Nice to see Judas Priest representing hard rock/metal in the top 10, and I'm (pleasantly) surprised to see Alan Parsons make it all the way here. On the other hand, I can't believe Under Pressure bowed out before the top 15.
I love seeing "Caught Up In You" way out ahead as .38 Special's personal best; it's just one of those tracks where all of a band's musical virtues magically line up for one song. .38 Special really had the great blend of southern rock style and pop hooks going for them in the first few years of the '80s. It's a shame they started to disappear down the AOR rabbit hole as the decade went on.
I'm actually quite shocked Asia did as well as they did in this game. Their production values are way over-the-top, and their sound sound is a hybrid of two highly divisive genres - stadium rock and progressive rock. Despite all the potential cheese, they're still great hook writers in my opinion, and the instrumental work is a cut above average.

Oh for sure. I will eventually get to some more extras. Also some of these contestants I also covered in modern Rock, so I'll keep em short. 25. Abacab - GenesisIf you go back to all the rds I think I compare most Genesis songs to this one as their best ever. I said one day you will be surprised how high I rate this song. This song here is also a perfect example of me liking a song more and more each year. A little history: Originally a peak of #10 on my own 1982 charts, but for 8 weeks. #1 songs like "Centerfold" and "Eye of The Tiger" jumped over it, but were in and out quicker. I only had 20 positions on my chart back then, and "Abacab remained there for over twenty weeks. If I were to compile my YE based on Points this song would be in my YE top 10. I wasn't gonna put a certain song at #1 for a third time was I? Also this is by far my favorite Genesis song. especially that extended version. In short it's Genesis fire. The fact that most of the crowd gave this luke warm ranks proves it's a Doc Indie Party Rock proper #1 song. Btw this is what I meant when I first declared. "I already see my #1 song" 24. New World Man - RushThis is a great song. I tad below average for epic Rush, but enjoyable enough. A good example of a song I also peaked at #10, but was out in about a month. I know every one is waiting for the day I upgrade Rush into Top 10 territory. That day is coming soon. 23. Lunatic Fringe - Red RiderGreat song and my favorite from the band. 22. Vacation - The Go-Go'sFun Fun and even more fun, but the correct one prevails. 21. Shock the Monkey - Peter Gabrieleasy one for my top 40. 20. No One Like You - ScorpionsWhat a heavy Metal jam to upgrade here. The first song I remember hearing on the radio from this band was this one. That intro is pure power play. The no one like you woman theme in music always makes the guys sing with conviction. You can feel all the heart Klaus is pounding into those lyrics. An effortless journey to my top 10. This definitely makes sense. 19. Caught Up in You - .38 Special I think both mainstream and KLOS pretty much nailed it on choosing the top 10 rock songs of the year. Here is where i think they kinda dropped the ball. I have always ranked this band high on these rds. They just nail that Southern rock vibe perfectly. What I respect is that they not afraid to add a little pop vibe to the melodies. Don Barns has those flawless vocal tones. Clean, melodic, but powerful all at once. This song was my actual #7 song of my 1982 charts. Just one slot above "Open Arms". 18. We Got the Beat - The Go-Go'sThis is the most rock I heard this band get. Sounds even fiercer and faster live. That bass coupled with those drums nails 80's New Wave hard. This song is so great I never realized how short it really is. 17. Eminence Front - The Who I have no idea why this is such a favorite here by the forum's top rock forum posters? I think it's decent, but it never really opens fire you know?. I preferred "Athena", but for this band I'm for their 60 stuff like "My Generation"16 . Under Pressure - Queen & David BowieThis missing the top 10 feels like a bad dream. Some one ake me up. This song is a classic on every one's ones archives. The vocal fire between Bowie and Mercury is astounding, but what I always loved about this song is the versatility in melodies. It isn't your basic standard verse ,bridge, chorus. There is a lot of magic going on in this song. 15. Dirty Laundry - Don Henley This is ok. I never really blew a gasket over it , but it is enjoyable. FYI i peaked this song and Nickelback's cover of it around the same 21-25 range. I would have ranked "Johnny Can't read" way higher 14. Shake it Up - The CarsWhat did it get? 11 slots higher than Modern Rock? Great showing. I Wasn't gonna give this my #1 slot for their time, but it does hold it position as my favorite music video ever. Mainstream Rock chart also got this rank for the right. By the way just because we knocked off a huge pop cross over doesn't mean this RD is now officially not just one song away from becoming a pop cruise over RD. 13. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - The PoliceMelodic wonder form the the band, but my favorite. We will run into those on "Zenyatta Modatta". 12. Harden My Heart - QuarterflashClassic saxophone fire. Mellow but really hits the heart with female vocals. harden your heart and keep those heartbreakers out. I'm proobably one of them? My last call out Joe Jackson to appear? probably in vain tho? 11. Spirits in the Material World - The PoliceAsk me how I knew this slot would either be this or Judas Priest? Anyway this song is a perfect example how you add a little reggae magic to your music without it sounding hokey. You know who did it the best? The Cars on "Touch and Go" . I'm going to go ahead and say it. This is not the top 10 I would choose to represent album rock 1982. Not the songs themselves. They are great .and I charted every single one of them. Seven of them top 10. Aside from maybe 2 of these ,and 2 more really strong New wave fire. We went for a forest fore to a match. I like pop, but that is why there are different charts for different rock vibes. I will stick to my positive reviews of these ,cause they are all great, but I will touch on why I couldn't upgrade them more.**What I do love is that I'm kicking ass on the actual year end closeness. At least to this point. I'm sure I'm gonna proudly take the crown on that, because those were my actual drop dead favorites of the year. the ones that made up half my top 10 of 1982. J. Geils, Joan Jett, Cars, Cougar Mellencamp. It's the one year Mainstream ,and even pop charts got right. sorry DadJokes . Not this time bro.

