The sanctimonious critique of this song here is, with perfect irony, the exact reason that the song exists and why its themes resonate with a sizeable chunk of (if not the country) the country music audience. I find the overall sound and sincerity to be appealing but the lyrics to lack polish; I could take or leave the message more generally, but the reference to retaining confederate statues is really quite incongruous and unfortunate. Still, it would have been nice to see commenters less eager to use a song to launch into a full frontal assault on 50% of the American population, and the 50% from which the majority of country music fans is drawn. “You’re not tolerant to my intolerance.” Get out of here with that both sides BS.

I have some vocabulary choices I could use but I don’t want to get banned. You really don’t find it ironic that you’re using sanctimonious when this whole song is talking about how if you don’t like it here to get the eff out. That if you’re different than you don’t belong. I just can’t.

In any case, my central point is a good one whether it irks you or not: the fact that the release of country song is subject to scathing leftist critique, and is extrapolated to reflect poorly on the values and beliefs of the majority of country music listeners, is EXACTLY why this song exists to begin with.

Sorry people's comments touched a nerve. Some people find it scary to live in a world where things that used to be okay or commonplace are now getting pushback. The world is changing and I guess for some people it's scary. Realizing you're on the wrong side of history must be frightening. Also, just because, "half the country" or "most of the country music listeners," agree on something doesn't make it right. 100 years ago most people thought slavery was okay. That doesn't mean it was.

Firstly, I'd imagine most critiquing this song's subject matter are liberals, not leftists. Second, I'd like to believe a lot of country music listeners (and even conservatives in general), actually progressed and don't carry the same sort of talking points like "if you don't like it, leave" or defend glorification of those who sought to keep slaves. And given the frontloadedness, not a lot of them are actually interested in this sort of song.

And all over a few innocuous comments about a mediocre country song. Imagine existing in an echo chamber where one applauds like a seal every time one's well programmed peers parrot the party line -- how dulled one must be. But as long as you go to sleep safe in the knowledge that you are objectively "right" about everything, and that anyone who disagrees is "on the wrong side of history", I'm sure you find comfort. I truly marvel at the ability of someone, who rejects the characterization of their commentary as sanctimonious, who turns around and announces that they are "right" and that all naysayers are "on the wrong side of history" and akin to supporters of slavery -- all in comments about a flippin' country song. I will let you all have the last word here and hope to engage in less bizarre discussion with you on future threads. Have a great weekend!

Imagine existing in an echo chamber where one applauds like a seal every time one's well programmed peers parrot the party line -- how dulled one must be. I could talk about the concept of political parties and their labels are just that, labels, and their ideologies have changed as time had gone on. Unless you think the South just all of sudden decided to switch parties at the same time. Because the south used to be heavily Democrat. So what's more likely? That everyone in the south switched ideologies and/or moved, or that the parties more or less shifted? Why are white supremacists heavily associated with the Republican party more than Democrats? Why are Republicans repeatedly defending Confederates, who sought to keep slaves if modern Republicans are the party of the ones who freed them? You talk about "well-programmed peers" as if the genre isn't often full of conservative stars, whereas acts that are possibly more liberal keep their music mostly apolitical and inoffensive. I have no problem with songs like these inherently. At least there's passion in Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue" and it's broad enough he's not upset over the take down of statues of slave owners. And it's just a much better song than one that can be summed up as "old man who pretends he's a Southern boy yells at TV". Also it's laughable to come at Springsteen and make this in response.

Lmfao just think about all this for a second. The human brain is quite possibly the most complicated biological phenomena in our entire universe. Our early ancestors used it to both hunt and hide from creatures who were much bigger, faster, stronger, and toothier than they were. They were able to identify diseases, and then invent cooking methods and medicines that helped us stave off said diseases. They created complicated social structures. They taught their knowledge to their offspring. And over millions of years and lots and lots of generations, the species got even smarter. We created math out of thin air to help us logically understand and describe and predict the way that the universe works. We invented building materials and heating and cooling technology that have rendered us impervious to just about every possible weather system that we could ever encounter across the globe. We have explored via boat, submarine, car, and even plane and mapped the entire surface of our planet. We have made it so that the vast majority of our species will never even SEE a predator in real life, unless they get to see one for fun in a cage. We have been to SPACE!!
Finally, 100,000ish years after the evolution of the modern human brain shape, we have an individual who comes onto the internet, and tells a bunch of "liberals" that they are just butthurt former slave owners because they dislike a song from a guy who is angry that statues of the former slave owners are being torn down. I s**t you not!
Millions of years of evolution. For this conversation to even be possible. How embarrassing.
Let me phrase it another way. Imagine God puts the most complicated biological component of his entire Creation inside your head...and then you see a man who is angry that statues of slave owners are being torn down...and then you sympathize with that guy so completely and deeply that you decide to use your God-given gift to tell the people who disagree with that man that they are just disgruntled former slave owners! All because of a song that you even already said that you are not necessarily a big fan of...
Tell me your secrets, oh Wise One! I want to hear more about how the people who think Aaron Lewis is a big fat crybaby are just butthurt former slave owners, while Aaron Lewis himself is not on the side of the enslavers by advocating for their statues to remain up!
Anyway, I hate politics. It leads to nothing but polarization and causes good people to say and do bad things. So let's step back and assess this song from a more objective lens. Angry Lewis is angry because he's the only one who supports the military, and supports the flag, and supports the teaching of history, and worries about his kids, and blah blah blah blah blah. And THAT is why this song is f**king stupid. The idea that only Conservatives care about the military, the flag, the children, etc. is a MYTH!!! When a rich white person gets their panties so up in a bunch that they feel like their entire way of life is threatened because nobody loves the flag anymore, that threat is 100% inside their own head. That's where Awrong Lewis deserves criticism.
And how is a "liberal" who loves their country and wants to see it be a more welcoming, less hateful place supposed to take this song? This old man is screaming and shaking his fists about how he can't possibly be the only one who worries about his children, and we're like "literally all of us feel that way, so what are you even mad about bro?" We ALL want our flag to mean something. All songs like this do are divide us and make us hate each other.
THAT'S why this song is stupid. And the personal insults are not welcome here.

