After taking their listeners into the Matrix (or the dark side), Missy and Timbaland decided to bring them back to the bright side with the third album Miss E... So Addictive. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and spawned four singles, "Get Ur Freak On", "One Minute Man", "Take Away" and "4 My People". Also, this album led to two Grammy wins for Best Rap Solo ("Get Ur Freak On") and Best Female Rap Solo Performance ("Scream a.k.a. Itchin").
I just remember being excited about this album. She had all of my favorite artists (and some newcomers). And I knew Timbaland was gonna supply Missy with some crazy ass beats based off “Get Ur Freak On” and “Lick Shots”. It ended up becoming my first from her even though it was edited.
Timbaland took R&B and Hip Hop in a global direction sonically by incorporating all these different genres and sounds. The album had bhangra, African jazz, electronica, Israeli folk, etc. There are a couple of bonus gospel tracks at the end. Missy referred to her influences Prince and Rick James on the singer-songwriter side.
The guest list was on-point. The album introduced Charlene “Tweet” Keys, who was then a hired background vocalist for the project, and Philly rapper Ms. Jade. Ludacris and Jay-Z play opposite roles on their respective versions of “One Minute Man”. Her homegirls Eve and Da Brat bodied their tracks. What’s a Missy album without a Busta Rhymes interlude?
Elektra released the follow up singles in remixed form. Trina made an unexpected guest appearance to “One Minute Man”. Missy reinvented “Take Away”, a duet with Ginuwine, to commemorate the loss of Aaliyah and by replacing Kameelah with Tweet on adlibs. The Bassment Jaxx remix of “4 My People” was embraced in the UK. If only they officially sent the original to radio.
The album made the summer of 2001 so much fun.
