Piano In The Dark - Brenda Russell feat. Joe Esposito
For what it's worth, I ranked this song #4 on the Billboard Top 100 Hits of 1988 rankdown. I love that song a lot, so that means a lot to me

Today's extra is a double feature. Up first, a song from the Less Than Zero soundtrack. Peaking at #12 on the soul chart and #31 on the Hot 100, it was later sampled in the remix to Blaque's "808".
Going Back To Cali - LL Cool J
Next, the first Top 10 hit by this rapper from NYC who got his start as a member of The Treacherous Three. It peaked at #4 soul and was one of his two Hot 100 entries. The chorus was later interpolated in Will Smith's 1999 hit of the same name.

Got more extras from LL Cool J and Kool Moe Dee, this time focusing on their beef. Kool Moe fired the first shot in a song he co-wrote and co-produced with Teddy Riley. It was his first single to hit the soul chart, peaking at #22.
How Ya Like Me Now - Kool Moe Dee
That prompted a response from LL, which was the B-side to "Going Back To Cali".
Jack The Ripper - LL Cool J
And that prompted a response from Kool Moe. It peaked at #11 soul and samples Michael Jackson's "Bad" and "Thriller", as well as "Jack The Ripper".
Let's Go - Kool Moe Dee

Today's extra comes to us as a result of a collaboration between two British groups. Their big hit topped the dance chart and peaked at #8 soul and #13 on the Hot 100. In addition, it reached the Top 10 in 15 other countries, hitting #1 in 6. Contains numerous samples.

Hmm.... Who knew I needed Vanessa Williams "He's Got That Look" so much in my life. I was 11 at the time and probably didn't hear this on the radio. I'm not sure if we even had cable yet so I wasn't catching it on a video channel either.... Now when you were 11 back then you had very limited budget for full cassettes and sometimes even singles. There were only so many "yard sales", dance shows etc etc one boy could do to come up with money for my music obsession and Donna Summer came first. lol I had barely heard "The Right Stuff" at the time but did hear "Dreamin" at the time. This song may have put me over the edge at the time and purchased the whole "tape"! Thanks for the share..

I Loved a lot of The Jets music. "Make It Real" was/is still an all time favorite and can stop me in my tracks. I watched an "Unsung" episode on them recently. (new addiction) lol I forgot they did so well on the RnB charts as well as the pop. I had just gotten into Billboard the prior year so probably didn't even notice.

Dirty Diana - Michael Jackson
MJ had another song charting at the same time, this one a duet with a Motown legend. It peaked at #4 soul, but despite the star power, it only managed a #80 peak on the Hot 100.
Get It - Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson
Fun fact: "Dirty Diana" and "Get It" were in the Top 10 at the same time.

Today's extra is by a singer who got her start on Star Search, winning the junior vocalist competition. Later becoming the youngest female to sign with a record label and release an album, her first charted single peaked at #11 on the soul chart and #38 on the Hot 100. She was not yet a teenager at the time.

Dirty Diana - Michael Jackson
I've always been a bit of a metalhead, and Michael Jackson knocked this one out of the park with an assist from Steve Stevens, a world-renowned guitar stuntman best known for his partnership with Billy Idol. Both guitar solos on "Dirty Diana" are fierce as hell, especially the second one (after the final chorus), and the crazy "ray gun" sound effect at the end always makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck when I hear it.
Come to think of it, Michael made two metal songs ("Beat It" and "Dirty Diana") and Janet made one ("Black Cat"), and all three of them reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, so they're both honorary metal musicians to me. In fact, Janet got rave reviews for "Black Cat" from one of the biggest metal icons of all: Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister, front man for Motörhead, and godfather of "thrash" metal. (To understand his significance, Motörhead inspired the formation of several 1980s metal bands, the most noteworthy of which was Metallica.)

Love Will Save The Day - Whitney Houston
This is Whitney Houston's most underrated song, and either this or "So Emotional" is my favorite of all her songs.

Two more extras here. First, the signature song and biggest hit for this band from Cincinnati, peaking at #4 on the soul chart and #10 on the Hot 100. It was later referenced in Mariah Carey's 2005 smash "We Belong Together", and was sampled in the Plies and Ashanti song "Want It, Need It".
Two Occasions - The Deele
Next, a song that was first recorded by Dionne Warwick and later released as a single by Luther Vandross. The version by this saxophonist was the most successful, peaking at #12 soul.
So Amazing - Gerald Albright

I forgot about this and am working on it today.
I cannot believe "Two Occasions" peaked at #4 here. It should have been a #1!
