I think the issue with this album is mainly it's just expensive/grandiose production to cover an otherwise empty album.

A bunch of large-scale sci-fi sounding production that did not translate to memorable melodies, and the songwriting is ofcourse all things he has beyond done at this point. 

I was confused when I saw some posters here liken the album cover to early 2010s Gaga in an attempt to be edgy, but actually, listening to the album I can kinda best liken my criticism similar to what she was receiving at that point in her career with Born This Way/ARTPOP. Born This Way (especially) and ARTPOP at times have a lot of edgy, expensive, loud, grandiose production thrown over songs that had very weak songwriting and felt like she was milking whatever little creative juices she had left at that point from overworking.

Man I hear all the criticisms in this thread and I can understand them but I just don't agree.  This album sounds fantastic to me and I think it's overflowing with creativity and cool ideas. I think Fantano absolutely nailed what makes the album so good in his review.

Also Less Than Zero is probably gonna end up either a top 10 or top 5 song of the year for me.

Looking at the Spotify numbers, its clear that people love Out Of Time. I get that it was on the top hits playlist, but it almost gained twice as much streams as Sacrifice yesterday and people would’ve just skipped the song if they didn’t like it. This should clearly be the next single when the time is right. Saving Less Than Zero until later in the year is probably for the best as people are hearing similarities to Save Your Tears. Let that song fully die down from radio before giving the public the round 2.

Everyone has said it SOUNDS fantastic and it really does sound great. I've listened to it three times and every time I think that "oh yes that MJ song is brilliant" and "maybe I should revisit some Daft Punk again". It's pretty unclear to me if that's the purpose for album by The Weeknd, because I am not really interested in The Weeknd on this album.

Out of Time (Human Nature) is a sweet track and would work as a single but they need to make the decision quickly, otherwise it'll do like Woman by Doja Cat - great streams overall but not a clear peak.

It’s like that mixed with an MDM type of release. Surprise releases aren’t really his best move tbh. If he pushed Sacrifice as a single and then release the album it would’ve probably performed better but what we did get is still decent. 17 Weeknd tracks with 13 debuting on the charts is still a win, that’s almost 1/5th of just Abel.

Got around to listening to the album in its entirety, and I have to say I’m slightly surprised at the mixed reaction here. I personally think it’s one of his better albums, and I enjoy pretty much all the songs except for the interludes. They’re not my thing, but I get the intention and what they bring to the album “experience.” I’m loving the vibes, production, and aesthetics for the album. Even the remixes and their coinciding videos. I’m a lover for nostalgia though and that’s what the weeknd gives along with modern visuals.

According to rumors on Deuxmoi, The Weeknd will announce his stadium tour in February with Doja Cat joining him (for the US leg i guess).

I expected to like this a lot more based on the comments. Even the negative comments sounded like something I would like. I do like it but I don’t love it. That being said, Less Than Zero is the best song on the album and I listen to it a lot!

Out Of Time is looking like its going to be the next single. Between doing decent on streaming out of all the tracks, getting lowkey playlist placement, and being a fan favorite in general it’s guaranteed that it has the life to be pushed and hopefully do well.

Thinking that he should’ve picked this song from the start instead of Sacrifice. That song felt too similar to all his current radio singles with the 80s sound and it lacks in any versatility and that’s how i think the GP likes consuming his music, with each single being versatile from one another.

Think back to how The Hills and CFMF, or Heartless and BL were basically 2 completely separate sounds and genres from each other so they were able to dominate at the same time in their own separate ways without overshadowing each other on radio and general consumption. That’s how In Your Eyes got extremely unlucky in catching any spotlight compared to if he went with something like Scared To Live or Too Late at the time, which could’ve caught on with different audiences. If another choice got picked from Dawn FM, more specifically the slower and chilled back R&B stuff on the second half of the project, then we probably wouldn’t have saw a close race on the first week, then losing, then slowly decreasing in streams every day since then.

As I do my chart week after week, I come close to bringing Sacrifice into my top 40 but it just won’t make it and I realized this weekend, I don’t really care for it. There are definitely other songs on the album that would have made for more impactful singles.

Personally I found Out Of Time, Best Friends and ITSE to be refreshing and a different vibe to the heavy synths of HDIMYLM, TMB and Sacrifice. Since he'd released TMB already I personally think ITSE should've been pushed. I think we can all agree however that while Sacrifice is pretty good, its not the best on the album and sounds too similar to TMB

I have to say this album has grown on me quite a lot. I really like the whole radio station thing he's done with the album and the production on the songs is excellent. Whilst the highs aren't as high as After Hours, I do find myself liking the album more as a whole.

My top 5 tracks for the album:

"How Do I Make You Love Me?"
"Take My Breath"
"Less Than Zero"

I really hope "Sacrifice" does well in airplay/picks back up in streaming and has good longevity. I also hope they release another 2-3 singles from the album.

I can't remember if I commented on this album shortly after it was released or not, but I quite like it a month or so later. I'm still not sure if I like it more than After Hours and I agree that album had higher highs. There are less lows on this one for me, though. Cut "Starry Eyes" and "Quincy" and it's pretty solid overall. My top 5 are as follows:

1. "I Heard You're Married"
2. "Out of Time"
3. "Sacrifice"
4. "Gasoline" (huge grower)
5. "Is There Someone Else?"