The same people who are praising this song and making fun of how "triggered" the liberals are are the same people who try to tell me that my marriage is invalid because I'm a man married to another man. These are the same people that don't think that my husband and I should have been allowed to adopt our beautiful baby boy last year. These are the same people who will watch a black man do exactly as he is told to do just to still be shot by the police and shrug and say "Maybe he should have...." These are the same people who watch kids get shot and killed in school and don't give a damn. I don't want to live in an echo chamber, but don't you dare sit there and act like liberals are fragile little snowflakes that can't handle differing opinions when the opposing side is literally trying to take our rights away and destroy our lives if we're not straight, white Christian.

I don’t think I’ll ever listen to Staind again. Or at least whatever song I found decent from them. These people are walking f**king jokes in society. Like this is basically just some washed up musician throwing a tantrum over statues, like the rest of them. And the fact this debuted in the top 20 alone is laughable. Like we really do love glorifying and giving voices to these god damn man-children who refuse to move on from their damn bubbles. And it doesn’t help that Aaron Lewis is yet another walking caricature like a shit ton of them, with all his Blue cop flag hats and Flag tattoos, he might as well sleep with the damn flag, like you cannot make this shit up.
I will never understand how liberals are viewed as targets when these people make it SO DAMN EASY.

Well to be fair, they have utilized their own symbolic gestures as well which has opened them up to criticism. For example, kneeling respectfully for the national anthem in solidarity with those who have been subject to systemic racism rather than standing there gazing longingly towards the flag with their hand over their heart and a tear in their eye like our nationalist propaganda machine has always told them is the only way to show respect towards our country/soldiers/flag. You can totally see why people who have never faced oppression in their entire life would feel like it's the end of the world!!!

I don't think it was intended to be very respect ful though... David Dorn definitely deserves better than whatever this attempt at a "gotcha" moment was. Unfortunately, Aaron Lewis would have an aneurysm if people tried to kneel for David Dorn too.

I think the simple fact that separates progressive/liberal protest songs and conservative ones is that when progressive protest songs get big, they get awards because they sound like this:
We just some products of our environment How the fuck they gon' blame us? You can't fight fire with fire I know, but at least we can turn up the flames some Every colored person ain't dumb and all whites not racist I be judging by the mind and heart, I ain't really into faces Fucked up, the way that we livin' is not getting better You gotta know how to survive Crazy, I had to tell all of my loved ones To carry a gun when they going outside
Meanwhile when conservatives right protest songs, it sounds like this:
Am I the only one who quits singin' along Every time they play a Springsteen song?

As far as the actual song goes the riff is nice, but it’s not strong enough to do what it’s designed to do and carry the song from start to finish. I’m not familiar with Lewis, but he sounds like Chad Kroeger if his tone came from too many cowboy killers. Pleasant tone aside (yes, I have issues) there’s nothing impressive about it vocally. Lyrically, it’s bloated and sounds like a compilation of Parler posts rewritten to be just a bit more subtle, kinda. I wouldn’t call that a success, but they tried. It’s repetitive, unoriginal, and wordy. From a technical standpoint this isn’t even a good song. It’s barely a listenable one.
The only reason it’s done as well as it has is because ‘Murrica protest streams, but “America, FUCK YEAH” exists and does its job much better. I’d call it a cash grab targeted at people with a victim complex, but they couldn’t even get it out before July 4th to maximize impact. Between the lack on any discernible qualities and bare-minimum marketing effort, yeah, I guess you could call that triggering in the same way I wouldn’t want to listen to a literal dumbass preach to me about his political opinions whether they align with mine or not.
Put more simply: this song ain’t it and there are better hills to die on, but if you’re the type to even attempt to do it here the by all means do not let me stop you. Anyway let me go give “Get Along” a spin.
