Your final 2. I Ran (So Far Away)Steppin' OutTale of the Tape:This was only the exact top 2 for 1 movement. These songs have a combined 17 top 10s, 10 being top 5s and 5 being #1s. 1 bottom 50 remains. No player has a chance to score a perfect top 2. Red is the closest, as he's down to his 1 and 3. gonecountry, Doc Indie Party Rock, Mirago, and thethirdcurry all did not put either of these songs in their top 10.

Other than Gypsy (ugh), the Top 10 was all fine. Priest was by far the most rocking song left and was thrilled to see it hit #3. I love Joe Jackson, but glad to not see him win a Mainstream Rock rankdown. He is so far from mainstream, IMO. Great rankdown, thanks@gatesofseattles!

Year-end Chart Closeness: Rankdown Closeness Perfect Rankings: Thanks everyone for joining us in taking care of this year! One thing I'm glad about is that this rankdown went the smoothest for me that it could've in a technical sense; that doesn't always happen for me, especially lately :/ If you're wondering where my jazz personal rankdown is...check back with me in late June. I might be ready to open it then.

Great seeing Parsons and Priest go high, and I'm fine with A Flock of Seagulls taking this one (though I would have personally preferred them taking the #1 with their other hit in alternative.)

The good thing her is I can sit back and watch the reveals without any stress. I'm out of Top 10s. I'll add my original chart peak next to the song. 10. Young Turks - Rod Stewart (peak #2) Love this one. One of my highest on Pop '82. Rod nails the story telling theme of the song. Love the poppy jumpy vibe and we even get a young E.G. Daley in the music video. I don't recall this one ever getting airplay on Rock format. The good thing is I can expect everyone to rank "Do Ya Thnk I'm Sexy" way up there with me for '79? 9. Tainted Love - Soft Cell ((peak #2) Another one of my New Wave favs of the 80's. Gimmi it for new Wave and POp, but no matter how hard I twisted and bent it I just couldn't get it to fit this rock list. Not even when KLOS played it. Ironically the thing I love about the song. The instrumental simplicity and Marc's in ecstasy tones ultimately brought my revved up mood down. Here is the thing. I never understood why certain songs get picked to cruise over to rock format? Or better yet why certain songs got more of a push. If I really wanted to push a song with this kinda vibe on the format I would have chosen Sparks "I Predict". More or less the same vibe, but with a little more umph. 8. Gypsy - Fleetwood Mac (peak #34) This is nice. With a very aesthetic atmosphere. I'm not really looking for that when I switch the radio station from KIQQ fm to KLOS. I can appreciate Stevie's vocal rock tones that are always present, but this ain't no "I Can't Wait" that's for sure. 7. Only the Lonely - The Motels (peak #9) Originally a #9 peak on my '82 charts, but i put this higher than both Soft Cell ,and Rod, because I enjoyed this one a lot more among this group of songs. It also got a decent amount of airplay on my chosen Rock stations. I thought if fit the format well, because of the power of Martha's vocals. She really belts those words. It also has a decent guitar solo. 6. Rock the Casbah - The Clash (peak #5) This one rocks proper. A little punk rock vibe is always welcome. 5. Eye in the Sky - The Alan Parsons Project (peak #25) I like this song. Maybe a bit too mellow at times. It has lost a little fire with me through the years, but it is still a pretty decent little pop song to boost. 4. Don't You Want Me - The Human League (peak #1) This will always be a favorite of mine. I was actually able to pull this one higher than a lot of '82 guitar fire, because it sits in my heart as one of my all time favorites of the 80's. The vocal duo of this band is at times hard to describe, but it takes me to other realms. This was also a #1 song of my '82 charts. I was kinda rooting for this one to win. 3. You've Got Another Thing Coming - Judas Priest (peak #18) I forgot this was still in the game. Way to go. I love the way this one revved up the charts. It bangs with the hooks and is quite possibly the most melodic they went. There is still "Livin After Midnight" which I absolutely love. 2. Steppin' Out - Joe Jackson (peak #28) I'm kinda glad this didn't win. It's a good song. I charted it ,and I do love that Piano progression, but honestly not a song I would rank above any of the hard rock staple songs on this list. Later I discovered "Is She Really Going Out With Him" when I was compiling my retro 1979 charts. Hope we get to rank that one. 1. I Ran (So Far Away) - A Flock of Seagulls (peak #4) Here is a great one for this list. ironically my rank was my actual YE slot as well. Always thought these guitars from this band had a vibe of running. Not motor revving, but running. I know the song is titled "I Ran", but this is a song that perfectly captures the running vibe, and I'm glad it ran to the top of this RD. also gonecountry You gotta speak for yourself. None of the songs listed were not rock. Some represented my rock style more than others, but that wasn't the reason I didn't put "Steppin' Out" in my top 10. One of the main reasons is that this song has never been one of my favorites period. In the 1983 Billboard RD we ranked I put it at #60. Hardly a song you will expect me to go top 10 with on this RD? The other more obvious reason is I'm always gonna root more for the harder/ faster guitar oriented songs on any genre. so I always felt more comfortable among the songs that performed best on the mainstream rock charts. At least in the 80's I did. Most of the time it's the louder/ Party vibe/anthem songs, but that's just the way I'm built. At least we get some variety from everyone's ranks. It be boring if every one just submitted the same list. singingrulebritanniaAnother great job at hosting. I'm happy to snag that year end chart closeness medal. I think it's my first. '82 was my year. Appreciate the extras videos and stats.

