I like the production, but has there been any conversation/controversy over how many Bruno Mars songs are about him admiring women as objects? Do women have any agency in his songs? Country music has deservedly received criticism over 'bro country,' and Bruno essentially sings about the same things. Well, if you know anything about Bruno's music, you should know that is literally the exact opposite of what he stands for. He literally has songs like JTWYA and WIWYM for a reason

It’s not objectifying, but I don’t really like how he says “girl,” in every single one of his songs

If Bruno of all people objectifies women than so do his darker peers like The Weeknd..........
Why is this even a topic??? That's got to be the biggest reach I've ever seen.

These numbers just prove that this song is nothing more than an album filler - not the 2nd single to a highly anticipated project. Thats what Im talking about, soon this mediocrity will hit the brick wall and then they have to bring out the real banger for Christmas(it cannot be another ballad) or the hype has left through the open door skating on ice. It looks to me that LTDO was one single project and after it surprisingly went massive they had to start planning the whole album. Now here's the real challenge! Whether it performs well or not, I have a feeling that you want Bruno to fail just because you don't like his new sound, or maybe you like Paak more (idk). I'm not saying you can't be realistic, but being this overly pessimistic about Bruno is rather weird to me.

Chris Brown had a Top 10 hit last year/the beginning of this year, let's focus on real issues before we come after fucking Bruno Mars for alleged misogyny.

I think they were just offering that lyrically (aside from “When I Was Your Man,” which technically takes place after they broke up and he’s apologizing for not being better . . .), there really isn’t one Bruno “love / relationship” single where he’s not specifically and only talking about how beautiful the woman is physically/appearance-wise. I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing, but it is a true observation.

Still waiting for a woman’s perspective tho. Maybe Bruno is not that much of a lady's man he tries hard to project himself, otherwise he would go deeper into woman’s perspective. Or in other words it might be difficult sometimes to reveal your real feelings. I hardly pay any attention to song's lyrics, otherwise I would not listen to music at all, mostly the words are to support the melody, usually there is almost zero intelligence in there. I mean it is hard to believe The Weeknd as well what really takes his breath away...

Just the Way You Are objectifies women. I've really heard it all now... Please point me to the lyrics in the song that portray her as an actual human, not an object. Might as well cancel 3/4 of R&B songs if lustful lyrics are unacceptable... It's about the collective, not one song. I asked for examples of Bruno Mars songs where he describes women as actual people with points of view and personality. So far no one has provided one (or more). He literally has songs like JTWYA and WIWYM for a reason In "JTWYA" he doesn't really say anything about the woman as a person does he? As I've already said, each part is about a physical attribute. He is literally singing how he loves her as an object of desire the way she is. It's also about how she basically depends on him to praise her because she isn't confidence in herself. Chris Brown had a Top 10 hit last year/the beginning of this year, let's focus on real issues before we come after f**king Bruno Mars for alleged misogyny. No one saying he’s misogynistic. Thank you. Thus far no one has really even given specific examples of how what I said is factually incorrect. "When I Was Your Man" is somewhat irrelevant to the extent that the song is about what he should have done, but he does refer to the woman as "good strong" so that is something.

Still waiting for a woman’s perspective tho. JTWYA directly addresses the worlds problematic view of womxn’s body images, but after that he basically has built a career on where every album/project he releases at least 1-2 singles that come across as love songs(?) but actually more so specifically express how he wants to get in a relationship or be with a women almost solely because she’s physically beautiful/attractive. Never really thought about it before (and to earlier points, I’d imagine most heterosexual men-identified singers do the same), but you’re right: It would be interesting conversation to hear womxn’s perspective on that truth, particularly as diversity, equity, and inclusion are more mainstream topics. Like, is it “worth conversation” that society has basically applauded his (or any other singers) love songs, when he’s basically just saying “I want you because you’re so pretty.”

"Marry You"???? @antigonerising sis please give your view on this if you want. "Marry You" never describes the woman in any real way, but Mars does at least give her agency in saying "If we wake up and you wanna break up that's cool" (though that implies his claim of wanting to marry her isn't romantic or even serious at all lol). You don’t but other(s) seem to think there should be criticism and commentary/controversy over it. My point was to have a conversation. I think it says a lot that it hasn't even occurred to many people that Mars has rarely if ever described the women in his songs as anything more than physical beings.

"Marry You"???? @antigonerising sis please give your view on this if you want. He literally says “we’re looking for something dumb to do . . . we’re trashed (drunk) . . . [off] patron . . . I think I want to marry you.” LOL. No where in the song does he mention actually liking her in any way lol. I’d offer, it’s quite interesting that he’s made a career off of supposed “love songs,” but doesn’t ever really mention or talk about being in love with the woman at all.

I get it but in the same breath...what is the end result?🤔 If you go back to to my initial reply, I simply asked if there's been conversation about it. I also drew a parallel to country music where "bro country" has been loudly and often criticized for the music consistently being about women as objects and about drinking/partying. It might (or might not) say something that people haven't taken issue with similar lyrics in other forms of music. Regardless, instead of getting into the question I asked, people just balked at the suggestion about his music.

Lol, all those 90s R&B hits should be banned then, people nowadays are so fucking fragile they'll be scared by Silk's Freak Me or Keith Sweat songs, this is what happens when you take too serious being a "social/keyboard justice warrior" or ultra "feminist", Idk anymore.

If I'm offending someone, sorry, I won't stop listening to male pop, r&B, rap, etc..
Side note: this is also why more and more people are thinking "liberals" are clowns and weird people, that's sad because most of us just enjoy life and have fun like most common/normal people.

I mean, honestly. Talk about intentionally lighting a match with carefully chosen words, so when all hell broke loose, he could then basically just say, well, I didn't say it was a bad thing.
It's a big giant eyeroll for me.

I love 90s R&B and I’m definitely a Bruno fan. I also agree that social justice conversations can be a lot, at times. This just made me realize that Bruno doesn’t really make “love songs” per se, or at least, release them as singles. He just trying to get his, like most the rest of the fu*k boy singers. He just does in a less outwardly offensive way, that almost makes it sound good LOL. I ain’t necessarily mad at him for it. Just don’t think I noticed it before.

"Nobody" at least has lyrics where Keith Sweat says he wants to please the woman, to give her what she likes, and tells her to let him know when to stop. "Freak Me" also speaks of doing the things she wants him to do; the song is about him wanting to please her. "Gil U For Me" is similar in that it portrays the woman as an equal. And again, it's about the collective, not just one song. If Bruno Mars has a song where the woman is viewed as a full-fledged human, please pass it along.

I asked questions to have a conversation about a thought that occurred to me when I listened to this new song "Skate."
