Itβs weird because a few years ago I remember a thing about Normani wanting to make pop music less white and challenge the idea that black women were always rnb or hip hop singers.
I mean maybe she just wanted to lean more into Cardiβs style for the collab, and the next single will be pop, weβll have to see

I don't know if this has been discussed here but she said a few days ago that she had to pay for a percentage of the video's budget. Run away from that label sis.

I do recall acts like Katy paying for some videos like "Hey Hey Hey" which made sense because in that case it was pretty much not a good move money-wise since it wasn't even gonna be a single, let alone a hit. But I'd think your relatively new act that is just needing that breakout solo hit would get a decent budget. Especially since the video is at least 50% of the reason why this single is getting any traction at all. But you might be right and it's probably a relatively common thing.

Itβs normal now bc music doesnβt sell like it used to and labels are stingy with budgets. Thatβs also why we started seeing product placements in videos. Labels used to just throw a million dollars at artists for their videos like it was nothing. I miss those days.

Well kudos to the good sis Normani because that video easily was the best of the year.

Labels used to just throw a million dollars at artists for their videos like it was nothing. I miss those days. Yeah I remember how there was a big deal about "Toxic's" video budget being a milli, but when you make pop history sometimes you gotta pay. And even the biggest "Wild Side" fan will tell you the video is way more iconic than the song here. Normani has huge potential on the visuals departament. Not a lot of people even trying to do choreo like her. The label needs to give her the resources or she's never gonna blow up like we want her to.

I don't know the ins and outs of all artist's contracts and how every label works behind the scenes, but I remember TLC talking about how they had recoup costs for music videos, outfits, touring equipment etc to their label and that was in the 90s. I know they had a horrible contract, but I am thinking this probably happens a lot more often than one would think.
Normani has the talent, the look, and knows how to produce the visuals, she just needs to work on the right material.

Itβs weird because a few years ago I remember a thing about Normani wanting to make pop music less white and challenge the idea that black women were always rnb or hip hop singers. I mean maybe she just wanted to lean more into Cardiβs style for the collab, and the next single will be pop, weβll have to see I think Normani's thing was that she didn't want to be boxed in, so she was trying to make a point that she could serve pop music as well as r&b. I also think she might have been attempting to challenge people's typical ideas of what "pop" music actually can sound like. I don't remember the exact quote now though so I might me misremembering that, but I definitely recall her saying she didn't like the idea of being categorized as just one thing. When is her TV performance of this coming? A VMA performance is probably all but guaranteed, but that's almost two months away still so I'm hoping we get a couple of talk shows before that. I don't know if this has been discussed here but she said a few days ago that she had to pay for a percentage of the video's budget. Run away from that label sis. That's pretty normal for most artists though I'm pretty sure? Most music videos are payed for in part by the artist. Sorta. Typically, the label recoups video costs from the artist. That means the label foots the bill upfront, with the expectation that the artist will pay it back later from their sales/streaming royalties. Normani OTOH chipped in some money upfront and that is something I definitely don't hear a lot of new soloists saying they did. But that is also probably because a lot of new artists (and several not so new ones lbr) aren't fortunate enough to even have the money to chip in upfront, never mind to the level that this video is on. Normani was booking endorsements during her off time and I'm inclined to think that with along with everything else that contributed to her long absence, part of it may have simply come down to her stacking up her own coins so she could help pay for her own expenses when she finally did return. The upside to this is that she will owe the label less when the album cycle is done. We should keep in mind that Normani didn't pay for all of the video upfront. She just added something extra to make sure she got what she wanted. I've s**t talked RCA for a solid decade now, but I don't think this is the same RCA that threw Tinashe in a basement after Aquarius or that held Jordin Sparks for 5 years and never gave her an album. I think 2021 RCA wants to support Normani, but just doesn't have the resources to give her the full push she deserves (and if Keep Cool is primarily the one responsible for funding this applies tenfold because Normani is really the only money earner KC has), so they're doing the best they can with what they have. I don't know if there's any other label she could go to and guarantee better treatment. RCA isn't the only broke bitch on the block and most of the labels that do have money already have enough multiple artists that suck up all their time and money, so Normani wouldn't be guaranteed a proper amount of attention. It's not like she can just hop out of a contract on a whim anyway so I won't indulge the thought. Obviously JMO but the song on its own is a 10/10 banger, so I don't think the music itself is the issue here. It is very urban so pop audience might have a funky reaction to it but that is very much a them problem and not a Normani problem! *sticks nose in air* Said reaction likely won't become apparent until it nears top 20/callout territory and that will probably be a while. As a fan I have accepted that her max commercial potential will either take a long time to reach or be unfairly limited due to having less money to work with, but as long as she can manage to put out high quality material like this she will never have to worry about not having a steady career. That's all I can ask for from any of my faves.

oh, Cardi, girl. She's a good example of an artist who would benefit from avoiding social media, if that were possible in today's world. She's TOO real, so real that on one hand I applaud her, on the other I'm completely turned off. I already don't really listen to her music, but do appreciate her visuals and overall vibe on screen. I like her persona, I don't like her personal victimization. I also can do without knowing everything about everything and how being disrespected by stan twitter makes her change what work she promotes. Sad.
Social media ruins a lot of things for me - so maybe my age is talking. But I stand by it. Society is on a downward spiral in the social media era. We know too much about everything and everyone's opinions and thoughts. It's a mess.
As I sit her and type my opinions and thoughts.

Cardi is way too bothered by what random people tweet at her. It's been a few years and she has not improved on that regard.

Who cares what TROLLS think I cant imagine most artists caring or atleast outwardly showing they do. Girl.
The song is hot and her verse is the added OOMPH and Normani and her both make it hot. Dont let a few stans who dont like you, never will ruin a brilliant song and moment
The new school artists are way too trivial and emotional for me

I actually love the Cardi verse and think it adds some dimension to the song, but to each their own

People when a new act does a collab: they should have done a solo song this is suppossed to be her big break!!
People when said solo song flops ("Motivation" anyone?): omg they should have done a big name feature!!!!
Make it make sense.

Where is the performance? Where is the next promo? Does her team not know we are in the streaming era and things move swiftly? Wtf.
