34. Thanks For My Child - Cheryl "Pepsii" Riley

Born in Brooklyn, Cheryl got her start in a band named Stargaze. Her first charted single became her biggest hit and signature song, reaching the Top 40 of the Hot 100. It garnered a bit of controversy, with some believing it was about teenage pregnancy. Not so, according to Full Force's Bowlegged Lou. He wrote the song after his wife was in the hospital after suffering a miscarriage, and was inspired by some of his friends who were single mothers as well as the women at the hospital who had either given birth or lost their babies.

During the 2000s, Cheryl appeared in a number of Tyler Perry plays, including Why Did I Get Married? and Madea Goes To Jail.

Fun facts: the child saying "I love you too mommy" at the end of the song was Bowlegged Lou's son. Also, the music video was directed by future Oscar winner Forest Whitaker.
