I was raised on Luther and am a stan, but this was never one of my favorite hits of his. Like...I almost NEVER think of Any Love when I think of Luther.

Yay I got "Just Got Paid" - it's okay but so very over played hence the middle of the pack rating. I really thought "Any Love" would be higher. "Joy" is a BOP! Burnout is exactly why I rated "Just Got Paid" so low.

^^^ Is that true about Pebbles and "Girlfriend"??? ^^^ Was she wealthy before getting involved in the music industry?? Was she a manager before an entertainer?

I'm surprised both Pebbles songs got cut, I thought we'd only lose one of those today. I forgot Another Part of Me was still in here. It's a fine song, but with all the legendary songs Michael had I can't consider this one anywhere close to a 'classic' in his oeuvre. I had no idea what to do with George Michael. If I'd treated this as a 'regular' rankdown OMT would have been an easy top 5 but I didn't really know how to handle a pop singer in an r&b rankdown...even if he did top the r&b charts at the time. I settled for putting him in the middle. ^^^ Is that true about Pebbles and "Girlfriend"??? ^^^ Was she wealthy before getting involved in the music industry?? Was she a manager before an entertainer? Yeah, LA Reid told the story in his autobiography. Pebbles did not grow up wealthy at all; her mother was a divorced waitress and housekeeper. Pebbles got into the industry when she was 16 as a backing vocalist and eventually got a record deal with MCA, so I'm assuming the extra money and cars was either coming out of her advance or as extra expenses on the label's part.

Why is "Love Overboard" in the top 10? I mean, I had it top 15, but it beat out both Pebbles jams?! I'm surprised both Pebbles songs got cut, I thought we'd only lose one of those today. Right. Exactly. Lol I had the same debate with myself, but for me it's why I had it at #2 instead of #1.

Today's extra was his follow-up to "Wishing Well". It peaked at #2 on the soul chart and #4 on the Hot 100.

Pebbles should have definitely made into the top 10. Never thought it would have been Gladys Knight.

Sign Your Name - Terence Trent D'Arby
In case anyone is curious about the name change: D'Arby legally changed his name to Sananda Maitreya on October 4, 2001, explaining, "Terence Trent D'Arby was dead... he watched his suffering as he died a noble death. After intense pain I meditated for a new spirit, a new will, a new identity".Maitreya has said that his name change resulted from a series of dreams he had in 1995. Though the name does not have any religious significance, Maitreya explained that he understood it to mean "rebirth" in Sanskrit. However, the name does not mean "rebirth" in Sanskrit; sānanda means "possessed of happiness", while maitreya means "friendly, kind, loving, benevolent".

This song is OK, but not one of Michael's best, especially in a strong year like this.
With that said, does anybody else think the opening note to the song sounds eerie? It's actually my favorite part of the song.

This song is smoove as hell. I would rank it very high on this rankdown if it was included.

I don't consider "One More Try" to be a pop song. It's built around a church organ and a drum pattern. The production is fairly minimal when compared to the pop songs of that time period. Michael's vocal is clearly modeled after someone like Al Green.