Gonna reveal the rest of this one tonight. If you are wondering were "Working For The Weekend" was? It was originally released in 1981. Rock format like KLOS jumped on that one before 1982. As you can clearly tell this list was the soundtrack of my rock life. There is a lot of Doc +1 on this list. Even the modern rock represented here are my 80's favorites.
The KLOS Top 95 playback for 198225. Two Dayz Gone - Billy SquierFrom "Don't say No". Single only for the U.K. Great song.24. Precious Time - Pat BenatarBums me out when we don't rank one of my favorites from her. 23. Fantasy - Aldo Nova 22. Kids In America - Kim WildeAnother flawless Modern Rock jam representing.21. You Might Recall - Genesis20. Bringing On The Heartbreak - Def LeppardThe one song that was totally absent from the rank down. Would have been in my top 10. I think it was only a hit in England? 19. Destination Unknown - Missing Persons 18. Lonely Night - Bryan Adams 17. Harden My Heart - Quarterflash 16. Only Time Will Tell - Asia 15. Down Under - Men At Work 14. Lonely Is The Night - Billy Squier 13. I'll Fall In Love Again - Sammy Hagar 12. Showdown - Riot 11. No One Like You - Scorpionsand now for my top 10...er I mean the KLOS top 10. 10. Lucky Ones - LoverboyKLOS loved Loverboy! 09. Hold Me - Fleetwood Maceasily my favorite 80's Mac 08. Abacab - Genesis07. Caught Up In You - 38. Special06. Centerfold - J. Geils Band05. Eye Of The Tiger - Survivor04. Words - Missing PersonsThe absolute best song to represent Modern rock. The song was huge in the Los Angeles area. The Hot 100 didn't have a clue.03. Hurts So Good - John (Cougar) Mellencamp02. Heat Of The Moment - Asia01. I Love Rock n' Roll - Joan Jett and The BlackheartsWho ever thought #1 rock anthem ever would go to an ex Runaway.
There you have it. Sadly I don't have anymore, as my big waking up to music was at seven years old. but I would like to thank our host for bringing to my attention that Riot sang "Showdown". I had that space empty for years.

