ngl, I was kind of hoping that "Don't Get Me Wrong" would hold up as part of a tie for best Alt performer for Pretenders, but I guess you can't really go wrong with this, either.

There are few OMD songs that I love, and I wouldn't say this is one of them, but it's grown on me a bit from Rock Madness.

Call me deaf but it's only recently come to my attention how awesome the bassline is on "Enola Gay"

still stand by my review from Last Stand Gates: "Hmm, I do like seeing OMD among the artists represented in this category, but I have to admit I would've rather seen a handful of their other songs over this (like, say, "Souvenir" or "Maid of Orleans"). Being the opening song of their sophomore effort, you can certainly detect the talent and innovation that they would refine in later eras. My favorite part of the song is probably the drumming; it's so fast and crisp with a unique and tasty rhythmic pattern to it. In general I'm a fan of early electronic sounds so tonally the stage is set well, though admittedly bands like Kraftwerk had a better handle on their technology, and earlier. But unfortunately, you can also tell they haven't had much practice in terms of songwriting yet. Melodically, there's just not much to chew on. It's pretty simplistic and it doesn't evolve much throughout the song either. And lyrics-wise, well, the subject (atomic bombs) and the concept of their construction (with the double meanings and such) is admirable. But while I'm actually listening to the song, all that stands out are the lazy "yesterday-someday-way-today-away" rhymes. It's not all that juicy stylistically, is what I'm saying. I'm also not sure about the decision to build this song to rely as much on a robust McCluskey vocal performance in this early period for the band--he couldn't carry that weight yet." (6.2)

I was going to talk about this song, how it's had such a huge impact on me and my taste in music, and how it still blows me away every time I listen to it, despite listening to it hundreds of times...but, I'm sorry, WHERE did you rank this, Doc?

The fact that it has to settle for a tie with "Big Time" wrong. wrong. wrong. This is in a completely different class than Big Time.

Technically my second-lowest remaining, and I was still rooting for it to make the top ten over a couple of songs that did.
Sorry, gates.

So, not only do two of The Cure and Joy Division's most overrated songs make the top 10, but the annoying-ass cult of Floyd is appeased too. How predictable.
