeks: 9

PSY is great, even his Nu Metal stuff is really great and full of personality, Hangover is hardly listenable though. It does serve a purpose for Six Degrees Of Seperation games when people try to connect American rappers to early K-pop artists.

some thoughts on some of the extras:
- as probably one of the few people who were aware of the chainsmokers here before "#selfie", seeing them go from remixes of mostly indie pop songs to shitty novelty songs was unexpected, to say the least
- I don't like john newman's discography quite as much as I did 6-8 years ago, but "love me again" is pretty good
- I haven't listened to "life of the party" in a while but it was a pretty big hit here and I remember it being super boring lol
- sometimes I try to return to "no flex zone" as I generally like rae sremmurd now, but it's always as bad as I've always found it lol

Swae Lee was 20 when No Flex Zone came out, yet he sounded like he was 12 or 13.
