First off I'd like to once again thank everyone who has supported or participated in this series. When I started my first rankdown I wasn't sure if there would be much interest (I would have been happy if even a few people took part) but time and time again you guys have been here (a lot of you from the beginning), and I truly appreciate that. Now, over the the past year you've ranked all 231 #1 soul songs of the '80s. This time we're only doing the best of the best. I've pulled the top 5 songs from each year for a total of 50 songs, making it the biggest rankdown I've ever done. And here they are: Rock With You - Michael Jackson Upside Down - Diana Ross And The Beat Goes On - The Whispers Take Your Time (Do It Right) - The S.O.S. Band Celebration - Kool & The Gang Let's Groove - Earth, Wind & Fire Never Too Much - Luther Vandross Give It To Me Baby - Rick James Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me) - The Gap Band Fantastic Voyage - Lakeside Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) - Hall & Oates Love Come Down - Evelyn "Champagne" King Let It Whip - The Dazz Band Early In The Morning - The Gap Band Billie Jean - Michael Jackson Ain't Nobody - Rufus & Chaka Khan Beat It - Michael Jackson Juicy Fruit - Mtume She Works Hard For The Money - Donna Summer I Feel For You - Chaka Khan When Doves Cry - Prince Let's Go Crazy - Prince & The Revolution Let's Hear It For The Boy - Deniece Williams Operator - Midnight Star Saving All My Love For You - Whitney Houston Freeway Of Love - Aretha Franklin You Give Good Love - Whitney Houston Missing You - Diana Ross Oh Sheila - Ready For The World Kiss - Prince & The Revolution How Will I Know - Whitney Houston What Have You Done For Me Lately - Janet Jackson Nasty - Janet Jackson On My Own - Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald Control - Janet Jackson The Pleasure Principle - Janet Jackson The Way You Make Me Feel - Michael Jackson Looking For a New Love - Jody Watley Rock Steady - The Whispers Man In The Mirror - Michael Jackson The Way You Love Me - Karyn White Giving You The Best That I Got - Anita Baker Nite And Day - Al B. Today's extra comes to us from a singer who got his start with his siblings as a member of The Five Stairsteps. His biggest solo hit peaked at #63 on the soul chart in 1982 and has been sampled numerous times by artists like Doug E. Fresh and Mary J. Blige. Its bass line clearly inspired that of the Mary Jane Girls song "All Night Long".

Today's extra is a song that was written by Johnny Burke with the music composed by Jimmy Van Heusen. Two versions charted at the same time in 1940: one by Glenn Miller and his orchestra and one by Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra. Both versions made Billboard's Best Seller chart. Over four decades later, this singer recorded her own version, taking it to #13 on the soul chart in 1987.