I had that space empty for years. Pretty much every Squier song on the Don't Say No album is a classic. I would really have a hard time if even half of his songs were in a rankdown. Lonely is the Night and In the Dark are full on masterpieces. Two Dayz Gone is also a great tune. Benatar's Precious Time is probably one of her top 3 songs of all time for me. Also surprised we didn't rank Shadows of the Night. And in a world where both Under Pressure and No One Like You BOTH missing the Top 10 of MAINSTREAM rock is inconceivable to me. I'm hoping the Priest can make it to at least #6 with one of the most definitive heavy metal classics of the 80's.. This is a perfectly fine Top 10 list. I think Gypsy has overstayed its welcome, but the others are all fine (mostly a bit poppy) group of songs. Looking forward to seeing the results!

Also surprised we didn't rank Shadows of the Night. We did, though. Its chart run on Billboard was mostly in 1983, so it qualified for that year instead of this one. 39

Thanks. I'm feeling like the big dummy. I know at some point (soon) we are going to run out of charts for at least modern and I'm thinking mainstream rock. IMO, some of the best music for some artists is still coming - i.e. Benatar in 79/80, the Police in 79/80, Squier in 81, Foreigner in 77/78/79. How much longer do we have a clear line in sight for mainstream rock charts?

{THE SET WHERE EVERYTHING FALLS APART HAS TO GET A WORD WALL}#25: Yeah, I was not expecting that to be Doc's #1. This isn't one of my favorite Genesis eras, really, but this song's good. #24: "Subdivisions" is better, that's why. I've always felt like this song should be better than it is. It's still really good, but it's like they're dipping their toes into being full synth, whereas I think "Subdivisions" is Rush fully realizing it. #23: I have a very special, personal place in my heart for this song, but, even if I didn't, I would still love this song. "Fun fact": This song was written about the growth of anti-Semetism in the 70's. Certainly puts the song into a whole new perspective once you learn that's what the song is about. #22: I...was not expecting this to be the lower one, but I'm happy the other one is higher. #21: This is weak for Gabriel...the key words being "for Gabriel". For most other standards, it's still really good. #20: This song is on the same album as "Dynamite", so...you probably know which one I'd rather see in this spot instead. I'm fairly sure that song would not have done as well as this one, though, so it's a wash. #19: Classic. #18: Those freaking drums, man. #17: If "You Better You Bet" tops this, I'm going to scream. #16: I fully expected this to make the top 10 5, though, honestly, I'm fine with it not being there. It would have been too obvious. #15: I like "The Boys of Summer" more, but this is pretty much the only other Henley solo song I remotely care for, so I'm fine with them being their two best performers. #14: Well, I was not expecting this to miss the top ten. #13: If nothing else, I just love that piano in the opening. (See? They DO have good big hits!) #12: Better on a re-listen and less like it's trying to sound like Pat Benetar. Good stuff. #11: Aw, I was rooting for this to make the top ten. I'm actually rooting for my lowest remaining over a couple of songs I ranked higher lol

Really cool that "Only the Lonely", "Eye in the Sky", and "Young Turks" were all able to make the top 10. I thought they'd be in contention but wasn't sure if any would be able to secure a spot. Also pleasantly surprised with Judas Priest making it as well. I'll be rooting for my #1 but I suspect it will come down to my #4 or #12 as the rankdown winner.

