I'd say that Take My Breath is, in a sense, what people thought After Hours was. That is, a more poppy version of Trilogy and especially Kiss Land. Lyrically, this song is genuinely the darkest thing he's put out since The Hills, and yet it sounds really bright. It's funky and has a great groove. I'd argue that my one issue with the song is that, unlike Blinding Lights, it sounds less than something inspired by that retro sound and more like a recreation of that sound, other than the transition.
But outside of that this is simply a great song. It's much easier to move along to than Blinding Lights, so there's that. I much prefer it to Save Your Tears, In Your Eyes, I Feel it Coming and Can't Feel My Face, if I'm being honest. I did want something darker musically, exactly like that transition, and the lyrics seem to point us to getting at least a few album tracks in that lane, so I'm not worried. This is going to be big, and the hype for the album is there. Hopefully, by mid-September we're going to get a deep cut with that darker, more maximalist sound
Edit: okay no forget what I said it does sound contemporary, and the more I think about it, probably moreso than AH in all honesty

I was prepared for Kanye to inevitably not release today so I’m not surprised anymore.
Anyhow, Take My Breath is really good and should be a hit in the fall but other than that, a quite slow week.

Take My Breath is great!!! Falls a little flat during the chorus for me, but still takes away little from the song. I feel if this doesn't debut at #1, it will be a disappointment, especially because there's no other major competition.

I'm 99% sure the all black cover for Donna is a placeholder but Kanye is also the type of person to do that last minute and I'd be so bummed cause the painting cover is legit his best cover art ever

Between Take My Breath and Skate, i don’t know which one i love more. I literally can’t wait for Bruno and Abel’s new eras to compete with each other like 24k and Starboy did and that was an iconic time.

I see some predictions having Butter below both Stay and good 4 u on the 08/14 chart, if Bieber manages to pull #1 this week Abel may have a chance to debut at #1. I guess we'll have to see the first day Spotify numbers.

It seems the vast majority of armys at this point are trying to let Butter fall gracefully, so if they do try to get it back to #1 if it takes a big hit this week it'll just make its chart run look messier

But obviously nothing like singles released and promoted two years apart charting simultaneously has probably been done. Maybe for a traditional album launch. FUTURE/HNDRXX was a special case. also Folklore/Evermore. Did NTLTC still chart during thank u, next run? or maybe Rihanna did it during Loud/TTT era |
