Chevelle really returned to form with their newest album, and this is no exception. Nice, syncopated rhythms almost give it a tool-like feel. The Yazmin song was really good, though. Great old-school R&B sound. Tough choice here.

Devious matchup, because "Back of the Truck" is the worst song I've heard this year - perhaps one of the worst songs I've heard in the last ten years. Maybe even one of the worst songs I've heard in my entire life. Even a typical country song is better than "acting like a slut. looking like a bitch" over and over and over. I don't know if this was supposed to be ironic or not but Jesus Christ no vocals would have been better than that refrain being repeated x infinity. "Don't Be A Stranger" at least has a nice message behind it, as a country pop song goes it is spit-polished and I can see why people love it. Just... thank God "This Island" was next on the list to wash the awful taste of "Back of the Truck" out of my mouth.

TV Priest is one of those indie bands that has a lot of hype behind them in music lover circles. They demonstrate a lot of musicianship on "This Island", it's a crazy, noisy cavalcade but never without careful thought into it so it doesn't descend into outright cacophony. The vocals aren't something you'll forget for a while either. "Champion" is typical Miranda Lambert, inoffensive but lacking anything that sticks with me.

"One More" is a pitch-perfect club song, great for vibing on your headphones too. The other song has a nice goofy vibe but the overly autotuned vocals brought it down below "One More" for me.

"Piistol Star" is one of the greatest standouts from Chevelle's album NIRATIAS. I love it, with a great heavy lead and relentless progression, it wastes nothing of its five minute running time. "Nothing Matters" is fine but I gotta rep my hometown boys with Chevelle here.

This one was really tough. Phoebe is a great songwriter, but "Easy" has some great performances and hooks on it. I'm giving it to "ICU" but both songs are pretty damn good and if "Easy" moves on I could easily see myself voting for it against different competition.

"Opus" is an apt title for Black Country, New Road's epic rocker. It kicks off with an awesome horn intro and never lets you go from there, though it's certainly an exhausting listen due to the runtime. "Muka Dua" was great fun (even though I couldn't understand a word of it) but I liked the buildup in "Opus" too much for it to not get my vote.

- "Don't Be a Stranger" hit me like a freight train the first time I heard it. I believe I listened to it about 40 times in a row, and I'm already at 100 scrobbles of the song in like a month and a half, lol. Absolutely obsessed. The harmonies on this are amazing, that post chorus is absolute gold, and Ward Thomas and Cam both work so wonderfully on this track. I hope you guys love it as much as I do. :) Cynthia's writeup for "Back of the Truck" was pretty spot-on. This was terrible.

- "This Island" was a nice change from "Back of the Truck". I really like this one a lot. The driving instrumental of this is really good. I get the vocal style for these kind of vocalists can be a bit polarizing, but I think John TV Priest is more on the tamer end. Really solid first listen. "Champion" was really pleasant. I've been enjoying Miranda's music a lot more lately, and this was no different. I'm leaning "This Island" here, but "Champion" is very close to overtaking it.

- Ooh, this was a bop. I knew just by looking at SG Lewis and Nile Rodgers on a song, it was gonna be a bop, and it sure didn't disappoint. I think this unexpectedness of "money machine" when I first heard it is what made the song good to me. Everything else I've heard from them has been alright, but nothing I would really come back to. It's okay. SG Lewis is taking this easy.

- I feel like Chevelle on autopilot is still super good, which is what this song was. I really liked the instrumental of this one. I think I like this more than "Self Destructor". Great song. I love the jazzy production of "Morning Matters". Really smooth R&B. I have these at the same grade, but I'm gonna go with "Morning Matters" here for the underdog.

- I actually hadn't heard this song until this tournament. "Easy" was decently good. I like the production, I like Troye, I like Kacey, I'm just not the biggest fan of the excessive autotune on the song. Maybe the catchiness of the track can override that in the future. "ICU" was good. I'm not as in love with Phoebe Bridgers as a lot of people are here. She's good, but not THAT good. I have these tied as well, but I'm gonna go with "Easy" here.