Holy hell it's doc online before 10:00 pm. I'm actually on my friend's p.c.. I've been trying to impress her by downloading some 80's fire for her playlist. We are gonna checkout some extras now. Also be warned I'm a bit drunk. My spelling might suck? You Remind Me - SheriffFirst time listen. Not even KLOS played this one. Maybe I've had one too many, but this sounds fierce. This is perfect. They kinda sound like Warrant ,and the band is called Sheriff. Who else hears a Tom Petty guitar hook burried in there? Thanx for this one. Easy top 50 which would be pretty high for first time listen. Download/check for sure. Showdown - RiotSo this is Riot's jam. Pretty good. I get some Nazareth vibes. Incan see Santana doing guitar on this and me ranking it way higher than "no Where To Run". This one came in pretty high on KLOS list. Love Leads to Madness - NazarethSpeaking of. I have heard this. Not a classic for me. It sounds like the De Metaliazation of 70's Nazareth. I guess they were trying too hard to fit in '82 album rock. IMOP They should have switched songs with Riot. Anyway for the first timers. Don't judge the band by this song. Just type in "Miss Misery" on youtube and thank me later. ;) Maxine - Mike RutherfordThat fact that Mike is going for some sure fire exposer on Spain's version of Solid Gold pretty much says it all. This is alright. Seems "Maxine" is the extended break of "Abacab". Just one big bass hook. Mike doesn't have a singing voice I can gel with. The best idea he had was hiring better vocal Mechanics. In Between the Lines - Michael Stanley BandFirst time listen. Seems this one is off the album with "He Can't Love You". That;s a perfsonal top 10 favoroite of mine. That sax gives this song Eddie Money vibes. His vocals sound way different, but I really like where the song goes with its chorus. Lyin' in a Bed of Fire - Little Steven & the Disciples of SoulI love that Al Pacino's band can make the same song over and over and still fail to impress me. It always feels like Little Streven got Bruce Springsteen hand- me -downs. I'll give it a thumbs up , cuz I can appreciate the musical composition. Especially the brass, bot no D/L. Get Closer - Linda RonstadtBlame it on female vocals, but I kinda dug this when it was around. Big Pop hit , right? I'm guessing this got Rock format exposure because of "How Do I Make You". That's the jam right there. Thought it was Pat Benatar years. I could have easily just ranked Oilvia newton-John on this list as well. Extars 2 :Talk Dirty - J ohn EntwistleDefinitely apt for this format. I get pulled in by hot Guitar hooks. I didn't get many Who vibes. The music structure sounds more ready made for a Joe Walsh solo album. The song rocks ,but doesn't bring much to the game. It also over plays the "Talk Dirty" line to death. Olympia - Jon AndersonAnother solo project. This time from Yes's vocal wonderboy. It's actually pretty entertaining. Turns down the Prog rock vibe for a bit more guitar fueled song. I enjoyed that. Never was the biggest fan of Jon's vocals. Unique, but not for me. They work on this song tho. It's Midnight and I'm Not Famous Yet - Jimmy BuffettThat's because you been eating too many of them Cheesburgers in paradise. LOL. This is actually pretty entertaining. I love the continuous synths in the background. Very Cars "Cruiser". Someone else stole the chorus melody from this song and made it famouser (is that a word?). Maybe from a Weezer song? White Noise - Jay Fergusonprobably the one I most identify from this set so far. It's loud ,and I love that drums intro. I don't even know who thas guy is, but this song could easily snatch a spot on "Heavy Metal' the animi wonder of 1981 which came out one day after my B-day BTW. One Night Stand - Janis JoplinNot all female rock wow's me. This is alright. Definitely has soul. Sounds way better for POp or better yet AAA. The Look in Your Eyes - Hughes & ThrallLoving the second singer's vocals. I can appreciate thos one as one of my favorite first listens for the sheer fact of cramming so many rock vibes into one song. You got Moody Blues, synths coupled with Sammy Hagar intro hooks. The second singer brings on the Whitesnake harder rock vibe, and even goes into a more poppier R ick Springfield like chorus. A trainwreck? maybe to some, but I dug it. Keeping Our Love Alive - Henry Paul Bandvaugly recalled this one. It's like Country with a bit of southern rock pop. It's pretty good. It's hard not to like at least one aspect of 80's melodic fire music. This is what Boston and Air Supply would sound like if they decided to cut an album together produced by Jeff Lynn. Still better than today's music.
