I'd actually have to go with Good 4 U or, possibly, Stay as the year-defining hit, at least globally. They've been dominating the summer so far, and, bar a surprise release from someone like Kendrick or even Post (If he actually releases a song he cares about and not a soundtrack reject) they should keep on going. Another contender would have to be Montero, but those are the three that come to mind

Am i the only one seeing the stability of Happier Than Ever? #2 on AM and #3 on Spotify to this day and people were so quick to write the whole album off as a flop. Pop radio has begun to pick it up too. I think it could be a legit hit.

its hard to say in another year where not many people were actually together in a community of spaces what was the song that will be remembered as the defining hit of the year. i would say drivers license is more of a retrospect song that people will look back on and be like "the hold that had on the world for months", but when people think 2021 i imagine they would think good 4 u or levitating. stay could be a closer type hit that comes later in the year but is still seen as the image of it.

Waxing on and on about what songs define a year or which will be remembered is obviously something some of y'all love to discuss, repeatedly, given any chance. That's nice, and I get that you're bored. But it doesn't belong in a weekly Hot 100 thread. Start a thread for it and those of you who enjoy it can go on and on in circles for eternity, please.

we were talking about bieber songs that can get a crowd going. it is not his song I agree itβs not his song. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee deserve the credit for that one. Justin just tagged along for the credit, and he couldnβt even sing the Spanish lyrics, lol. but guess who made the song a number one smash hit in usa..Justin!!

While staying the staying on topic is challenging in these threads, it can be argued all of the songs discussed are charting on the Hot 100 currently with the exception of DL. So your posturing is completely unnecessary on this.

Context.....yes we all know Bieber was the reason the song went to #1...I think they were talking about a Bieber song that gets the crowd to sing along.
In this context....Bieber was an afterthought

That's quite true. And one can hardly sing along with Beiber if he can't sing along to it himself.

There's a bunch of Bieber tracks that get the crowd going, mostly his stuff from Purpose like Sorry and Love Yourself (and even some of his earlier stuff like Baby), but in the last 5 years he hasn't really released anything memorable enough for people to actually dance and sing along to. I don't count Despacito, because I don't even hear his version at the clubs or the bars anymore, they pretty much just play the OG version. His verse is like 30 seconds then he's just a background vocalist on the rest of the track.
Peaches is his first song in a long time that can actually get the crowd going, and maybe Stay but I haven't heard it at the club yet.

Cool word, though, fish eggs.

Moving on, is there a chance that "Happier Than Ever" climbs into the top 10 this week? It's been stable so far.

^There are certainly new members who are interested in and capable of providing worthwhile commentary on the charts as much as those of us who have posted more. Definitely, but idk why new members who wouldnβt be a problem in any way would have any reason to worry about a βprobation period.β Anyway, you can generally tell after a few posts whether someone is genuine in wanting to be a contributing member and whether they want to stir up shit.

Itβs so bizarre she has an album out in 2 weeks, completely forgot. Iβm very surprised her label is letting it get released under these conditions. Iβm excited nonetheless. with the way Manic singles were treated on radio, I honestly don't blame Halsey for going this more artistic, album-oriented route. we've yet to hear any of the songs, other than what's been teased in the trailers for the IMAX experience film. (which sound promising to me.) Didnβt the manic singles do decently? The issue was that there wasnβt really a push of anything once the album came out. At least thatβs how I remembered it.

I feel like there's no HUGE hits this year (so far), like Blinding Lights, Despacito, Shape Of You, Uptown Funk or Call Me Maybe. If I have to choose, the closest one is good 4 u.

I'm kind of okay with the fact that no one hit has felt super dominant. It's like a nice little club of big hits. It feels communal.

Yeah every year we get one big hit that everyone points to as that years "big hit," but I like that this year is more chill and we have multiple decently dominant hits instead of one huge hit.

This really reminds me of 2016, where nothing really stood out to me other than Closer towards the end of the year. Maybe weβll get a song that resembles that, maybe from Kanye or Drake, or someone completely unexpected.

We didnβt even get anything close to that so far. If there is anything that is going to be as big as One Dance or Closer, itβs going to have to be Stay holding on to #1 until the end of October.

We've sort of lacked that huge summer smash because of the astroturfing of Butter. Otherwise we might have seen something like Good 4 U and Stay feel bigger.

Maybe we need a probation period for new members (tho rather than making it time-based, make it post-based - probation until you hit 100 posts or something). This. I say make a minimum requirement to post in the chart forums > 500 posts. Oh good, as long as they can post in the "Skate" thread.

And regardless she could easily come back and score more radio hits. She is 26 and debuted barely 5 years ago. It's not like we are talking about a 45 year old who is pushing over two decades since debuting. Going the album route and abandoning radio after just 1 era with a few flukes that stalled doesn't really make sense.

Do we have any sales estimate on Take My Breath? I know digital sales are low but it has to at least hit like 10k

I posted this in the thread talking about decentralization of hit music but I think it bares repeating here:
I don't mind music being decentralized from the mainstream public. Movies and TV has been like this for a while, especially with the advent of streaming services. Outside of Marvel movies, no one really says every big blockbuster is the defining movie of last decade.
It's also why I'm opposed to the idea the decade defining artists of last decade or every decade before that we're simply the most popular ones, as opposed to those who got critical acclaim and are continued to be talked about today. So for some: 2021 will be the year of Olivia Rodrigo and drivers license and good 4 u, for others it'll be the year of Black Country New Road, black midi, Porter Robinson, or PinkPantheress.

I just realized how weird it is The Kid LAROI now has a number-one smash in multiple countries - including topping the Global charts right now - but Lucid Dreams never went to number one in any country

I think it's a matter of timing. I remember discussing in a previous thread that Lucid Dreams had some of the highest points for a song that never made it to #1. It was just an unlucky break for him.

How I feel about Levitating's success and longevity. I've been rooting for the song since Future Nostalgia dropped. I remember even being upset that her label was delaying pushing it as a single. Now, I hope it spends at least 40 weeks in the top 10.
