This song was ahead of it's time. It did not sound anything like what was being played on the radio when it was released. But with Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega, Edie Brickell, 10,000 Maniacs, & Indigo Girls on the way & then The Sundays, Sara McLachlan & other Lilith Fair artists of the 90s, this band (along with The Smiths & Dream Academy) foreshadowed the sound to come. Over the past few months, Spotify has finally added both their albums, so this is now available - thank the goddesses!

Back-to-back Sacremento bands! Some may have pigeonholed these guys as mere Depeche Mode copycats, but this single from 1994 transcended the band well beyond that. If it's the karaoke version you're after (you're not!) then Spotify has you covered, but the "real" version of this song & the rest of the album Trip are nowhere to be found on their service.

#08:  "Let's Go (Nothing For Me) - New Order



My inclusion of not only this song, but two of the band's side projects (Revenge & Other Two) in this rankdown should clue you into the fact that this is probably my favorite band EVER (although DM would be a very close second). And while Spotify does have all of NO's studio albums along with a few of their greatest hits collections, this song was originally from the Salvation! movie soundtrack back in 1988 in it's original instrumental form. It was released on the US version of The Best Of New Order in 1994 (this time with vocals), and as a standalone single a few months later in 1995. Finally, it was included in the extended deluxe version of the Low-Life album released in 2008, None of which are on Spotify.

For their last two albums (1999's Apple Venus & 2000's Wasp Star), this legendary band left Virgin to join indie label Cooking Vinyl. Sadly that is probably related to why these albums (& their subsequent singles) are nowhere on Spotify. Checkout "Easter Theater", "I'm The Man Who Murdered Love" & "Stupidly Happy" as other great missing tracks from these albums.

This band has only 2 albums on Spotify (1998's Come Clean & 2001's Gift)...but Pubic Fruit (a collection of early EPs), Doppelganger & Cuckoo, along with the singles included on them, are nowhere to be found on Spotify. Too bad as "Coast Is Clear", "Horror Head" & "Missing Link" are excellent songs that should be heard and enjoyed.

#05:  "Inside Out" - Mighty Lemon Drops



I've been pleasantly surprised at how many of the songs on this rankdown have finally appeared on Spotify - including this stellar tune right here. Their entire discography (including the album containing this song) have been added to Spotify US in the past month or two. This band scored 4 chart hits in the UK, but none made the Top 40 there. In fact this amazing song only managed to land at #74 in 1988. This was only a few months before Billboard added their Modern Rock chart, so they didn't even get a chance to chart there, but i'm guessing it would've made a run for #1 as I heard it all over college radio back then. And by the way, this British band's original name was The Sherbet Monsters.

#04:  "Electric Avenue" - Eddy Grant



I clearly remember where I was when I heard this song for the first time. I was in 9th grade & on a school bus trip to Washington DC. The local DC pop station was playing as we crossed the beltway into the DC area when my classmates & I were treated to this earworm that hadn't yet made it to Columbus radio yet. Spotify has several greatest hits compilation albums by Eddy, but shockingly NONE have any of his US chart hits (this which peaked at #2, "Romancing The Stone" or "I Don't Wanna Dance"). Most people think of this song as a one-hit wonder, but besides his 3 US charters, he also scored worldwide hits with "Do You Feel My Love" & "Gimme Hope Joanna", plus two songs from 1979, the #11 UK hit "Living On The Frontline" & the sleeper classic "Walking On Sunshine" (not the same as the Katrina & Waves hit).

This was the only song not to have any bottom half rankings, in fact, it had no bottom 30s! (so likely one of the lowest Standard Deviations - but i didn't calculate that).

#03:  "Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)" - Tears For Fears



Curt Smith left the band in 1991, and in 1992 the greatest hits collection Tears Roll Down (Greatest Hits 82-92) was released with this song as the only new song included. So this is the very first song from the Roland Orzabal only version of T4F. It hit #17 in the UK & #10 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart. Strangely enough, Spotify does have two alternate versions of this song as "Tears Roll Down" (both of which are instrumentals) on the Super Deluxe version of the Seeds Of Love album, but not the single version!

So that means De La Soul is our champ with their pioneering #34 1989 hit! Spotify has their three most recent albums, but not their first six. I would guess this is related to litigation over samples, but I really don't know for sure. This song is a certified classic and Spotify users deserve to hear it!

It's been mostly due to a contract dispute. Tommy Boy Records controlled the rights to that initial run of albums, and they wouldn't permit De La Soul ownership over their master tracks and would only agree to a streaming compensation structure that gave the group just 10% of profits. But now that Tommy Boy was sold to Reservoir last year, De La Soul owns their masters again.
