Intl hit Heat Waves finally gonna hit top 20. Deserved. Also fk radio & karens for M5's ridiculous continued success Of course, none of their 1970s female contemporaries even came close to that kind of longevity. Some things never change. Diana Ross still had some hits after Endless Love (and leaving Motown for RCA). She even had a Top 10 hit (Missing You) after 40. Including with The Supremes, Diana had hits pretty much every year from the early 1960s to the late 1980s. Also, Cher, who had hits as early as 1965, had a #1 hit (Believe) at age 52 in 1999.

So, looks like early predictions were off the mark on the #1 race. Butter appears to have sold upwards of 100k via D2C, while the predictions that have Good 4 U ahead had Butter under 90k including main outlets. wow we really lost AGAIN huh

Other stanbases may abuse the sales system from time to time but as far as I'm aware no other fanbase has such a dedicated sales farm scam going. Beyond disgusting.

Dionne Warwick impacted before Elton and Rod, and she had hits into the '80s with Deja Vu, Heartbreaker, and of course the #1 TWFAF.

Butter actually sold enough for another week at #1. Next week physical will ship so Butter will be 5x#1. Then Ed comes.

OMG, can the Army spend money on other important things besides buying the same copies all over again? At this point, Billboard is just pandering to the Army.

Intl hit Heat Waves finally gonna hit top 20. Deserved. Also fk radio & karens for M5's ridiculous continued success A generation ago, Elton John & Rod Stewart were getting major Pop hits FAR, FAR, FAR beyond their prime. EJ even held a consecutive number of years hitting the Top 40 record. Even when he FLOPPED (and he did), he still managed to slip in a hit. Rod Stewart also rarely missed a year during most of that same period. Of course, none of their 1970s female contemporaries even came close to that kind of longevity. Some things never change. Well. I disagree. Take a look at Madonna... started in 1983 and was having hits left and right for decades... her last top ten in 2012. Another case is Mariah Carey, she debuted in 1990 and lasted a couple of decades scoring major hits... name a male counterpart who had that longevity....

Including his time with *NSYNC, he had hits from the mid-1990s through the mid-2010s.

Do you remember this? One More Night - hated Gangnam Style - loved When OMN blocked Gangnam Style, the GP was mad at Maroon 5 (for blocking it) and Billboard (for not implementing streaming earlier). Harlem Shake - hated Thrift Shop - loved When Billboard finally implemented streaming, and Harlem Shake cut into Thrift Shop’s run, the GP was still mad. Some people even commented why couldn’t Billboard wait a few more weeks for the rule change. Harlem Shake was ALL over the place during its short run. It deserved to be #1. Not a great song but a really fun meme or whatever you want to call it associated with it.

Of course, none of their 1970s female contemporaries even came close to that kind of longevity. Some things never change. I should've phrased it better - I'm talking about consecutive years hits - with no significant gaps. That's Elton & Rod from 1970's - 1990s. You're absolutely right: for females, if you add Supremes, Diana Ross is probably the closest (1963 - 1984) - with only 1978 missing. If solo, it 1970-84 - similar to Olivia Newton-John, Dionne Warwick (except she was mostly hitless for most of the 1970s) and Aretha (had a hitless gap from 1976-1982). Cher had multiple huge gaps between hits. Longevity, yes. Consistent hit maker. Absolutely not. Cher had 1 Top 40 hit between 1974-1987. Cher had brief iconic eras 1965-67, 1971-74, 1987-91. She benefited from two disco hits extending her shelf life: 'Take Me Home' (1979) and 'Believe' (1999). She ridden the latter for 20+ years now.

Apologies for dumping at a dead horse at this point but the supposed #1 song in America right now was outstreamed this week by 8 tracks from a four week old album.

If Drake's label sent "Wants and Needs" to radio, had a music video prepared, and put it at the top of the tracklist once the album dropped later this Summer it could've had a chance at re-peaking #1....

He would have like 14 #1 hits to his name right now if he actually cared enough about timing some of his songs better/doing more to push them.

I’m not counting on this happening but god it’ll be really stupid if a song that’s spent the past month at #1 on US Spotify and getting around a million streams more than the #2 song per day only spends a week at #1

All underrated gems, which deserved to chart. 100%. Motown really botched the post-'Love Hangover' period starting with the 'Baby, It's Me' album release strategy - 'Your Love Is So Good For Me' should've been the 1st single. Then the bizarre and messy 'Ross (1978) outtakes release, which has those 3 excellent tracks. Of course, The Boss came out in 1979 and Diana was back.

I feel like after the whole year of mess I really care less and less about the hot 100 chart, like I was so frustrated and angry when dynamite stole 3 weeks of no.1 from WAP, but now I'm like whatever, good 4 u is the true no.1 song anyway.

The thing is, Dynamite was bigger in its first week and had better longevity than more than half of the #1's in 2020. Even if you think Dynamite stole those weeks at #1 from WAP, you also have to acknowledge that Dynamite lost a week at #1 because of Franchise. Either way you slice it, Dynamite was a legitimate #1.

Beautiful mistakes is gonna be higher than megan's new solo single this Monday XD...I don't know why but Megan's solo songs failed to be bigger than her collabs so far...the solo song Girls in the the hood wasn't even close to be as successful as savage feat. Beyonce...the same with the solo song 'body' after the huge success of WAP with cardi b..megan needs more time to find her audience...

I feel like this isn’t exactly fair… Beautiful Mistakes has both strong radio and an album boost this week, plus Savage was still already a huge hit as a solo song, Beyoncé’s remix was just what pushed it over the top

You’re really about to compare the success of a song that’s had 14 weeks to grow on radio with a song that came out a week ago? Not to mention they don’t even begin to appeal to the same demographic, quite the opposite actually.

The WAP vs Dynamite saga was probably the best thing about the 2020 charts, after a year of so many debuts at the top spot whether they were good, bad, memorable or forgettable, it was interesting to see two songs battle it out for the spot. I was personally rooting for Dynamite because WAP is garbage.