Extras:Nuclear Attack - Greg LakeHonestly I don't even like these two musicians all that much, but what fire is this that burns in front of me? Hardly what i expect from the Emerson,Lake and Palmer trio. Not complaining tho. This is probably the most up my alley he has sounded. I mean the spotlight are those Guitar licks. Bombs away. Dig the Asia synths towards the end. Never Had It Better - Franke and the KnockoutsThe fact you are familiar with Bon Jovi's drummer ,and I'm not is priceless. I remember this getting airplay on some light rock pop stations. Didn't expect a band with this name to sound like Jefferson Starship. I mean A number of these extras would perform well on any other RD they appeared without the tons of songs I already knew. I'm thinking I might overrank this on some random Lost 80's Rock songs Rank down. This really does channel Jefferson Starship. No Refuge - Eddie SchwartzI'm not feeling this guy's vocals. The song doesn't have a bad Cristopher Cross meets Huey Lewis and The News light rock 80's vibe. Not really my thing, but I'll take the Huey Lewis side of it. Animals Medley - David JohansenVocally a disaster, but I really dig that Doors like Psychedelic vibe. He sounds better when he adds the power to his vocals, but it is still the losing aspect for me to like this song better. Devil's Deck - Coney Hatchgave this one a quick preview last night and knew off hand it would turn out to be one of the top 5 extras I discovered on this RD. Really feeling the Britney Fox vibe here. Leave it to our host to show me up with 80's hair Metal I didn't know of til now. Damn this is good. A perfect example of a song I would probably give the highest rank it too .Gonna need a to reserve a night to check out this album. Download/check. Harder Than Diamond - Chubby CheckerI should know this artist, but I'm drawing a blank. This song isn't helping. Looked him up. "The Twist" really? this is pretty good. I'm getting Van Stephenson vibes with a Lionel Richie - Running With The Night moon rising. it has a nice melody, but kinda gets lost in all the other street attitude Pop rock songs of the year.

The bass line during the verses amuses me. It sounds like it's all over the place, and it sounds funny.
Fitting that this song ranks #11, since that was its peak position on the Billboard Hot 100.

{TOP TEN WORD WALL}#10: As far as I'm concerned, this is Rod's only noteworthy song after the 70's ended. Also, is "People Get Ready" a cover? Because I really, really hope it's not. #9: Shocked this isn't higher. I feel like this and "Shock the Monkey" are the two best examples of the gulf of quality between the rock chart rankdowns of 1982. #8: I was surprised people were surprised that this was still in. I thought this would be in the #1 conversation, so, if anything, I'm surprised it's out now. #7: I've always liked this, but the listen here may have finally gotten me completely on board with it. #6: Okay, my lowest remaining has topped the songs I mentioned before. I just hope they do similarly well again in 1981, though I'm not holding my breath there. #5: So proud of this song. Obviously, the best way to listen to it is to listen to this with "Sirius" before it, but it's just wonderful even without it. #4: I don't know why I expected this to get tanked more, we've established by now the gulf in quality between the two rankdowns. #3: Wow, was not prepared for this at all. I'm fine with it, but, honestly, if this were any other song on Screaming for Vengeance, it would have been in my top ten or higher.
Well, I think I know what's winning, but I can't complain either way here.
#2: Given that someone was always going to rank this song low, I'm still super glad it got this high here. #1: It's the obvious result, but almost any other result would have felt wrong, really. I do wish this was "Space Age" getting its just and deserved time in the winner's circle instead, though. singingrulebritannia, it goes without saying that you're one of the best at hosting. Take that well deserved break. You've earned it.

I know it's early to be asking this, but out of curiosity, how are the missing two months for 1981 going to be handled?
