I thought last yearβs show was better, but thatβs probably because 2020 was a stronger year for music than 2021 (and I actually liked last yearβs outdoor setting - the MGM Grand is an underwhelming venue for a show like this). Other than Billie (excellent) and Justin (not so much), most of the performances were competent but unremarkable. I do think the overall production quality has improved substantially in recent years, thanks in part to the new producers.
Have not listened to Jon Batisteβs album. I tend not to like when low-profile records win in the Big 4, and I suspect he wouldnβt have won in a 5-nominee field. However, I thought his speech and performance were lovely. βLeave the Door Openβ is a good song, but the Bruno Big 4 wins - and his less-than-gracious personality - became tiresome about five years ago.
Not overly concerned that Billie went home without empty-handed tonight given her well-deserved recognition in 2020 and 2021. Iβm more annoyed for Lil Nas X, who at the very least should have taken Melodic Rap Performance from Kanye. Glad for Oliviaβs wins in BNA and Pop Vocal Album, and for Doja/SZA.

Happy for Doja and SZA. Also nice that Olivia got a few.
Kinda sad that LNX and Billie walked home empty but tbh Grammys are not a huge deal anymore.

Album of the Year - We Are It becomes yet another AOTY winner that lost in its genre category (Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons as well, maybe others). Looks like it's the 9th time it's happened (of winning albums that got a nom in their respective genre category).

If LL Cool J can be unremarkable for several years I think Trevor Noah can be allowed to be pleasantly uneventful next year too. Solid host.

How do you all rate Trevor Noah's performance? he's a good host, I think. unproblematic, has funny moments, likable personality. if they're going to have a comedian/late night tv personality host, doesn't really get much better than him.

He was fine by me. Likable, didn't hog the spotlight too much, kept it moving.

I love BTS but smsskskssksks Not "whoever the fuck you are" I'm not anti-BTS on principle, but they are barely deserving of a Billboard Music Award, let alone a Grammy. They were fortunate to be nominated at all.

How do you all rate Trevor Noah's performance? I felt that he was really awkward. It was like that time James Franco hosted the Oscars and he was toasted as fuq. It was just so out of place. I think he's a little better on The Daily Show because it's a different environment. I feel like he should be doing low budget porn instead. It would be a better fit.

I didn't realize Jon Batiste has already won an Oscar Best Original Score a few years ago.

What a different show this year was. The presentation looked different with the Grammys in Vegas but not as nice like before kinda made it look cheap like the MTV VMAs or IHeartradio Music Awards. Surprised that Olivia and Billie did not win AOTY award and losing to Stephen Colbert's House Band Guy.

I honestly had no idea who Jon Batiste was until tonight. I don't watch Stephen Colbert's show because I have personal problems with him that go back several years. I had no idea that's where he is from. I enjoyed his performance and I liked what I heard. I shall check out his music later in the week.

I thought the winners were pretty good this year, was happy that Jazmine, Olivia, Doja/SZA all won. Can't stand Bruno or Silk Sonic, he remains the music version of "Oscar bait" to me and I think he's overrated AF, but alas.
Didn't expect Jon Batiste to win AOTY. His performance came off like an explosion of Sesame Street and the Wiggles, but he seems very talented.
Most of the performances were meh. Billie's was among the best IMO, and I wish she had went home with something. Was kind of disappointed in Lil Nas X's performance - it felt messy and chaotic. The Bieber one may have been the most awkward of them all. He should've just stayed at that piano - when Daniel Caesar and Giveon joined him on the stage, it felt like all 3 didn't know where to go, and the latter two acted as if they were never on a stage before.
Olivia's performance was really good too; didn't know she could sing that well live.

Grammys begged Justin for months to perform (video below). He last attended in 2016. Didn't show up when Purpose was nominated for AOTY etc in 2017. They keep luring him with noms even Yummy got pop solo. Probably never attending again.

While John's performance was beautiful, I did kind of think this last night. I feel like he's becoming the new Tori Kelly "house band" thing where all he does is go to every award show or wherever and perform at every single one.

Is Bieber really that much of a draw that they need to beg him to come?

I certainly hope Bieber didn't attend because he felt he was owed something. He lost all of those awards fair and square. On top of that, the performance was outright bad.
His red carpet look was meme-worthy though, I'll give him that much.

If anyone is getting used for a draw it's BTS at this point.

Can post the clips but lazy I mean, people were bopping along to the song, which is good. I didn't have as much problem with Justin per se (though his singing got pretty lazy after he left the piano), but more so with Giveon and Caesar. They were both amateurs up there and the 3 of them acted like they hadn't rehearsed this at all.

I also didn't like how Trevor tried to say that it was a "concert with some awards" or whatever. No, the Grammys needs to get back to doing more awards. The amount of performances was too much.
