Kicking off the extras is the first charted single by a trio from Indianapolis whose members included 2 older brothers of Babyface. This song peaked at #5 on the soul chart, but initially stalled at #74 on the Hot 100. It fared much better on that chart when it was re-released a year later, peaking at #19.

Today's extra was the first Top 40 hit on the soul chart for this rapper from NYC, peaking at #11. It was also his only song to top the rap chart.

Smooth Operator - Big Daddy Kane

Today's extra was the first #1 on the rap chart when it was introduced in 1989, staying there for 10 weeks. It's by a collection of rappers based on the East Coast encouraging the hip hop community to stop committing violent acts against each other. Rappers who participated include Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, and Public Enemy. In addition to topping the rap chart, the song also peaked at #30 on the soul chart. Proceeds, which totaled over $100,000 went to the National Urban League.

Next, the biggest hit by the man dubbed The Clown Prince Of Hip Hop. Interpolating the Freddie Scott song "(You) Got What I Need", it peaked at #37 soul and was his only Hot 100 entry, climbing to #9. Mario recorded an updated version in 2002 (with some notable differences), and Austin Mahone sampled it in 2012 for his song "Say You're Just a Friend".
