24. Da Butt - E.U.
Based in Washington, DC, Experience Unlimited had their biggest hit and only Hot 100 entry with this funktastic number set to a go-go beat. Appearing on the soundtrack to the movie School Daze (a Spike Lee joint), it was recently back in the spotlight because of Glenn Close dancing to it at The Oscars.
Stats Chart Entry: February 27, 1988 Peak Date: April 23, 1988 Weeks At #1: 1 Weeks In Top 10: 6 Weeks On Chart: 18 Hot 100 Peak: #35
Points: 304 Average: 22.33 Standard Deviation: 10.162 (2nd highest)
Two more Top 10s will be lost with the next reveal. Five more will shed a bottom 5.
Wow, I never really thought this would last this long as it did, tbh.

Today's extra is one of his signature songs. Peaking at #2 on the soul chart, it was notably sampled in the remix to Mariah Carey's "Thank God I Found You" which featured Joe and Nas.

The one that's really hurting me right now is losing "Fishnet" so soon. :(

I wanna post an extra! 1. "Say It Again" - Jermaine Stewart
R&B SINGLES: #15 May 28, 1988 1 week
BILLBOARD HOT 100: #27 May 7, 1988 1 week
This song has a cool reggae vibe to it, and some nice harmonic surprises throughout, which are more subtle in the verses, but more obvious at the end of each chorus. The brass is on point too, and gets more involved as the song progresses. Overall, it's a very well-written song.

In the meantime, enjoy this extra. It was his final solo Top 10 hit on the soul chart, peaking at #4, and was also his final solo Hot 100 entry.

I LOVE Stevie, but this was the first time I heard this song and it...terrible. Actually, its parent album is probably Stevie's worst. @antigonerising, thank you so much for the WAKE UUUUP!

16. Just Got Paid - Johnny KempBorn in the Bahamas, Johnny Kemp scored his biggest hit with this song, which he wrote with Keith Sweat and produced with Teddy Riley. In addition to topping the soul chart, it also hit #1 on the dance chart and reached the Top 10 of the Hot 100. The song garnered a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song, and was later covered by *NSYNC on their No Strings Attached album. Sadly, Johnny was found dead off the coast of Montego Bay in 2015. It's believed that he fell while walking on some rocks, hit his head, and drowned. Apologies to gonecountry ... StatsChart Entry: April 9, 1988 Peak Date: May 28, 1988 Weeks At #1: 2 Weeks In Top 10: 6 Weeks On Chart: 23 Hot 100 Peak: #10 Points: 445 Average: 16.46 Standard Deviation: 9.017 (7th highest)gonecountry - 1 Un-flipping-believable. Love Overboard beat this?!? This song rocks. Shit's getting real.

Cherelle and Teddy Penderassdown overstayed but I think Luther and Johnny are where they should be. Also, I had no idea about Johnny! So sad!

Yay I got "Just Got Paid" - it's okay but so very over played hence the middle of the pack rating. I really thought "Any Love" would be higher. "Joy" is a BOP!

You Will Know is a lovely song but I feel like a lot of Stevie's mid to late '80s hits are more or less brought down by his melodic and lyrical style, which was still distinctly 70s, being rather mismatched with the 80s production. 80s music as a whole is more 'of its time' than probably any other time in music history, but with Stevie's in particular he leaned in so much to that chintzy synthesized sound and it did not age well, with two or three exceptions.
It is weird to me that this is Cherrelle's only #1 hit on r&b bc it doesn't feel like it's one of her top 3.
Any Love isn't one of Luther's more 'signature' hits so while I do like it a lot, I'm not too surprised to see it go this round. The chorus kind of goes in a different direction from what the verses feel like they're building up to, and it ever so slightly throws it off for me. Kept a good song from being great.
idk why but Joy is a Teddy single that I just can't get into.
At the risk of getting my black card temporarily suspended, I always liked NSYNC's cover more than Johnny Kemp's original *runs and hides* The song's a bop either way, but Johnny's voice was kind of sandpapery.
What I have left: 1, 3-11, 15-18, 26 (I admittedly ranked that #26 song several spots too low). That's pretty solid, but I think I'm going to lose two or three more top 10s tomorrow. Not sure which ones, but most of the songs I still have remaining outside my own top ten are objectively top ten worthy and I see them getting there.

I love that Cherrelle song. one of my absolute faves from her. Such an underrated artist.
Johnny Kemp should have made it much higher!

They had their first Top 40 hit on the Hot 100 together, and they had their last Top 40 on the Hot 100 together. Today's extra was the last of those Top 40s, peaking at #28. On the soul chart, it was their second duet to top out at #2.
