"she sucks now" just because her songs doesn't do well on chart? But I mean it's kinda petty to do a tiktok like this to me. No, she "sucks" now because tbh 52 of the 54 songs released from this album put most people to sleep lol. I love her, but she's fooling herself if she thinks this album is in any way reasonating in the same way as her previous two projects. It's fine if she feels some sort of creative fulfillment, but I feel like she's milked the collaboration with her brother as much as possible and it's starting to bore people.

The album isn't out yet, who's to say it won't resonate with people or her fans. Once again, sometimes big singles don't determine success even for A-list popstars. Count the number of Top 10 singles from ARTPOP to Chromatica, all eras of hers still have fans and defenders. Much like Gaga, Billie has a following that will help her survive even when the singles don't stick. Her worldwide tour sold out in HOURS. Commercially and perhaps critically, she will be fine.

Yeah I agree that the new songs are less interesting than her previous works but I also think the fact that the recent singles didn't do well make some people dislike her somehow. It's not like she has ever seen constant single success anyway so it feels weird to me.

Maybe she'll be fine, sure. I think one hit single would be enough to shut down most haters. Regarding the part about the album not being out... we've heard one third of it. It may very well be representative of how it all sounds. The tour sold out, duh, she had the biggest album of 2019 and she couldn't finish her 2020 tour. This thing is selling based on her last album. Also, all the pop ladies have their pop stans that will defend eras no matter how s**tty they are. ARTPOP still sounds like sonic vomit to me but some people will give you 234 reasons why it's the best thing since music was invented lol. I've seen people try to defend Katy's Witness lmao as her most mature project and it to me still felt corny as hell but without the catchy hooks. Popularity doesn't equate quality, but when you're an A-List name, diminishing returns does mean that most people aren't finding quality in your stuff. (Or label mismanagement, like say, what happened with Lorde's Melodrama, but that's not the case with Billie).

I won't say I'm surprised by the commercial performance of her latest string of singles as I've always seen her as more of an album artist than a single artist but out of every single she's released off this album, the only song I've really enjoyed and keep coming back to, is Your Power. I don't skip My Future and Therefore I Am if they play from the shuffle list but Lost Cause and NDA did absolutely nothing for me.
Still, I think she'll be fine, regardless. Her fans are mostly teenagers so they'll overreact, whether it's to them not connecting to some of the singles or the singles not performing as well as they would have liked them to.
I remain hopeful that the remaining 11 songs she's yet to release will have some hidden gems that'll tie the whole album up together nicely.

(Or label mismanagement, like say, what happened with Lorde's Melodrama, but that's not the case with Billie). ...that's still two thirds of an album we haven't listened to. An album and its sequencing can also help people re-analyze their thoughts, I know my opinion can vary when listening to a song on its own vs. listening to it in context of the album. If it doesn't hit for you after listening to it fair but let's not jump to saying it won't resonate just because of underperforming singles. Also my point wasn't that stans will defend eras, my point was that having a cult of personality will help with longevity even with diminishing returns. Katy didn't have a strong enough following or personality so Witness and Smile flopped. Meanwhile Taylor and Gaga even in their weakest era's, had that magnetism.

Also I'm not saying there isn't a decline, there obviously is. I'm just saying it's not something to write essays about. Numerous acclaimed acts have one era that is never met again commercially. Linkin Park, Alanis Morrissette, Tears for Fears, twenty one pilots, Wu-Tang, Depeche Mode (arguably).

Feel like sometimes people forget Billie only had one Top 10 single with WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP (not counting everything i wanted which was tacked onto future releases) People have made this argument but it's not really the same thing. Billie was an up and coming artist who had a bunch of sleeper hits doing consistently well on streaming (she had nine songs on the Spotify US charts the day before her album dropped, she has two as of yesterday), they didn't peak well but they had great longevity which eventually culminated in her getting her first big smash hit with Bad Guy and another hit with Everything I Wanted. It's not like she was consistently flopping and then just randomly got two hits, this is her first release where the debuts are big but the longevity is terrible. If she wants to rebrand as an album artist then that's fine (though this album is hardly shaping up to be very good on that front either), but it's fair to say she's punching far below her weight commercially right now.

stopping the above conversation, does anyone in the bts fandom know what the order numbers are? Is PTD or Butter gonna take the number one? I have no idea what the order numbers are, but my gut tells me Butter is going to keep the #1 spot. Butter's streaming is significantly better this tracking week than the previous one, and PTD has been a disappointment.

I'm still planning on an all-BTS top 2, with Stay at #3. As for the order of the top 2, I'm not sure. It depends on whether Army really only wants the top 2 for themselves no matter what, or if they truly want to be the first K-pop act to replace themselves at #1 on the Hot 100.
Either way, BTS controls their own destiny this week, in a way that Stay, Good 4 U, etc. simply can't. It's unfortunate, but I've accepted that it is what it is until Army (and Columbia) ultimately decide to let it go.

Uh oh Looks like Butter is blocking Permission to Dance as well I thought TOTC said this weekend that Butter was expected to remain #1? They might have been referring to the 7/17 chart though, not sure on that. Anyway, it's been said before that Army is easily confused when given more than one assignment. PTD will have virtually no airplay to work with and the streams won't be that much higher than Butter's, so the fans would have to buy far more copies of PTD to get it to #1 than Butter needs to stay at #1. We already know it's not impossible for them to do, but figuring out the necessary PTD:Butter buying ratio is probably too much math for them to sort out, so we'll just get both songs being spam-bought enough to get PTD in at #2.
