US Spotify - 05/23/21
131( +25) Mitski - Washing Machine Heart 240,925 ( -30,825) This is probably a tiktok thing but we love to see it! Probably Mitski's highest performing song, I assume. Would love to see her get some traction.

Based off the current state of the charts, I can see What You Know Bout Love, On Me, Back in Blood and Blinding Lights go recurrent.

Alternative Radio is playing Without You (top 10), and played Deathbed and Dance Monkey. Not sure if Good 4 U is being played at that format.
I think that's how it's determined when these songs are allocated a genre.

Not related to this week but I just think it's funny how Olivia blocked Ariana, Megan, and Doja with her first number one hit, and now blocked J. Cole, Morray, and 21 Savage with her second. Trios are not safe from license girl.

Don't think it's been brought up yet but this week is officially the start of Billboard's summer season so everyone get your predictions ready for what'll be the top songs of the summer. Unless a viral track somehow comes through, my money is on Good 4 U. Butter is also a possibility, but I'm not sure how long it's going to last near the top. By the way, does Billboard use inverse points or real points to calculate the SOTS race? Don't forget "Kiss Me More"! It's been holding up impressively well on streaming, and its radio is steadily rising. With "Planet Her" being released during the summer + additional live performances, I can definitely see it being another strong contender.

I think that's how it's determined when these songs are allocated a genre. Well, unless you're "Old Town Road" on country. Top 25 on Rock Airplay is when a song that wasn't already on the Hot Rock/Alt list gets put on unless the label specifically requests otherwise (e.g. Post Malone, to my continual frustration). Old Town Road only ever got to #50 on Country Airplay and fizzled out within a month, so if there was a similar fast-tracking system on that chart, it didn't get close to it.

Probably just my.life and pride.is.the.devil. Also, in thinking about it a bit more, WYKBL and On Me might go recurrent next week. I think they're more likely to remain where they are currently than slip below #50, but it could still happen. However, I think Back In Blood is a little too far away, and as I said before, I expect Blinding Lights to stablilize.

^You meant those two former ones won't fall below Blinding Lights assuming it survives, which it should with the BBMAs bump.

Olivia Rodrigo, the new stable princess π
I can see her album having multiple 100M+ stream weeks on the Billboard 200.

All but 3 tracks from Sour (Deja Vu, Drivers License & Hope Ur OK) had more streams yesterday than they did on Saturday. For most album bombs over the course of a week, even the ones from the biggest artists, that's really uncommon.
I wouldn't be surprised if we get a situation like with Pop Smoke's album last year where it's so popular that its later singles don't need to be spawned by being formally released but simply going viral in some way.

^You meant those two former ones won't fall below Blinding Lights assuming it survives, which it should with the BBMAs bump. Blinding Lights should be safe for weeks 77 and 78, based on the award shows (BBMAs and iHeartRadio). In fact, I can see it getting a major bump in week 78 based on the Friday boost from the iHeartRadio and the 2nd week drops from Oliviaβs album. One song that may (surprisingly) go recurrent is my exβs best friend. Maybe radio dropped it, but for some reason the song is getting large negative updates every day.

the quality of the songs on the top charts has really gone downhill since 2018 π Funny - I feel the exact opposite, with 2021 being a particularly strong year for mainstream music so far. The charts have been quite diverse genre-wise - the most since quite some time, with pop and rap thriving together, R&B and pop rock making a comeback, and country being able to score top 10 debuts. Of course, opinions are subjective, but I think the quality is there as well. Additionally, TikTok virality has added a welcome element of unpredictability to the charts, and I don't think songs like "Good Days" and "HEARTBREAK ANNIVERSARY" would have become hits without this development. For me, it's very exciting how the general public is having a bigger influence on what becomes popular, and this is reflected on our current batch of superstars - from Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish to Doja Cat and Olivia Rodrigo. Just my take on it, of course! π

Olivia is having incredible longevity with her album. Wouldn't be surprised if it knocked Blinding Lights out.

Nice For What Rockstar I Like It Sicko Mode All dominating the charts π It's a shame though the charts had more than the songs on top and in 2018, had Freaky Friday, Te Bote, FRIENDS, I'm Upset, and so much more shit

Nice For What Rockstar I Like It Sicko Mode All dominating the charts π I will agree that 2018 deserves more appreciation as a year for mainstream music, since these songs (+ "no tears left to cry", "Delicate", "Finesse", "Boo'd Up", and "Love Lies") are all great tunes. However, I do stand by my statement, since 2021 has produced equally strong hit songs, yet doesn't have the egregious lows of "FEFE", "Freaky Friday", and "SAD!". Don't worry, though, I think this sentiment of nostalgia seems mostly artist-driven, and Travis Scott, Drake, Cardi, and Post Malone are planning to release new projects this year.