- Black Country, New Road is like post punk put into an auto-generator and out comes nonsense lyrics and instrumentation you hear in every post punk song. They are not bad by any means, and are actually pretty good, but there are so many people that are so enamored with them when I don't think they're that much different than the rest of the bunch, lol. With all that said, "Opus" was one song on their album that really stood out to me. It got Tool-esque at points, the horns are really nice, and everything comes together really well. Slickly done. I liked "Muka Dua" a lot too. Super fun vibe going on here. I'm almost tempted to give it my vote here, but I'm still leaning "Opus". Solid pick still.

- I know I've heard LP before, and I don't think I cared much for her music. This has a nice little instrumental to it, but that's about it. Kinda forgettable to me, unfortunately. "Drown" was really nice hip hop here. I liked all three artist's contributions to the song, and I felt like I was vibing the whole way through. Nice discovery.

I love Cam, and I had known this song was out for quite some time but hadn't gone around to listening to it so it was nice to have that opportunity here. Certainly going to be charting it this summer! "Back of the Truck" was actually....a big-ass bop lmfao? Like there's no way in hell I'm ever gonna go out of my way and seek this out but some of these lyrics had me GAGGED! Ultimately tho @antigonerising hit the summary right on the head lmao

TV Priest - “This Island” (American Idiot, #1) vs. Miranda Lambert - “Champion” (Tay, #6) "This Island" was fine enough, and I do like some heavier rock music but this was a bit too bombastic for me personally. That, and of course I'm gonna go with my pick lol! "Champion" is just so beautiful. The production is so soothing and to me carries a timeless vibe, and the vocal delivery, particularly of the chorus, is classic MirLam. It's had quite a run thus far on my personal chart, and so far it's acting like a multi-week #1; which would ensure its inclusion in my 2021 year-end rankdown!

SG Lewis f/ Nile Rodgers - “One More” (Juan Carlos, #1) vs. 100 gecs - “sympathy 4 the grinch” (1^∞, #6) This 100 gecs song was not as outright terrible as the others that I've heard in these things, but it's still just not my cup of Joe. I wasn't much of a fan of "One More" either unfortunately, but went with it here as it was a little more tolerable imo.

"Don't Be A Stranger" is cute. I liked the harmonies in there. "Back of the Truck" was... interesting. I guess in a gay club this might go off but it's not really for me.

"One More" was my favorite song on Times that I hadn't heard ("Chemicals" and "Feed the Fire" are my overall favorites on the album), it's a jam. "sympathy 4 the grinch" is alright, it's fun but I feel like the novelty of 100 gecs kind of wore off for me.

"ICU" is one of my favorite album tracks along with "I Know the End", "Chinese Satellite", and "Graceland Too" and would've been my choice for the followup to "Kyoto" instead of "Savior Complex".

- "Don't Be A Stranger" is so pretty! I can definitely see myself coming back to this! What a thoroughly enjoyable song, although I didn't expect less since James usually comes through with the great picks. I'm sorry Pheebs! I loved your song in the last set, but this is so awful. I can't tell if it's even the humorous kind of bad. It's just hard to listen to.

- "This Island" is kind of a banger. The vocals aren't amazing, but the instrumentation here is super strong and it's just a full on jam. "Champion" is really pretty and I've loved a lot of Miranda Lambert's recent output. She's someone who I consider a highlight in country music and I'm happy that Wildcard won Best Country Album at the Grammys. I am leaning toward TV Priest here, but this is a close call.

- I love almost anything Nile Rodgers is a part of. And I've come to enjoy SG Lewis as well after "Impact" was one of my favorite WTM discoveries. "One More" is a funky jam and I'm so here for it! 100 gecs have always been a mixed bag for me at best. This song is so short and I just don't know what to think of it. It's a little on the noisy side, but if I were to rate this, it'd be pretty middle of the road for me.
