“Pancho and Lefty” will forever and always be one of my favorite songs of all-time. My only regret is that it was years before I realized that Willie and Merle weren’t the original singers of the song, but I blame that on youth lol. Pleasantly surprised to see a Dwight Yoakam song make it into the top 40 as more than not his songs tend to be more on the polarizing side. It’s hard not to like “Guitars, Cadillacs” though! I’d love for there to be an artist rankdown for Dwight in the future, but I’m sure something like that is a long ways off. Having only ever grown up with Mary Chapin Carpenter’s version of “Passionate Kisses”, this was another song that I didn’t realize was a cover. I had a bit of a hard time ranking this one both for my affection of Mary’s version as well as the fact that this sounds a bit more along the lines of being alternative country rock. “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’” actually kind of underperformed to my expectations as I didn’t think it would be out quite yet. This should’ve been in everyone’s top 50! I do think that I'm gonna get a lot of flack for my lowest remaining song, which is my #80. Probably no more than my #90 ranking for “The Pill” . Do I love me some Loretta Lynn? Of course. Did I underrank “The Pill” some? Probably. Do I really have any desire to ever listen to this song? No, not really. Marty Robbins is another iconic artist that while I’ve always had immense respect for, I’ve only really ever been familiar with his biggest hits including “Singing the Blues”, “A White Sport Coat”, and “El Paso” which was featured here. I’ve long enjoyed this song, so I’m glad it was able to make it this far which was further than I thought it would’ve.

I think I'll get more flack for my #80 than you will for ranking "The Pill" at #90. I could see mine being a top 10 contender, if not top 5 lol

My comment Does this song popularize the use of "whippoorwill" in country music lyrics lol Seriously though this is much stronger "projecting emotion to scenery" song than Songs About Rain. You can feel Hank William's despair in his vocal. Like I said before this was bound to finish within top 20 until the last two lists came.

My comment You can see Brad Paisley's humor mirrored in Roger Miller's works, including this one with its observations. They are clever and real. I am surprised this is high considering it's kind of a novelty song.

at what I did to Hank Williams' trajectory. I'm sorry to the fans of that song! But it is literally sooooooo boring to me. The melody plods and goes absolutely nowhere, and to top it off the vocals are so thin and weak that they are borderline unlistenable to me. Sara Evans' recent cover was very very good, and even then I can barely listen to her version more than once every couple months because the melody is so mediocre. "King Of The Road" is one that I have always been a little bit annoyed by as well, but then when I listened to it for this rankdown I heard it with all new ears and fell in love with it! I guess maybe I had just heard snippets before and thought they were campy and annoying, but then when I heard the whole thing it came together marvelously!!

King of the Road is definitely one of a few classics that I have been enjoying even before I started following country music the way I do now. It stayed longer than I thought, so happy about that.

Wow fucking YIKES @ that Tammy Wynette classic being tanked to hell and back. Y'all should be ashamed of yourselves. This deserved top 10 MINIMUM. Smh.

I strongly prefer D-I-V-O-R-C-E over this. Still sad that it missed the top 30.

RS comment My comment My high rank is due to the chorus being very recognizable and the quite strong vocals. I understand the lyrics can be problematic though (As I have a single mom, the premise of this song basically didn't stand for me), but not to the level of feeling unbearable. This one has a slightly larger fluctuation during submission but it's still mainly between 20s and 30s, so it would make sense it ended up here. zack97 is the second-to-last person to lose last place rank.

My comment Love the premise of treasuring living in the moment whether good or bad. Pretty great dynamics as the song goes on too.

My comment This is a cute fun song, but weird that they chose a novelty track to represent George Strait here. (Also this is not his most famous song internationally, Amarillo By Morning is.) Did I mention this is the lower one of two songs that are tied in points?

My comment I can see why it is included here, but there are better "woman plotting revenge" songs, for example, some of Miranda Lambert songs (which are surprisingly not in the RS list). The trajectory is an amazing feat as it steadily climbed from close to bottom 10 to winning the tie and hence made in top 25 in the rankdown.

Blimey, I thought Carrie would easily be in the top 10! So powerful and iconic! As much as I enjoyed some song from Cry Pretty era, hoping her new materials to sound like this era.

My comment One of the songs that use "dance" as a metaphor of life. I like some of the melancholy pianos here but the chorus is a bit unexciting.

Garth was good back in these days, I guess. I just don't feel any attachment to him due to his recent materials being boring, except for Ask Me How I Know. Unless his music quality comes back to this era, I don't really wish to see him on Airplay Chart over some new singers.
