I'm a third of the way through the list and one of the songs I've gone through is by a group I've never even heard of; that song is my in my Top 5. So far I know more of these songs than I thought, just not by name.

Always fun to discover something that you never knew existed.

I think the version of "Precious Love" on Spotify is a re-recording, unfortunately. if you compare it to this:

Welch's voice on the Spotify version sounds way older and the production is much flatter.

I looked into this further and the version on Spotify is indeed a re-recording. Coming from a Greatest Hits compilation I thought that would've still been the original track but I guess that's not the case this time around. I've updated the opening post with a link to the correct version.

Just submitted. Four of the songs in my top 40 I had never heard before. Pretty interesting year, lot of different musical styles.

Forgot how much the Pointer Sisters could be musical chameleons with some of their earlier music. They did a great version of Springsteen's "Fire", though my favorite version is still Robin Williams as Elmer Fudd





I didn't realize that REO Speedwagon had such a brief moment where they were musically interesting. Their 79 song kinda blew.

"All My Love" was never released as a single, although radio promo 45s were pressed in some markets. "Accidents Will Happen" did reach the top of the Bubbling Under chart, so it was a #101 at least.

There were certainly traces of the 80's to come, but there is definitely a healthy dose of the 70's in this rankdown. 5 of my top 40 songs were songs I had never heard before, so I was pleasantly surprised. My bottom 20 I could have done without. Looking forward to the extras, I'm sure there are going to be some great finds there. It's an interesting rankdown when Loving, Touching, Squeezing doesn't make the Top 100, but Just the Same Way does?!?!? I had never even heard of that song, let alone heard it before.

Nice to see some higher quality Queen and Cheap Trick songs. And Zeppelin too.

Let's start getting up some of the extras for 1979! There are 277 of them for this year. Of the extras that I'm not saving to be revealed during the rankdown itself, I will be posting them alphabetically. Most will be included in a table but a few of the highlights will get their own post. I'm also including here where each song peaked on the Hot 100 for reference.

We ranked a studio version of "Chip Away the Stone" in the 1989 Mainstream Rock rankdown after the song was re-issued on Aerosmith's Gems compilation album. "Song on the Radio" was the follow up single to Al Stewart's top 10 hit "Time Passages". "Heartaches" was the final single for the Canadian rock band BTO to chart on the Hot 100. And this set also includes a song from the short-lived English rock band Bandit off of their second album Partners in Crime.

"Spirits (Having Flown)" was released as a single after being included on the Bee Gees Greatest compilation album. Blue Steel were a southern rock band from Texas. "I Thank You" is a cover of the soul song by Sam & Dave (1967).

"Vengeance" was Grammy nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and features backing vocals from actor Tim Curry. "Ain't That a Shame" is a cover of the rock & roll song by Fats Domino (1955). And "No Tell Lover" was a top 5 hit on the Adult Contemporary chart.

"New York Groove" was written by Russ Ballard and first recorded by the British glam rock band Hello in 1975. Train Train was a staple on my local AOR station throughout the 80s.

So I listened to extras. Couple thoughts:

By accident, I hit One Direction's version of One Way or Another. I'm happy that Debbie Harry made some serious residuals off that, but I'll stick with the original which would have made my Top 25 at least. Dreaming is my favorite of her 79 releases by far, but the start of OWOA really rocks. I'd rank it ahead of Heart of Glass any day.

Cheap Trick's Aint That a Shame is a downright classic live track. Very few bands in the 70s and 80s did live tracks as well as Cheap Trick, IMO.

Frehley's NYC Groove and Seger's We've Got Tonight stand the test of time. Blackfoot's Train Train is a staple.

As far as new songs, there was something fun (sorta similar) about Bob Welch's 3 Hearts that I enjoyed. Camel's Wing and a Prayer was quite pleasant as well.

How about some more extras? This set includes a pair of songs from Climax Blues Band's 11th album Real to Reel. "Down to the Waterline" was the opening track on Dire Straits' self-titled debut. And "Get a Move On" was featured on the soundtrack for the 1979 comedy film Americathon.
