Is it iconic? I know I'm no expert on older country music, but I've literally never heard this song or Bobbie Gentry. I didn't care for it though, so you're welcome 4. Reba McEntire - Fancy (1991) Written by: Bobbie GentryRS Rank: 82

This is also how I learned that Reba's "Fancy" is a cover! I'll have to look up Bobbie's version sometime.

Maybe this is a little basic but I would've ranked "Cowboy Take Me Away", "Not Ready To Make Nice", or "Travelin' Soldier" much higher than I did "Goodbye Earl". The lyrics are obviously great but the music was too plain imo

Yaaaaasssssss, Martina's modern classic vs. Dolly's golden classic is the iconic top 2 battle we deserved to see! Whichever one wins, we have been blessed

Most of the songs in this list were released before music videos were even a thing or when music videos were just standing on a stage singing with the camera on you. Ranking it low because of the music video -- which is very fun and part of the iconic charm of the song -- is an odd take.

Whichever one wins, we have been blessed That being said, Martina coming out with a victory here would be the perfect outcome. After the way the 1994 rankdown ended, she literally has an ax to grind! The redemption arc of snatching a Greatest Of All Time rankdown win would completely ameliorate the sting of losing a paltry year-end rankdown

"Jolene" is totally running away with this, but good on Martina for a strong #2 finish. 🤠

RS comment
My comment It is a really fun song, but the artificial break in one line and Natalie Maines' vocals are my slight nitpick. Looking at the trajectory graph though, it got lucky that the songs that were in front of this were tanked. It climbed up to be #3 despite no top rankings received. Yeah I totally was thinking of the video since it was posted above. I wouldn't quite call the production plain either, but that does make more sense than the video. I do prefer many of DXC other hits to "Earl" though I do see why it's become one of their signature hits.

Top 2 Dolly Parton - Jolenevs Martina McBride - Independence Day205 points vs 240 points SD 14.62418089 vs 15.94434766 Only one song got top half ranks only. 4 #1 ranks remain: fearlessarrow , BB🌕 , bboat11 , castleoblivion26 No one got a perfect top 2, but fearlessarrow still has #1 and #4, .indulgecountry and someguy still have #2 and #3. The trajectory could reveal everything so I decided not post it now.

I want to post my thoughts on the songs to be revealed in the top 10 so far, but I'm afraid I'll miss the finale if I get buried in a lot of words!

It's really interesting to me how 3 out of the top 4 in this rankdown of 'greatest country songs' were undeperformers on country radio. It just goes to show that radio certainly isn't the be all and end all of determining hits.

Good Golly, Miss Dolly done did it again!! You love to see it!! I almost ranked this as my #1 here just because I figured it would win, lol. But I do love it about equally with "Harper Valley PTA," but PTA is my favorite classic country jam. "Independence Day" is a great runner-up!

Lol why it is "did it again" when this song didn't win a rankdown before (I think)? And all Dolly Parton wins in rankdowns are her Christmas songs.

Even though I ranked "Independence Day" one spot higher, "Jolene" seems like a more fitting winner to this type of rankdown. Both are excellent though. The top 4 were all in my top 5, so I'm really happy with this finish.

The top 4 was my top 4, just in a different order. Same. I had both of these swapped by two spots, but in hindsight I would have to say that I underranked "Jolene" and regret not putting it in my top 10. It's the more fitting winner for sure.
