“Pancho and Lefty” will forever and always be one of my favorite songs of all-time. My only regret is that it was years before I realized that Willie and Merle weren’t the original singers of the song, but I blame that on youth lol. Pleasantly surprised to see a Dwight Yoakam song make it into the top 40 as more than not his songs tend to be more on the polarizing side. It’s hard not to like “Guitars, Cadillacs” though! I’d love for there to be an artist rankdown for Dwight in the future, but I’m sure something like that is a long ways off. Having only ever grown up with Mary Chapin Carpenter’s version of “Passionate Kisses”, this was another song that I didn’t realize was a cover. I had a bit of a hard time ranking this one both for my affection of Mary’s version as well as the fact that this sounds a bit more along the lines of being alternative country rock. “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’” actually kind of underperformed to my expectations as I didn’t think it would be out quite yet. This should’ve been in everyone’s top 50! Probably no more than my #90 ranking for “The Pill” . Do I love me some Loretta Lynn? Of course. Did I underrank “The Pill” some? Probably. Do I really have any desire to ever listen to this song? No, not really. Marty Robbins is another iconic artist that while I’ve always had immense respect for, I’ve only really ever been familiar with his biggest hits including “Singing the Blue”, “A White Sport Coat”, and “El Paso” which was featured here. I’ve long enjoyed this song, so I’m glad it was able to make it this far which was further than I thought it would’ve. I think I'll get more flack for my #80 than you will for ranking "The Pill" at #90. I could see mine being a top 10 contender, if not top 5 lol Knew it: Wow f**king YIKES @ that Tammy Wynette classic being tanked to hell and back. Y'all should be ashamed of yourselves. This deserved top 10 MINIMUM. Smh. I don't regret my ranking one bit for this song. It is a classic and a lot of times I'd rank it high based on that alone but with a lot of these songs being classics that fact didn't hold this song up for me. I get it is a classic but I also think it is a bit overrated tbh and the more I hear this song the less I like it

26. George Strait - All My Ex's Live in Texas (1987)
tim 47
tim we fixin' to throw some hands!!!! Considering that it tied in points with Carrie's "Before He Cheats", I'm kicking myself for not ranking this one a bit higher which would've allowed it to get into the top 25. As recordyear mentioned though, this is a bit of a novelty song and I had mixed feelings about it even being included in this list. Also, of all of George's hits this is one that due to overplay has worn on me the most. I mean, as a young boy I was familiar with this song even before I really knew who George Strait ever was. I wish they had included “Amarillo By Morning” as that seems to be a bit more fitting for a list such as this. Speaking of “Before He Cheats”, this is another that due to overplay has worn on me a bit over the years. While it is a signature hit of Carrie’s, this still seemed a bit out of place amongst everything else. Some of those lower rankings for “The Dance” are for mare egregious than my ranking for Loretta’s “The Pill” lol. I can understand the wrath that Pulse shades him with, but this is still one of his all-time best songs. I’m excited to see how this performs in the 1990 Country Rankdown (shameless plug hehe). Pleasantly surprised to see how well Glen’s “Wichita Lineman” performed! This is such a classic tune and one of his best. "Seven Year Ache" is such an earworm! This is one of my all-time favorite country songs from the 80s and is one that I still revisit now and again. While I’ve always loved ‘I Hope You Dance”, it still hasn’t reached the heights of some of the other songs here that I consider to be more iconic. This is a perfect example though of what made all of these songs so hard to rank against one another.

So I did a list the other night for myself before I started looking at the results, I'm a little heartbroken by some of these rankings tbh :(
I knew every song here except D.L. Menard's and grew up on all these classics as well as the modern stuff that was current. So even the oldest songs here still give me a ton of nostalgia.
My remaining 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 15, 18, 20, 33, 34, 35, 39, 41, 42, 49, 54, 56, 78, 88, 98
I also only disliked my #100 ("Mountain Music") from the list so it's not like I'd be mad so much. It's just some of the older classics really did deserve better.
Also "Springsteen" needs to be out like now. I like it well enough now but it didn't deserve to make the top half at all.

RS comment My comment First heard of this song in one of Grady Smith's videos, while I think the moral is true, sometimes I am not sure whether the writer thinks some of these things are really bad (especially, "shouldn't widow Jones be told to keep/Her window shades all pulled completely down", and the use of "Peyton Place"), which I feel is judgmental as others. This again wasn't supposed to end up in top 20. But the 2 top 2 rankings, including .indulgecountry 's #1, helped this one, and yes, 🌺CountryLineDancer 's tanking boosted this while bboat11 's ranking dropped this.
