Just as we surpassed the limitations of Billboard Magazine to enter the 80s college rock era, so too do we break free from the publication's shackles to cover the heyday of 70s album oriented rock radio. Which is a long way of saying: it's time for the full Radio & Records years of the Mainstream Rock rankdowns. The biggest difference in the methods used to compile these charts, is that they were more album charts than song charts--the amount of play an album got altogether contributed to its ranking, while the order of prominence of each song getting play was a subheader. This means that songs by one band from the same album couldn't chart separately at the same time, which can lead to glaring omissions that you may notice if you have a keen eye. This is the best we can do, though--other publications that did use song charts aren't archived close to half as well as R&R is. Despite these inherent flaws, we still manage to rank 37 crossovers from the Hot 100 or Alternative here. So you won't be totally lost in this playlist, I promise.

Even though there's an 8 in the tens digit, 1980 doesn't feel like the first year of the 80s as much as it feels like the last year of the 70s. To begin with, this is the first year entirely without the presence of MTV, so song visuals from here on out will be either unrefined or non-existent. We're either getting very close to or arriving at the artistic peaks of bands who were previously heard resting on their laurels. Some bands who were languishing in extras land forever (like Molly Hatchet) finally debut. As well, popular bands from the decade are seen here reflecting on their influences or their back catalog in the form of covers or live versions. Another theme is bands in the process of lineup changes, or are soon to break up, corresponding with solo careers starting or getting more serious. Electronic/digital instrumentation is mostly just a glint in the eyes of these musicians, aside from a few pioneering standouts that pointed toward the wave of the future.

Programming Note: I decided to remove two songs that were in the 'official' top 100, so the #99 and #100 here were actually the #101 and #102. What were the two cuts, then? #14 was originally a live version of Eric Clapton's "Cocaine" cover from the Just One Night album. This was dropped because we will be ranking the studio version from Slowhand in 1978. #90 was originally Whitesnake's "Fool For Your Loving" from the studio album Ready an' Willing. This received the axe because we previously ranked the studio re-recording from Slip Of The Tongue in 1990.

Great list. Some real diversity, I know a good 60 of these and I'm sure some others as well. Some great rockers, some real fun ditties and the Christopher Cross tune is markedly better than 81's entry.

One of Queens biggest hits of the year. One I never particularly cared for, but they say I have to play it. Something like that.

Anyway I already see my #1 song of the year.

Just sent my list. This is the first time I really felt like the difference in quality between Modern and Mainstream was this noticable.

Also I hope that with Modern Rock ending we see early alt get represented here, but with AOR and Progressive Rock at their commercial peaks in the late 70s I'll keep my hopes low.

1980 Radio & Records Mainstream Rock charted 371 songs (not counting "Cocaine" and "Fool For Your Loving"), which means 271 are extras. That's a pretty unwieldy number, so here's how I'm dealing with the extras. peacebone has gathered the Spotify (or YouTube if there's no Spotify link) numbers for every song outside the top 100. I'm not posting songs in categories this year like I have for past rankdowns. I'll just post them in ascending order of year-end position. But here's where the curation comes in.
1. The 40 most popular extras will be posted during reveals.
2. The pre-reveal extras will consist of the rest of the 100 most popular extras, the rest of the top 101-200 of the year-end, the rest of the crossovers from the 1980 Alt top 100, and anything else that peaked in the top 10 of the weekly chart.

Not a lot that I recognize in this first list of extras.   There are two songs that are on my playlists.  The Jags "Back of My Hand" is a great power pop song.   Went to #17UK, #84 US.  Fun tune from a good debut album.





Also, "If You Think You Know How To Love Me" from Pat Benatar's debut album is a great remake of the 1975 Smokey hit (which was a good sized hit in Europe).  Pat's first album had a lot of great material.

"Too Late" by Shoes was one of the first music videos shown on MTV. More specifically, it was the 24th video shown on opening day (23rd if you don't count one video that cut out due to technical issues.) MTV's debut was kind to Shoes in general really - they had four videos aired in the first 24 hours, the others being "Tomorrow Night," "Cruel You," and "In My Arms Again."

Really like "Long Gone", but I've loved everything I've heard from The Outlaws, so take that with a grain of salt.

"Careful" is fine, but I like "Danger" and especially "Cry Baby" more from that Motels album.

"Heatstrokes" reminds me a lot of Bon Scott-era AC/DC, you might like that one. The riffs on the song are killer.

A relatively noteworthy set here. For some reason, 4 of the 11 songs on The Blues Brothers soundtrack aren't available on Spotify, and "Jailhouse Rock" is one of them. We also have: Head Games' third single, peaking at #41 in America; a Hot 100 #8 and top 50 on the year-end chart (finished #59 in the Hot 100 rankdown); Phoenix's fourth and last single which peaked at #21 on the Hot 100; and a landmark quirky cover of Barrett Strong that hit #50 on the Hot 100 and #22 on the Dance chart.

Chart runs like "OFF-9-OFF", while still not being very common, are always a possibility when you harvest an album chart as if it is a song chart. If you want a recent example that illustrates how it happens, look no further than the case of "Once In A Lifetime" by All Time Low on Alternative right now. With the modern system, it just went recurrent on the 8/21 chart after logging 20 weeks with a normal rise and fall. But if the same scenario occurred in this system, "Once In A Lifetime" would've only received credit for weeks it spent above All Time Low's other charter "Monsters". Which means it would've entered at #5 on the 6/5 chart and went 5-5-5-5-5-6-6-OFF on the 7/24 chart. Remember "These Are My Friends" by Lovelytheband? That wouldn't have received any charting credit at all because it was never higher than "Broken".

With that explanation out of the way, let's look at: the title track from "Snortin' Whiskey"'s parent album; a live version of the opener to Crime of the Century; the Live Rust version of the song that we're going to rank next year; the US #84-peaking third single from Eat to the Beat; and Def Leppard's debut single.
